QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 10:58 AM) What's the big deal about a positive test? Its been known for years "the cream" was a steroid. Bonds has never said he didn't use the cream. The issue is whether Bonds knew what it was or not. He claims he didn't know. Maybe his trainer sings, but if they put him on the stand, Bonds' attorneys will shread him. It would seem Bonds wasn't all that truthful with the grand jury, but I really don't know how it will be proven unless they suddenly came up with some new evidence. I don't like Bonds, but its pretty plain to see the feds are out to get him. Couldn't the resources being used for all this be better spent? He claims he took nothing from Anderson before the 2002/2003 offseason. The test was dated November, 2000. So the 'Anderson duped me' defense is a nonstarter. And again, Bonds is at least the second athlete charged with perjury in this investigation.

QUOTE(WCSox @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 07:54 PM) Only a retard wouldn't know that he's on steroids and/or HGH. (Wow, flaxseed oil has added a full inch to my head!) And I don't believe that Barry is mentally-challenged. +1 Something seems to be missing in this discussion. Much of the indictment seems to be based on the timing. Bonds claims that he used nothing from Anderson prior to the 2002/2003 offseason. He wasn't saying merely, I didn't know what it was. He's saying, I didn't use ANYTHING he gave me before just now. I'm also not convinced that Bonds is the only one being targeted. The Feds charged Tammy Thomas, a former Olympic cyclist, on similar charges. Hardly a household name.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) I'm not totally sure. But there's, well...sanity. And then there's Barry Zito's contract. $180 mil seems very low to me. Unless it's a 6-year deal, and I don't think he'd be going that short.
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) But the Yankees never offered him the equivalent of 10 years, $300 million. Even if he just goes 10/$280, and says "oh you have your $21 million back now", then the Yankees still have massively increased their total offer, and are probably, just like the Rangers, over $100 million above what any other team in baseball might have offered. What makes you think nobody else would have offered more than $180 mil total?

QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 07:14 PM) Then why dont the Marlins just wait that half year or so to trade him to a desperate team? As much as I would like him to come to the Sox, he ain't. Its a fantasy, the Dodgers or Angels just need to give up a small fraction of their loaded farm system for him while we would have to give up basically our whole system. I would put it at 95% that the Sox wont get him. I never said it was likely. (I think 5% might even be optimistic.) I'm just saying it's worth the risk, if by some miracle we can acquire him. It's a much better situation than one year and he walks.

Cabrera's under control for 2 years, not one. I wouldn't completely rule out a deal. Staying with Ozzie does indicate some comfort level. Now, the Sox may not be willing to give him a 10-year deal, I can agree with that. But I doubt Cabrera would even be looking for such a deal. That would make his next deal come around in his mid-/late-30s, when his best years are well behind him. It would make more sense to angle for the monster contract when he's 29 or so -- right after his peak years. That's why I think it's plausible that the Sox could buy out a year or two of his free agency, at least. Worst comes to worst, he's determined to try free agency at the first possible opportunity, you still get two almost-peak years from a top-5 player in the game and two picks at the end. You can always swap him this season at the deadline, and you should net a better haul than Texas did in the Teixeira deal. If the worst possible long-term scenario is that you swap your prospects for a group of prospects like that, it looks like a pretty good risk, imo.

Supposedly, the Yankees are talking to ARod...but without Boras...does this smell like bs to anyone else?... http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...__on_their.html
-
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 09:52 PM) Boras only really seems to use that option on guys like Weaver though, who there seems to be really no market for at all. Millwood being the potential exception. I think the J.D. Drew style opt-out after 2 years deal might be where Boras tries to go with this one. Otoh, age is a big deal. Drew opted out after his age 30 year, ARod after his age 31 year (and, well, he's Alex Rodriguez), Millwood took the one-year deal for his age 30 year. Andruw is going into his age 31 year. How much difference does that one year make to teams? (Honest question -- it seems the clock ticks faster and faster after 30, so it could make a real difference. But I'm not sure. Ichiro got the huge extension for his age 34 year, but that is something of a special case. And I expect that Andruw's looking for even more than that.) And when you're looking for that one exclamation point season in the year before free agency, wouldn't you rather bet on the player who's a year younger? I see what you're saying, and they both seem plausible to me, but I think the 1-year deal just makes more sense. And I wouldn't mind seeing the Sox sign him in either case.

Movies that were as good as, or better than, the book
jackie hayes replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 07:26 PM) Not particularly, but I think the movie looks really cheesy. I generally dislike any movie that goes way over the top with CGI, though. Agreed. It reminds me of the story-telling parts within video games. I can't imagine watching that for 2 hours (or however long it is). Though I like the book, too. And the movie doesn't much resemble it, as far as I can tell. What I've seen makes me think more of 300 than of Beowulf. Only in cartoon form. Blech. -

QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 04:03 PM) Perhaps you were watching the movie version of M*A*S*H Two movies coming out from books that I am waiting to see, and my predictions: I Am Legend is in my favorite Top 10 list of all time. It will suck as a movie to the fans of the book. Although I love the irony of Will Smith in the title role. Beowulf the movie will be waaaay better then the book. The book is only a classic because it is the oldest surviving story in Old English. O no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no... No. No. Just, no. -
QUOTE(rockren @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 01:43 PM) They wouldn't deal Gallardo for much of anything. I believe Rick the Kick could be had just because the organization was so disappointed in his last year. Everyone knows he has potential at the plate, but he is dreadful in the field. Not to mention everyone in Milwaukee is SICK of Ricky going after off-speed low and away with two strikes on him. Again, I know there isn't any purpose or merit to talking about getting Weeks because he's not for sale. But he isn't impossible to get IMO. Gallardo OTH...is pretty much untouchable. I think the discussion was just hypothetical -- basically, where does Weeks rank among Milwaukee's youngins? I don't think anyone seriously was proposing we try to get Gallardo. At least, I hope not.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 03:32 PM) Ted Lilly AL ERA's 5.63 5.37 4.34 4.06 5.56 4.32 avg 4.88 NL-3.38 Jon Garland Al ERA 4.41 Im just sayin.... He may be a little better than league avg (yes he is league avg is 4.47) in the AL, but in the NL, if his ERA drops a point and a half which it seems to do when moving to the NL central, he would be flirting with an under 3 ERA. One pitcher for one year does not make a rule. Just going to the Brewers will not turn JG into Jake Peavy. And anyway, Lilly's era last year was 3.83, not 3.38.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 06:39 PM) I hear they tickle the animals to death, and if that doesn't work they play interviews with Nicolas Cage on a continuous loop, which either results in the animals dying of boredom or committing suicide. No, less cruelty. And they're careful about it. They don't let just anybody call his meat Cage-free.

QUOTE(BurlyMan56 @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 10:25 PM) If you're gonna quote something, please quote what I said plus the explanation along with it. I would take Crawford over Cabrera any day. Give up the farm. I appreciate your sarcasm. Like I said, Cabrera is an absolute stud but if we do get him and do nothing else, we'll be still have the slow power guys in the middle of the lineup that can't get anything done if there's no one on base in front of them. Get a leadoff man, ie. Crawford, Figgins and then worry about getting a guy like Cabrera. If we give up the farm for the leadoff guy, so be it. The comparisons to Carlos Lee are similar and we did nothing with Carlos. If you want Cabrera than have fun with Jerry Owens as your leadoff man. A good point. You can give the farm up for Cabrera and be happy but if we finish third the next two years, he will see the $$$ and will be in pinstripes. Even if he does come here, Thome/Konerko all older, JD might be injury prone at that point, Crede will be gone, Fields will be gone in the trade that sent him here, there would be no stability for him to want to stay here. See?, I didn't eliminate anything. And, hahahahahahahaha.....

Braylon Edwards is a FREAK. AP + BE will be the scourges of the NFL for the next decade.

As bad as the Bears are, the Ravens' offense has to make you feel better. JO at lt, Grubbs starting as a rookie guard, experienced, renowned qb at the helm, accomplished rb for a starter, better #1 veteran receiver, Todd Heap at te... And they still suck even worse.

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 06:34 PM) I wonder if the Dodgers aren't waiting to see what's going to happen with A Rod b4 making a move for Cabrera. No reason to think ARod moves before Cabrera. If anything, the fact that the Angels are interested in both might make Cabrera more likely to move first.

QUOTE(PAUL KONERKO 14 @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 06:25 PM) I also see their offers being a lot better than what we got. What would we give them, Gio and Crede/Fields plus more? Okay, all due respect, but read the threads on this subject and your question is answered. As of now, it sounds like the Yanks refuse to offer any one of the big three, the Angels will offer Wood + a pittance, the Sawks won't offer any big youngins, and noone's really heard from the Dodgers. Now, I don't believe that's the end of it, but just supposing those refusals were legitimate, I don't see why we wouldn't have a shot.
