  1. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 03:16 PM) Pavano, finally entering the final year of his four-year, $39.95 million contract... They grow up so fast.
  2. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 05:40 PM) As for the Bears, well your season is on the line in this 2nd half, and unfortunately it's probably going to come down to if Grossman can make some plays or not, against a pretty good Raiders D over.
  3. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) Better fact list in support of not eating meat Alpha Dog eats meat Soxy doesn't Who would you rather have dinner with? QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 04:48 PM) I cook an awesome steak, homemade marinade. Even cheap cuts are tender and juicy. As long as it is not mooing, it is done enough. Oh, and Squirt, we have canine teeth for a reason, tearing meat. Hmm... What's Soxy cooking? How big are those steaks, Alpha?
  4. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) Sqwert, there is physical evidence that early humans hunted animals and ate them. Exactly. And chimps are very close relatives, and they eat meat. Trying to show that humans are animals 'not built to eat meat' involves an abuse of science and history, skewed to meet ideological ends, as bad as that of global warming deniers.
  5. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 03:37 PM) He was standing on the sidelines, but wasnt moving much. Peterson took a helmet to his knee, and considering his history of injury problems.... it didnt look good. When has he had a knee injury before? Hip and collarbone are the only ones I remember.
  6. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 02:31 PM) LINK Oh, well, it's celestialhealing.net, that certainly sounds like a reputable source...
  7. At first I thought this was just absurd. The Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, probably the Angels can easily beat any offer of ours. But it doesn't sound as if they want to. I can't believe this is beginning to sound almost possible.
  8. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 12:53 PM) But did a team of high-schoolers beat the pros? That's kinda the little argument going on here. The argument isn't "can you compete against a WNBA team?" He's basically saying that he is absolutely positive that him and his group of friends would beat a WNBA team, and it's very easy to doubt that. When I was at FSU, about 4 girls from the girls' team lived in my dorm, so I got to know them pretty well. One of them was dating a football player, and I heard about a time when her and a couple of teammates played a pick-up game against three football players. The football players did win. That's why I'm glad someone asked what sports and at what levels this kid and his friends have played, because those FSU guys were freakish athletes, a couple of whom did also play basketball in high school, and capable of beating very good female basketball players. Yes, it's possible that a group of kids who played a little bit of high school sports, none of which was basketball, and didn't go much further can beat a top WNBA team in basketball, but I don't think it's probable. Sounds more like bravado to me. LMB is talking about the original question in the thread, not the WNBA argument.
  9. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) The farther along the season goes the more and more I think the Browns are gonna match whatever offer they get for Anderson and pass on the first and third rounders. Eh...if you really want someone, you can always get creative with a poison pill. I'm not saying the Bears would use that tactic, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone did.
  10. I don't like the idea of giving up a first-round pick for Anderson, but we'd only have to give up one first, plus a third. He's only a restricted fa, and they'll put the top tender on him (1st + 3rd compensation).
  11. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 08:21 PM) The problem with the Bears is that they haven't had an impact 1st rounder in awhile. Sure, they get 2nd, 3rd, 4th rounders to be capable starters, but no real Pro Bowlers (Briggs and Brown maybe). I'll be fair and go back only 10 years: 1997 - No #1 pick 1998 - Curtis (P)Enis 1999 - Cade McC(l)own 2000 - Brian Urlacher 2001 - David Terrell 2002 - Marc Columbo 2003 - Michael Haynes, Rex Grossman 2004 - Tommie Harris 2005 - Cedric Benson 2006 - No #1 pick 2007 - Greg Olsen The guys in bold are Pro Bowlers Two in ten years of drafting #1 picks is pretty sad. "Briggs and Brown maybe"? Maybe??? It's obviously unfair to include Olsen in that already. He's playing very well, anyway. And the problem's not in not getting Pro Bowl players. Decent starters are okay in the first round. Humongous busts aren't. Most of those guys who weren't Pro Bowlers couldn't even stick around the league. Columbo's the exception, but that was just rotten injury luck for us.
  12. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) IMO, they should have drafted a guard is this past year's draft with their #1. Grubbs was the only guy worth such a high pick, and Baltimore beat us to him. Olsen's looking pretty good. Nothing wrong with that pick.
  13. It's just that the basic outline of a deal looks like impossibly bad for Florida. Rotoworld is throwing out Wood, Santana, and Mathis. They admit that it would be a great deal for LA, but how does that not get laughed out of the room? If the price really falls that far, I think the Marlins just kill the talks. But if they still want to trade him, you have to start wondering if it's possible. Meh...I think eventually the Yanks, Sawx, or Dodgers blink and offer a good package. But we'll see...
  14. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 01:40 AM) The Sox are stuck on using LF for players that can't hit. No other organization in baseball is this dumb. As long as they slide hard into 2b on meaningless plays that aren't even close...they're okay in my book...
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 01:16 AM) If it's not Hunter, then it's Rowand...or Cameron...or Andruw Jones....or trading for Juan Pierre. Might as well hope that whoever we overpay for, they perform well. Cameron & Jones don't cost a draft pick. We need all we can get.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 01:11 AM) Oh trust me, there's a lot of reason to fear going on rotoworld to see what moves were made by the Sox on a particular day. I still am of the belief that the Sox should go into total rebuilding mode, but it will never happen with our GM/Manager. I'm also about 90 pct sure that the Sox will sign Hunter by this time next week. I'm betting on Texas. And praying.
  17. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 8, 2007 -> 12:56 AM) Good lord. So Crede at 3rd, Owens in LF, and Josh in AAA. Hopefully this is bravado, because if this is a thought then I am going to be sick. What a shock that Boras wants to go to FA. Its what he does. Joe versus Josh That's the 2nd time he's mentioned that JC is one of the top 3b in the game, right? I have to think it's just a bad bluff. If Fields starts in the minors...okay, then I'll flip.
  18. QUOTE(WCSox @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 04:48 PM) I wouldn't be so sure of that. Cabrera's going to command somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million by then. There is some precedent of the powers that be opening the coffers (Belle), but what's to stop the Yankees or Red Sox from out-bidding JR & Co.? Both of those teams are going to be looking at replacing their aging sluggers by then as well. Much more than that. Manny got $160 mil, and that was a long time ago, and he was 2 years older. If by some miracle the Sox get Cabrera (they won't), you push hard to get him extended now. Not that he'd do it, but you try.
  19. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 05:13 PM) Yeah I realise he's no longer with us, but I was trying to find a similar prospect to the Detroit OF who was traded, and he best fit the bill, unfortunately he's no longer with us, because I think he has a good chance of becoming a starting major league outfielder. Actually that's a good question though. Would you have rather kept Cunningham, and no longer have Richar, and use Cunningham with Gio to get Renteria if you could? Generally, I don't like the idea of trading our top prospects for players who might help us for a couple years during which we're bound to suck, anyway. I mean, for someone like Cabrera you could go that route. But not Renteria. (Not to imply that we have any chance of landing Cabrera. Cuz...we don't.)
  20. I was just looking at this thread, earlier today. I mean, thank GOD we didn't take Frank Gore...
  21. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 04:55 PM) I think it would have been basically a Gio + Aaron Cunningham type of deal to nab Renteria, but Fathom hit the nail on the head. Here's where not having a good farm system really hurts you. Trading Cunningham would also require the use of the wayback machine.
  22. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 01:02 PM) I'd call 2007 an out lier. A 5 point trend down from 2004 to 2006, and then a drop of 17 while he battled wrist injuries? That's having an injury that affects your ability to hit for power, not a trend downwards. How about his average and on-base? AVG .311-.304-.330-.296 OBP .360-.349-.379-.357 I see no trends, other than an injury to the wrists causing problems with power. I agree with you, I don't think it's a trend at all. But, to be fair, the wrist had nothing to do with it. He came back from the injury to put up his best numbers in August. He's just very inconsistent. 2004 was a fluke good year, 2007 was a fluke bad year, 2005 & 2006 were about the same, and about what I'd expect to see. Maybe a little less, given the age.
  23. From the NY Daily News -- The Marlins made clear that one of Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy must be part of a Cabrera deal. Apparently, the Yanks refuse to include any of them. Link: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball..._trade_b-3.html What??? Of course you have to include one of those 3. I'm surprised the Marlins aren't asking for two of them. A top 5 hitter in the game, who should only get better with the bat, under your control for 2 years, and you really think Humberto Sanchez will cut it? I'm having a tough time figuring out when the Yanks are being serious this offseason.
  24. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 04:01 PM) I don't think I could stand the "grinder" articles about Eckstein if he signs O come on, man...just think about it...we could sign Eckstein and resign Erstad on the same day...have a joint press conference, Ozzie in the middle, his arms around them both, looking like the proudest father in the world...in the middle, Kenny's phone rings..."Hey everybody, Aaron was watching the press conference, and he just called to say he'll play here for the minimum if he has to!"...everyone'll have a good, tough cry of joy...then they'll all go out to the field together to practice bunting...and we'll erase the memories of 2007 with our rejuvenated, 75-win team...it's gonna be great...
  25. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 12:06 PM) The only thing I'm going to say in response to this is Jason Jennings. Which conveniently leaves out Tim Purpura.
