QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) I just read a 2001 scouting report on Floyd when he still was in high school. One scout liked him better than Prior. He said Floyd threw 95 and had a devastating curveball. He said Floyd could pitch in the major leagues "right now"(2001). Must have been a White Sox scout. DA, I don't even know what you're trying to prove. That Floyd sucks? Okay, I agree. But we're out of options on him shortly. That's the ONLY reason I want him pitching often over the remainder of the season. But that's enough -- we simply don't have enough major league caliber pitchers for a major league roster. Whatever you throw out there, you're hoping for a miracle. What are the alternatives? Haeger hasn't pitched well this year and it's clear the Sox don't want him in the ML rotation. The realistic alternatives are Masset, Gio, and Egbert. Masset's sucked about as badly as Floyd, and I'd rather not start the arbitration clock on the other two. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of AA promotions in general. If you're just arguing for Haeger to get a shot, hey, I'd support that too. But knucklers are in the Brian Anderson area of the Sox roster -- why waste your breath?

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 12:16 AM) Couldn't find anyone who'd take Travis and I got tired of him. Picked up Braun to be my Utility man. My lineup is: McCann Salty Roberts Upton Guillen Rollins Ichiro Crawford Carlos Lee Braun I'm happy with my lineup. Your league sucks. Is this a Yahoo league? Doesn't Hafner qual at 1b?

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 12:22 PM) Pena has shown up -- from 2004-2006, he put up an OPS+ of about 115 in ~900 at-bats -- he's just never been given a starting job and left alone. And I don't think Delcarmen is as good as he's been this season, but I figure he's a decent second righty option out of the 'pen. Is that better than two draft picks? Tough call, I guess... Blech. He never has shown any ability to get on base, ever. You look at his numbers and say, If only he walked as often as Rob Deer... He's not going to suddenly turn into a patient hitter next year, no matter how young he's been. In that 2004-2006 period, a lot depends on that 2004, when he annihilated some lhp. That's nice, but it doesn't mean he needs only regular abs to become a star, or just an everyday player. He was never very impressive in the minors. And following the usual rule of looking at the last 3 years as the basis of a projection, 2008 doesn't look very promising. As for Delcarmen, I'm just of the school that bullpen guys are too variable, year to year, to make those players centerpieces. If you know you're getting Scot Shields, fine, but that's not something anyone can predict.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) The Sox can still take their time with Contreras. They can pass Contreras easily through waivers, so getting a Conde deal done by 3:00 today isn't a huge deal. The Dye deal, OTOH -- I'm really hoping for Delcarmen and WMP at this point. I think the Sox would do very well to grab an OFer who has a crapload of potential -- the nice thing about the White Sox' situation is that they could guarantee WMP everyday at-bats, something he's never consistently had -- as well as a nice second or third righty out of the bullpen. Is this assuming the Sox won't offer Dye arbitration? Because I can't make sense of Pena + Delcarmen o/w. A middle reliever and a player who's never shown up at any level, who couldn't start on a bad Cincy team, and who's under the team's control for only one year? No thanks. I'll take a couple Aaron Poreda, high risk, high reward types over that offer.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 12:56 PM) It would be ridiculous to keep sending him out there if he continued to pitch like he has in his 2 starts. If they want to give him a couple more starts, fine, but if there's no improvement, blowing out your bullpen and basically forfeiting games is not the answer. I don't know what good getting his brains beat in will do him anyway. In 26 games, 21 starts the OPS against him is .940. Frank Thomas has had an OPS that high in only 3 of the past 10 years. Paul Konerko has never had an OPS that high. This year its over 1.200. Is Contreras "the answer"? We get it, you're sure he's terrible. I don't have much hope for him, I never have. But consider that he's sucked, not just in the majors, but even in the minors for the last few years. He SEEMS to have worked that out over the last couple months. Maybe (maybe!!!) that means that he's worked through his problems and is ready to go. It could also mean he's just a AAAA pitcher, or it could have been a fluke (the most likely possibility imvho). I think the first possibility is very unlikely, but I'm not willing to rule it out. And what's the harm? A couple extra losses in a blown season? Extending some bullpen arms who'll be released, anyway? Let's really see what we have and go from there.
-
The season's shot. Given that he's out of options next year, let's give him the ball and see what happens. I don't even care what happens with Contreras or the other starters. Go to 6-man rotation, dl Contreras, whatever. Give him his starts and let's see if those AAA improvements meant anything so we know what needs to be done going forward.

Braves made offer to White Sox

QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 03:19 PM) So the Marlins strategy would be labeled as re-tooling in your eyes? I guess we just disagree on what it means to re-tool vice rebuild. To me re-tooling means fielding as much of a veteran presence as possible so that you're ready to win. For instance, Uribe is a weakness that is costing us games so we need to replace, or re-tool, at that position. To do so, we take money away from the starting pitching corp and push it towards the SS position. As is evident by ATL, OAK, and MIN, a strong minor league system is imperative to have any success with this strategy...unless you're NY or BOS when money is no object. To rebuild would be to trade all your veteran pieces for cheap, ML-ready prospects...ie. Salty, Milledge, Kemp, etc. You expect to lose for the next couple of seasons as those players develop at the ML level and then become a true competitor as that maturation process begins to yield to success. If you truly believe that we can compete next season, then replacing Uribe with Renteria is not a bad move. While losing a starting pitcher? Renteria's having a career year, he's not this good. I'd rather have Garland next year. Still, I don't think it's a ridiculous offer in terms of value. But the best summary of this is still that it would be just a "lateral move" -- filling one hole while opening another. It doesn't even help next year's team. As for "rebuild" vs "retool", I think you're getting into mere semantics. It's obvious we have to do more than change out a couple positions. But we have a large enough payroll that we hopefully won't have to endure a full, Marlinsesque "rebuild". I think the real underlying hope is that we're respectable next year (though probably not competitive), with our eyes on 2009 or 2010. Somewhere in between the two extremes, call it what you will. -

QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 22, 2007 -> 06:26 PM) I got flamed pretty good in the off season when I started comparing the Sox to the Marlins. I wish I knew how to find wtf I actually wrote but every time I try the search engine is off... QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 08:41 AM) Use google. "soxtalk" and CaliSoxFanViaSWside should bring you up quite a few hits. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=1342753 Some disagreement, but I wouldn't say you were "flamed". -
With KC up and the Sox down, I was wondering, When was the last time this team was in last place in the division (excluding, say, the first couple weeks of the season)? Anyone know, just off the top of your head? Yeah, I'm lazy, I don't feel like doing the research. Who wants to work any harder than the team he follows?

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Jul 18, 2007 -> 11:56 AM) not sure if its still around but i had made a post about 16 relievers in just the AL that are from teams with no chance of competiting. (TB, Balt, TX, KC, etc) The point is, that when he had a chance and the team had a chance, KW chose to do nothing. Now, when the team is past the point of no return, any move that KW makes to better the team is too late. He didn't give the team a chance to win in 2007. You just may want to glance at how those pens have done this year. TB's and Baltimore's have been awful. I don't think Texas would have written off the season that early. And who from the Royals? Riske? Bullpen arms are always unpredictable. Trading off 3 decent minor league starters (thinking of the price for McDougal) on the off-chance that everyone you get'll pan out, when your minors are lacking already and your offense is one of the worst in baseball -- now THAT would have made me call for Williams's head. I don't know how anyone can look at these Sox with 20-20 hindsight and say they had a chance. This is just an awful team, and neither a couple bullpen arms nor an act of God could get them into the WS this year.
-
First off, is it that hard to write a more informative thread title? But as to the substance, what was your proposal? What should KW have done mid-season? To get premier relievers would have depleted the minors, if we could have gotten them at all, and we would've been left with a slightly improved bullpen and still no offense. And no future. No thanks.

Dye was awful. Otoh, Bedard is pretty amazing. I mean, I'm not gonna just 'tip my cap' to, say, JP Howell -- but Bedard is a great pitcher. Dye had a cookie, he obviously should have swung. But it was a wonderful paint job on Fields. Still, what an awful lineup. God, Terrero looked hopeless. When the Sox say they're hoping for a 2nd half push, who do they think they're fooling? If I saw it on this board, I'd chalk it up as sarcasm immediately.

What a steal. There are some real sweetheart deals being signed lately.

QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 10:32 PM) One thing that people forget is that EVERY religion has its own claims to exclusivity. There is always a point where one religion says, we are right and you are wrong. Otherwise, they would not be saying anything at all about who we are, where we are going, or how to get there. Exactly. If you're not any different than another religion, or the differences aren't important, why bother? This is only an issue because it's much different than JPII's presentation, not his doctrine. I don't understand why anyone would be surprised, though.

QUOTE(Soxy @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) Well, that's pretty much what it means. I think the two parties in this country are so strong they can smear people really effectively. Essentially, the voters have a VERY small choice in who goes into office--the parties hold a much stronger sway. Look at the presidential candidates. Not necessarily what the large voting bloc wants to choose from, but those are our options. Bull. Voters have a much larger role today than 100 years ago, when conventions were actually meaningful, speeches were read in the newspaper, and television was unknown. FDR would NEVER be elected today -- precisely because the voters would know what he looked like and they would know he uses a wheelchair.

QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 09:15 PM) What a crazy game when you have to praise a guy for "settling" for $14 MILLION dollars for 7 months of work. I don't see anything crazy about it when someone can get more elsewhere -- a LOT more. I don't doubt Mark could have been guaranteed $2 mil more per year, with one more guaranteed year. In terms of career OPS+, Mark is neck-and-neck with Zito, even with the disastrous 2006. It was one hell of a concession, imo. For that matter, I think $5 million/year is an ungodly amount of money. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be grateful if ARod settled for a 4 year, $20 million contract (hint, hint ).

QUOTE(LDF @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 07:15 PM) rogers is reminding me of the report smith who propose all those bulls and basketball trades..... seriously speaking, why would the sCrubs make that trade with us. Aww.... Sam Smith is pretty good. He overreaches sometimes, but on the whole, he's pretty reasonable. And at least he eventually admits when he's overreaching. Rip on Rogers, rip on Gonzales (please), but ripping on Smith is low...
-
I won't claim to be one of Mark's biggest backers here. Still, I'm very happy to see him stick around. I understand why the Sox were hesitant about a full NTC, and I don't blame them. But even with that, I don't think anyone can deny that Mark gave up a lot of money to stay in Chicago and, overall, made the largest sacrifice to get this deal done. For that, for the championship year, and hopefully for a future championship year , THANK YOU. I won't promise that I'll never call for the Sox to trade you, or never regret the signing, no matter the result. Of course the results matter most. I'm a Sox fan foremost. I can only say that I am grateful, and I won't question your motivations in the years to come. Best of luck, to you and the Sox (hopefully at the same time).

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) I doubt he'll be willing to sign a deal in the White Sox price Range. I can't see him taking a discount similar to the one Buehrle took and I can't see the Sox agreeing to a 5 year $70M+ deal like he'll be looking for. Otoh, his last extension was much lower than anyone thought it could be. I doubt it too, but it's possible. -
Our bullpen's gotta a LOT of work ahead.
