  1. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 27, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) I didnt miss his ERA and WHIP though. If he can get around LH hitters and walk less guys, he could be a nice piece of the rotation. 4.30 era with a 1.31 whip in his rookie season? Not too shabby.
  2. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 03:26 PM) Bleh -- is it serious? My WR spot is extremely, EXTREMELY thin. One prolonged injury to a starter and I'm f***ed. Dunno -- just noticed it on rotoworld. He didn't return, though.
  3. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:29 PM) Someone cover Kevin Curtis. Also, Brian Moorman averaging 3 punts for 62.7 yards. Neat. Please don't. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 02:49 PM) W00t! I don't think I'll have to use any other players this week. And the good thing is the Lions should be passing for much of the 2nd half and I have Calvin Johnson who already has ~60 receiving yards. I also have Brady whose thrown for two TDs. Back injury for CJ.
  4. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Sep 23, 2007 -> 12:19 PM) Kitna or Elim Manning? Both o lines suck, but manning going against washington d, harder than Kitna against eagles d. Depends on the scoring, but I'd probably go with Kitna, mostly b/c I'm paranoid about Plax's health. It sounds like he'll play, but who knows? The Iggles are missing Dawkins and Sheppard, too, which could be big for Kitna.
  5. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 09:24 PM) Sorry, just because one asshole leans into too many pitches doesn't mean I want a whole stat other than "hbp" itself telling me about it. Take out the HBP and it's a more accurate telling of a batter's worth. It's not just him. Batters who get plunked a lot one year tend to get plunked a lot the next, and those who seldom get hit tend to avoid the ball the next year, too. Thome's had about 5 hbp almost every year. Delgado's consistently been about 10 hbp higher. It's not dumb luck, at all, so it should be considered. Anyway, hammerhead has so little. Why would you take this away from him?
  6. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) I like the stat, but think HBP shouldn't be included, as batters shouldn't have any control over that... it's blind luck. Craig Biggio begs to differ.
  7. QUOTE(scenario @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 04:46 PM) Not true. There are several very good analytical studies that show the benefit of steals normally exceeds the potential cost. Links? Cuz that's basically the opposite of everything I've seen. I think the problem is in trying to too finely mesh 2 concepts. Obp is roughly seen as 'non-out-making' ability. Slg is roughly seen as 'power' -- are you giving those guys on the bases time to get around and score? Ops is a very rough measure of 'overall offense', but noone pretends that it's too meaningful, it has no natural interpretation, and, iirc, attempts to 'optimally' combine obp and slg tend to weight obp higher. Ops is just a first pass, it's not meant to be very sophisticated. The first thing to be clear about is what you want to measure. You seem to want to define some measure of 'base-getting'. I'm sure it can be done, but it wouldn't replace obp or slg or ops. And you'd need to convince people that it's important. My intuition is that that would be tough to do -- precisely because most studies that I've seen emphasize that being on base improves runs scored (on average) by quite a bit, while advancing a base helps only marginally.
  8. Ramping the obscurity level down by about 25%... I finally heard Sufjan Stevens (Illinoise), and I loved it. It's like Nick Drake on his meds, having fun just one f***ing time. Just great. Otoh, Arcade Fire -- I don't get all the fuss...
  9. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 11:09 PM) Did anybody else hear Kasper and Brenly b****ing about how the Brewers were gonna miss Oswalt and Williams (and his 5.04 ERA)? And now Pujols... Cards website reporting that he may be done for the year.
  10. (to knightni -- oh, very good...)
  11. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 07:50 PM) Has Bradley even set foot on the field? I know I haven't seen him. Honestly, I haven't noticed him either. Game 1 he was still recovering -- he said himself that he played 4 snaps. This past week, he was supposed to be healthy, he was certainly active, but...?
  12. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) Grossman's main strength over Orton and Griese is his ability to go down the field with the ball. They haven't really done that at all yet, and if they don't plan on doing it, Orton is the better choice IMO. It bothers me that the Bears aren't taking shots. Berrian's running all these medium routes, Bradley hasn't caught a pass yet, nor has Hester, and one of his few targets is a dump-off. On some of Rex's passes for receivers coming back, he throws it WAY in front. The Bears as a whole just seem to be playing scared, frightened about the pick. You don't collect speed at the wr position and run comebacks all the time. Let the ball fly once in a while, goddammit.
  13. Mark Ecko bought it. Wouldn't be my first guess, but okay...
  14. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 11:26 AM) Well I certainly agree on the trust thing, and that is a very good point - I wouldn't trust him, if for example I had to work with him. Unless that is I already knew the guy, and his yelling and screaming episode was a one-time deal, which is my whole point with questioning it. Like I said, I could see firing him even if its a one-off maybe, and I would definitely want to see him fired if it was more than that. I'm not going to go hitching my horse to this guy or anything. He's almost assuredly the guy who does this regularly, so he should be out of a job. I meant more in the way of testifying before a jury or a judge, as police officers sometimes have to do -- these are people who certainly won't know him (well -- a judge might, but he technically should separate his personal knowledge of his character from the evidence). Although, imo, that's about reason #5 or 6 why he should be fired.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 11:37 AM) He's probably the type of guy who does this regularly. Therefore, I wouldn't shed a tear if he was fired. But, if there are no previous allegations or evidence of wrongdoing, and since he didn't arrest the kid of harm him in any physical way, I would probably give him one shot to show it was a one-time thing. If he has problems previously documented that are anything like this though, then I heartily agree. Fire him. No, no second chances on this. Besides the powertrip intimidation bs, he's saying, explicitly, that he'll just make up charges. He says that the camera doesn't matter because they'll rip the car up anyway -- obviously threatening to destroy evidence. A cop who subverts the law can not stay a cop just because he didn't beat someone up. Besides the obvious principle of it, he's destroyed his own effectiveness as an officer. Would you trust his testimony after seeing this video? He has to go.
  16. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 11:23 AM) I'm going to try to be careful in this thread. --He may be fired, he's being investigated, and he is suspended without pay. Not sure I'd call it a firing offense, but maybe. Close to it anyway. But let's see what happens. --Police work, unfortunately, draws some people to it who like the power way too much. So, you get the occasional asshole like this. He is, fortunately, in the small minority. --Most cops go through a selection process that is much more rigid than almost any other job there is, including the military (this I've been told by cops who are former military, which is a common career path). There are differences between departments of course. But many times, cops that start well, don't end well. That is where I think some of the biggest failures are - they have stringent guidelines for selection, but then most departments tend to be a lot less mindful of ongoing behavior, and provide a lot less training after the first 2 years. --Here is my question in reading this and seeing the tape - are we seeing the whole thing? Just curious. I haven't seen the part of the tape where the encounter actually started. Has anyone seen it? Have we heard how the conversation actually began? I hope this cop gets penalized severely. Since he didn't do anything to the kid physically, I'd stop short of saying he should be fired. Give him an extended suspension without pay, put him back on the street with a partner for a while and not alone, and put him on probation for a year or two. Make sure his squad has a camera operating with audio. Get him some therapy. If he screws up again, fire his ass. Please. He's being abusive, threatening to make up charges just cuz he feels like it. Fire his ass IMMEDIATELY.
  17. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 02:39 PM) I dunno, he's getting hot... I hate him and think he's a horrible player, but I wouldn't put it past this club to pick up that option. Even if you want him (or can't find anyone better), you still buy him out, then try to resign him at a lower price. He's not worth $5 mil, and he won't get that anywhere else.
  18. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 11:54 PM) Well, no, and neither do you and neither does anyone here. I just said, "I don't think I'd have hired KW" and everybody's on my ass about it? Give me a f***ing break. You wouldn't have hired Ozzie, right? Not a fan, it seems, from your comments. So give me a list of who you would've hired. Did they have to have prior management? Oh, you don't know what you're talking about, shut up, that's weak. I mean, man, I didn't know people aren't allowed to express an opinion. If I have EVER said I wouldn't have hired Ozzie, give me a link, else stfu and stop putting words in my mouth. I LIKED the Ozzie hire quite a bit at first. My initial opinion was that Gaston was sort of dull, a manager doesn't matter much, anyway, and it'll be better to have a bit of a spark. Not a big advantage, but okay, better. Not that I'm saying I would have hired him. I admit that I have no f***ing clue. You can express an opinion, sure, but you stated a fact. Not, I wish this wouldn't have been done, but, I would not have done this. Since you don't know ANYTHING about the people involved -- how do you know people weren't praising Williams or didn't know him? -- it comes off as, It was so obvious that Williams was the wrong choice that even I know that he shouldn't have got the job, and I don't even know the other names who would have been considered. It strikes me as a pretty smarmy remark, so I just asked you to back it up. I don't think that's such a big demand.
  19. The Schuerholz thing is just going along with the running joke. Don't take it so seriously. But the rest -- please, you don't know any of these people, don't know anything they've done, don't know anything being said about any of them. It's just weak.
  20. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 11:32 PM) Ideally he'd be a former GM, yes. And no, I wouldn't ask Schuerholz to take the job as I'm sure he wouldn't. I didn't ask about your "ideal" candidate. I know you take pride in irrationally loving Ozzie and irrationally hating Williams, but the cuteness does eventually fade. Like when you say, I know absolutely nothing about nothing in terms of personnel men, but I would have done better! I dunno -- maybe I'm supposed to laugh at that, but I don't.
  21. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 11:24 PM) I might not have hired Ozzie. I'm sure I'd have called him in for an interview and I'm sure I'd have liked him but would I have hired him? Maybe, maybe not. Depends how much he impressed me and depends on what answers he gave to the Qs that I'd ask him about in-game situations and strategies and the history of the game and all the things I'd ask and I imagine most people ask of prospective managers. I do know that there's no chance in hell I'd have hired Kenny in the first place. While I don't have a list of who was available and what under-studies there were where in GM offices everywhere, I'm sure I'd have found someone much better than KW.
  22. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 11:16 PM) I don't have a list of guys who were available when he was promoted to GM but I'm sure there are a ton of good guys from other organizations with good track records who were available. I'd probably look for someone from outside the organization and with some good, concrete experience. What is your criticism of KW's qualifications? Would you only consider someone who's been a gm before? Or only someone outside the organization? Or are you just saying you'd offer Schuerholz 3/4 of your net worth for one year's work?
  23. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 10:34 PM) Yeah, that's fine but you aren't the owner. I'd have fired him already. I probably wouldn't have ever hired him, though. Why?
  24. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 08:49 AM) Sweeney =/ Young Not sure I'd write him up or give up on him, but I expect him to be traded. First of all, what's with this "=/" you're sporting everywhere? "Not equal to" is written "!=" or "~=". Just saying. Second, I'm not saying he's Young's equal. But they are roughly the same age and had similar age 21 years in the same league. I'd rather take a chance on the potential than swap him for the next Mackowiak.
  25. It's way too early to write off Sweeney at 22. It was a down year and all, but Delmon Young wasn't meeting anyone's expectations, either. I'd rather wait and see.
