  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 19, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) So, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's followed the case of Maher Arar, the Canadian citizen who was grabbed by U.S. authorities at an airport in 2002, held without charges, and shipped to Syria to be tortured as an ally of terrorists. So, the Canadian government conducted an investigation into whether any charges or holding of him was appropriate, and here are the results. So, based on an unconfirmed report that didn't even come from our own intelligence serivices, the U.S. used a "rendition" to send a man abroad for beatings and torture of all sorts. Clearly, the President needs more of this power, otherwise, there may still be innocent people who aren't tortured. Arar testified before Congress (via video conference, as Homeland Security refuses to allow his passage into the US despite specific requests by Congressmen). Link to his testimony: http://foreignaffairs.house.gov/110/ara101807.pdf 13 pages, and worth every minute it takes to read.
  2. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) It is just as good as anyone's "inside source." I'm sorry you can't read. I said NEWSPAPERS.
  3. QUOTE(G&T @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) What are you going on? "pure speculation" -- much better than newspapers. Almost infallible.
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 01:16 AM) After doing a pretty in depth internet search on Orlando Cabrera I'm having a hard time finding anyone who doesn't like him as a player, especially anyone who watched him in Anaheim. From what I've gathered his stats take a hit because he gives up so many ABs in the 2 hole. He also puts himself in unfavorable counts since he's willing to take pitches for a baserunner. If it's at all possible he seems to be an even better defender than his reputation lets on, he's very smart in the field, 100% focused at all times (the anti-Uribe) and can make all the tough plays. He's well liked in the clubhouse, is good to the media and speaks very good english. I also heard an interview Boers and Bernstein did today with Kevin Baxster, he covers the Angels for the LA times, he like everyone else had absolutely nothing bad to say about Cabrera and described him as an "average to young 33 years old" so he isn't exactly slowing down. I never paid a lot of attention to Orlando Cabrera but after reading the Angels/Red Sox fans' take on him I'm really starting to like this deal even more than before. Cabrera is a real baseball player unlike a lot of the guys we've been forced to watch on the South Side over the years. Well, those things aren't true. He's hit better in the 2nd spot than anywhere else in the lineup, and if he's taking pitches for baserunners then Anaheim must never have any baserunners. If this is meant as sarcasm, my apologies.
  5. That was a fun MNF game to watch, even without any rooting interest. Vince Young looked far better than I've ever seen him look.
  6. QUOTE(PAUL KONERKO 14 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 09:48 PM) I know, I was kidding. I just get lazy and I really am not going to read 30 plus pages of this. To be honest, I doubt anyone will just sit there reading even 10 pages. If you're posting an article that's published the same day, just glance at the posts from that day. In this case, that's only a few pages.
  7. Cowley: Hunter could join the Sox within a week http://www.suntimes.com/sports/658098,hunter111907.article But, as usual, no details agreed to.
  8. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) Now read what you just typed, and then take a look at Mr. Ecksteins offense. Then project he isnt in the minor leagues anymore and he has to face good pitching in the American League. Being Irish, I have a special place in my heart for the wee people, and their magic. But let me assure you, Mr. Ecksteins magic pixie dust can be someone elses problem.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 04:32 PM) Hate to say it, but I think the starting rotation is probably set unless either we gamble on a Garcia/Colon/Clement coming off an injury.. I don't think you do this deal as is unless you think Floyd and Danks are taking those last 2 spots and you're still counting on Jose. Because the next option on the list seems to be Broadway and Gio, and I find it hard to believe we're penciling either of those 2 into the rotation yet. Or Egbert, fwiw. I could see that.
  10. QUOTE(buckweaver @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 03:45 PM) To those asking about the $$, here's what the report says: "Cabrera, 33, earns $9 million in 2008, marking the final year of his current four-year deal. He has 112 career playoff at-bats, including hitting .200 against the White Sox during the 2005 American League Championship Series, and was part of the Red Sox 2004 World Series championship squad. By moving Garland, the White Sox took $12 million off the books for 2008, while also seemingly opening a rotation spot for both John Danks and Gavin Floyd -- assuming general manager Ken Williams does not add another veteran arm to the rotation. " If I recall, Garland is on for $12 M in '08. Presuming that...to take $12M "off the books," wouldn't that mean the Halos are sending about $9M in cash with this deal? Recall, too, that for a good hitting, defensive pro like Cabrara, 33 isn't that old. For Chrissake, Vizquel is still playing...and playing well. This might turn out to be one grerat deal. And for the doofus that was clamoring the Tejada...plan on seeing that 'roid ragers name front and center in the Mitchell report. Why do you think NO ONE is willing to touch him? No. The $12 mil "off the books" is in moving Garland, as an isolated move. It implies NOTHING about the cash involved in the deal.
  11. Jon, I hope the Sox f*** you up every time we see you and singlehandedly send your era into the mid-teens. Besides that, I wish you well. Unless the Angels get Miguel Cabrera. In that case, if the Sox are good, I hope everyone f***s you up real bad, which will likely send your career into a tailspin, although be assured that that is not my goal, I just do not want to see good pitching + Vlad + Cabrera on one team in the playoffs. But since the Sox will probably suck regardless, I will, probably, wish you well. Sincerely, jh
  12. QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 03:14 PM) I saw that Cabrera's deal was 4 years $32 million (8 per year). I take it that it was scaled up in the last year? My bad. Yeah, pretty sure he's getting $9 mil this year.
  13. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 03:10 PM) Well, keep in mind they have to replace Colon in their rotation...although he was injured for most of the season. This leaves the Angels with Lackey, Escobar, Weaver, Garland and Saunders as their rotation. Probably the second best rotation (ON PAPER) in the AL, minus the offensive firepower of the Red Sox. I don't see where they have any pitchers to trade...beyond either E. Santana and/or Saunders. Neither of those guys, or both together, is not going to get you a Miguel Cabrera caliber player. They would have to trade Kendry Morales, Willits and another fringe prospect in the mold of McPherson/Kotchmann (06-07) along with those two pitchers...and that opens up just as many problems as it solves. Maybe if they gave up Aybar/Morales/Willits (two of those three) along with Santana or Sanders...but neither of those pitchers are enough to get anyone excited, they're not true frontline starters, at least at this stage of their careers. Adenhart or Weaver. Plus Wood or Kendrick, plus someone else. If you give up Kendrick, you shift Figgins to 2b, using Cabrera at 3b. In any case, this can't hurt an Angels push for Cabrera.
  14. QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 02:23 PM) Salary dump. I'm guessing they got at least $2 million in the deal, meaning that the Sox saved $6 million in the swap. Whether that goes to other players or just to the raises due to Buehrle and Dye, I don't know. My guess is that it goes to the raises due to Buehrle and Dye. The Uribe re-signing is a real head scratcher at this point. P.S. I like Cabrera for something like .280/.330/.400 with the Sox. Better than Uribe offensively, but no great shakes. I don't like what they will be replacing Garland with in the rotation. Details...but I thought... JG: $12 mil OC: $9 mil - $2 mil = $7 mil = $5 mil saved No? I'm not counting on $2 mil, either.
  15. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 01:33 PM) I could be wrong about Cabrera netting two draft picks. Apparenty a poster at SSS said shortstops are grouped with third-basemen and second-basemen -- is this true? In any case I still think the chances are pretty good that -- barring Cabrera falling off the table next season -- Cabrera will be type-A. They are, but Cabrera's pretty solidly in the A group: Lol at those.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 01:09 PM) Gio isn't exactly a sure-fire pro. At least Cabrera is someone we can put on the field and know he can produce offensively and defensively. For one year, when we just resigned someone whose only asset is his ability to play the same position. And although I think it's likely, I don't "know" we'll get the 2006-2007 Cabrera, rather than the 2004-2005 Cabrera. I'll take another Gio and more money saved.
  17. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) So -- if Kenny and the Sox choose to make it so, the deal will eventually be... Garland = Cash + one year of Cabrera + two draft picks. Is this where I get painted to be the white-and-black sunglasses wearing, 'everythings turning up roses!' optimist? Whatever. I didn't go apes*** last year for the Freddy G deal when most everyone else was, so... One draft pick on net. Garland should be at least a B.
  18. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 01:05 PM) Uribe can play 3B, SS and 2B and hit with power. He is a somewhat ideal, though very expensive utility option. He's horrible as a utility option. He's had an awful bat for years. He's a good defender (used to be great, but has slowed down), but you don't need a late-inning defensive replacement at ss when you trade for a good defensive ss. So we have a defensive replacement 3b and 2b who will an awful ph. For $4.5 mil. Terrible.
  19. QUOTE(RX Bandits @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 12:58 PM) for all that do not like this deal: Name a pitcher the white sox have been wrong about the last 20 years (ala traded away or didnt resign and amounted to something)? Besides Navaro, this team has not been burned. Few people are saying that Jon's going to tear up the AL for the next 10 years. (Although, Kip Wells and Josh Fogg were each better than the garbage we trotted out for our fifth starter for the next couple years, not to mention the garbage we traded them for. Jury's still out on the BMac/Danks challenge trade.) The point is that there's no Gio coming back in this deal.
  20. QUOTE(WCSox @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 12:33 PM) Yeah, I would've liked this deal A LOT more if it were done BEFORE the decision to pick up the option on Uribe's deal. Who in the hell is going to want Juan at $4.5 million? Or does Kenny actually want to pay a utility infielder that much? Agreed. If you're thinking you'll get another first-round pick next year and clear money for some good purpose (Andruw Jones...), well, okay. It's not what I wanted, but okay. But the money you clear in this deal will be used to pay for...the backup to the guy you just traded for. Wtf kind of deal is that? Ugh...
  21. So Buehrle doesn't throw a cutter, huh? Nice tool, still, and something I haven't seen. Thanks.

  23. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 11:03 PM) I can't imagine what it'd be like if someone ended Brady's season. I've read about what happened to McMahon, twice. I don't know if that'll happen to Brady but I don't blame Belichick for taking that risk to make his point. I'm sure Brady's on board and they're all grown men who know what they're doing. I can imagine it. The same guy who claimed that NE hadn't actually taped Jets coaches at all, that NE shouldn't be punished because although it is a rule it is not a rule that he agrees with, would claim that it was a dirty hit, even if it was just the cleanest, hardest, face-up hit in the history of the league. He'd whine... In other words, it'd be f'n awesome.
  24. "Brady is finished for the night." Maybe. I've grown especially sick of NE fans lately. God, how happy I was when NE lost to Houston in the MLS final today. Not that I follow MLS much. But, oh, the joy of seeing Robert Kraft disappointed.
  25. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 10:39 PM) I have trouble expressing just how much I admire New England's shoving it up the league's ass. Actually, I do understand the depth of your feeling. It's almost as strong as my wish that someone fracture Brady's knee into a thousand million little pieces. Almost.
