  1. QUOTE(TheHolyBovine @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 10:00 PM) In "internet land"? You must have an AMAZING post office. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 10:00 PM) The Sox simply don't want to sign him, that's how it will not happen. This whole thing was initiated by Buehrle and leaked to the media so that the Sox had to deal with it. Their way of dealing with it is to use the NTC as an excuse to not sign him. I think the Sox position is that he is simply not worth signing to the proposed deal. It makes sense when you have a stable of young major league ready starters like Gavin Floyd waiting in the wings....at least from the Sox perspective. Wasn't Mark's rep the first person to say that absolutely nothing had been talked about, that nothing was going on? If the Sox just don't want to keep him, why not just go along with that? Why did they seem so much more reluctant to say that? Personally, I think a NTC is a pretty big deal. Any pitcher is a huge risk, although I think Mark is giving a big enough discount to take that risk. But now that Mark has shown some flexibility on that point, I'll really look at what the Sox offer. There's definitely a deal in the middle there.
  2. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 09:54 PM) This goes for everyone. Enough with the shots at people. No personal attacks. Says the guy with the Earl Weaver avy...
  3. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 09:39 PM) Because honestly, for whatever reason it seems like the Sox don't want to get it done. Then why take him off the table in trade talks? Especially when every team reportedly has taken any top prospect off the table? See, I stopped following all this a week ago...every time I'm out...they pull me back IN...
  4. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 7, 2007 -> 09:28 PM) The Sox continue to dig themselves in a terrible, terrible hole. But don't you look at this like Rosenthal did? That this is too close for no deal to happen? There just seem to be so many potential compromises, if Mark is willing to accept some trade risk, that allow the Sox to save face, too. How can this not happen?
  5. QUOTE(fattyguy78 @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 11:27 AM) from rotoworld: MLB announced Friday that Neifi Perez has been suspended for 25 games after testing positive for a banned stimulant. The suspension is effective immediately and it sounds like the Tigers may call up Ryan Raburn to take his place on the roster. Losing Perez isn't much of a blow to the Tigers given that he's hitting .172 with a .487 OPS. Raburn, 26, is hitting .292 with solid power and speed at Triple-A Are they crazy? Why have a backup useless Perez if you're not gonna use him?
  6. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 01:18 PM) Like I said earlier... if a person is prosecuted for a crime commited while part of the executive branch of government, the executive power to pardon or commute should be nullified. That would seem to be ideal. Remember, Cheney is not part of the executive branch. Scooter was a subordinate to Cheney. Therefore, Scooter was not part of the executive branch. Problem solved.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2007 -> 07:20 PM) I know this won't be said, but both sides are playing some hardcore staredown games here. If this deal really doesn't happen, its pretty sad because of how close they really are. That being said, with it this close, I'll bet someone blinks. What about this for a compromise? Mark rejects the full 10-5 NTC (I'm pretty sure he can do this under the CBA) in exchange for the Sox giving him a full NTC for the first 2 years and a very strong but not full NTC in the 3rd year (maybe just the Cards, Cubs, and Brewers -- just spitballing). The 4th year is as weak as the CBA allows, but with a good trade kicker. It gives MB excellent protection (in terms of moving his family and being with a team he likes) for 3 out of the 4 years, and compensation if the Sox need to move him for that last year. Like everyone else, just trying to see how this thing could work. Pay no mind...
  8. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 5, 2007 -> 06:25 PM) If he kept most of the rotation he still would have plenty of prospects he could move to get Roberts (maybe not any prospect that was of LaRoche's caliber but he could still offer something) and a guy like Roberts would significantly upgrade the Sox offense and make the club just a far more efficient ball club (because I think we need speed). Just a comment on this part. The Sox are NOT getting Roberts. Angelos nixed that LaRoche trade personally, because he sees Roberts as a Ripkenish face of the organization and a swell guy. The Sox would have to overwhelm Baltimore, and, even though he's good, he's not that good.
  9. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) Jenkins has a strong enough arm to play RF and is very good in the outfield. Also, I am more of a believer in having left handed left fielders and right handed right fielders. Unless the left handed guy had an absolute canon arm, but Sweeney's arm isn't a canon, he just has an above average arm.. Plus, that seems to be the White Sox philosphy as Sweeney has only played CF and LF in the minors this season (and last), and in his brief stint in the majors. When Dye was DH, instead of putting Sweeney in RF, they left him in at Left. Maybe, but Jenkins hasn't played rf at all this year. If Sweeney's up to the position (and from the limited amount of time I've seen him, I think he is), you'd prefer to see him there, since he's likely to be around longer than Jenkins would be. I doubt the Sox go after Jenkins, anyway.
  10. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 02:18 PM) I really don't see what there is to dislike about Geoff Jenkins so much? Please enlighten me. I don't dislike Jenkins, but he is very streaky. Usually a classic 2nd half player. And he'd take left with Sweeney in right, if they were both starting.
  11. As it is July 4, I think it is an appropriate time for Democrats to stop and reflect on our nation and its ideals. For over 200 years, the United States has persevered, as a beacon of liberty to all those outside the country, as a refuge for those who suffer from persecution, political and religious, abroad, as a place of economic opportunity, as a champion of equality and democracy, as an idea. So now on this our country's birthday, when we celebrate the willing of our independence by the immortal words of Thomas Jefferson, I ask you this one question, Democrats. Why do you hate America?
  12. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 02:20 PM) I was watching this... that Kobayashi practically threw up all the food in his mouth at the end, it was sick. And then he tried to re-eat it and the rest of the hot dogs. He's such a sore loser, and his jaw didn't look stiff to me. GO USA, woot! Come on, I'm happy too, but Kobayashi basically made this what it is today. No need to take shots at one of my heroes. Pretty amazing how these eating records don't get edged out, ever. When the record's broken, it's usually just destroyed.
  13. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 4, 2007 -> 12:22 AM) We'll just take Cole Hamels off their hands. No way... Dude has a 3.87 era. In the AL, that's at least a 6. Carrasco's still a hell of a prospect. Not that they'd give him up, just saying, he's there if they're there at the deadline.
  14. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:35 AM) He's skipping both summer leagues because of it. Okay, but the Bulls knew about the injury before the draft, and I haven't seen anyone too concerned about the injury before now. The summer leagues are nice and all, but...well, I really don't see any big difference whether or not he's playing. When he starts missing practices at the start of the season, then I'll worry.
  15. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 3, 2007 -> 02:17 AM) So Noah has a partial tear in his shoulder? Great. Just great. I haven't heard anyone suggest that it's a big deal, nor that it's news. I mean, of course it'd be better if it weren't there, but why do you think it'll even be a problem?
  16. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 08:03 PM) Since there is no DUI, I'll put the over/under at the end of the week for how long it takes to see the obligatory "the Bears were racist and judgemental to release Tank" column(s). After the orgy of self-righteousness most of the columnists went on when he was cut? That'd be a tough transition.
  17. QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 09:21 PM) By the date, it looks like they were referring to the trade deadline. No, they were discussing a waiver wire deal. The important date was August 15. Here's the story: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2539544 QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 09:37 PM) It's just 10 years of service time, which means the rights could kick in midseason. I also originally though the 10 years meant 10 full calendar years, but that must be wrong. Because many people linked me to that Andruw Jones article, and I found a very similar article about Pudge Rodriguez when he played for Texas. I even found information today that says a player can only use his 10-5 rights to block a trade to no more than 13 clubs. I don't know if it is credible. That's if he renounces his 10-5 rights in a contract signed before they kick in -- you must include at least limited trade protection. The NTC must protect against at least 13 teams. The relevant part of the CBA:
  18. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 05:58 PM) That's correct. Coming into this season Mark has 6.078 years of ML service time, which means his 10/5 protection will not become effective until 2011. My apologies for believing it was 2010, as I heard Scott Merkin say this on the Score yesterday afternoon and failed to double-check him. Link? There's a Buster Olney quote from last year re Andruw Jones, which said his 10-5 rights would kick in on Aug 15 or 16 -- exactly 10 years after his debut. And I've heard a couple times in the press that Buehrle's 10-5 rights would commence in the middle of the season. I believe the .078 would mean 78 days (and 170-some constitutes a full year, per the CBA), not 7.8% of a season. That would mean he would cross the 10-year mark in the middle of 2010. Where does it say the rights don't begin until the next season?
  19. And every Seattle fan who hears, "manager of the Seattle Mariners resigns", starts praying that he missed one magical word at the beginning of the press release...
  20. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 05:32 PM) Ha. I benched him because I didn't want to risk my ERA and WHIP lead, and I needed 18 K's to catch up to the person who starts about 10 different starters a week. I benched him in a roto league. I said, I want to see 2 consecutive good starts... Yeah, well, I've seen 'em. And man, am I pissed.
  21. Lincecum has 9 strikeouts in 4 innings. He might be good, that's all I'm saying.
  22. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) You're right, I should have made my response more clear. I'm fairly certain contracts cannot be ammended either. Maybe it's legal, and it just doesn't happen, but I certainly cannot remember one instance of it. I'm pretty sure they can be amended, but the changes must pass the MLBPA's muster -- anything the player is giving up must be equally compensated somehow. The player can't agree to reduce the deal. If they're just adding a NTC, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Iirc, this came up with the ARod trade. I don't remember exactly what the issue was, but there were rumors about some changes in the contract which the MLBPA said it would not agree to (because the concessions offered on the other side didn't match what ARod would be giving up).
  23. Good job, Josh. 6th triple of the year, breaking the tie with St L for worst in the majors.
  24. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 1, 2007 -> 09:28 AM) Oliver Perez scratched today with a sore back, Pelfrey recalled to make the start. Let's hope Philly brings the bats. On behalf of my fantasy team, let me say, I hate you, 3E8. That's right, I kill the messenger.
  25. These challenge trades are always tough. I like Zambrano over Halladay. Besides health, Halladay just doesn't strike out as many batters and his team is in a tougher situation. Zambrano vs Verlander, meh, go with your hunch. Verlander has a better team and has pitched better this year, Zambrano has the history and a better k rate and he pitches in the NL, in a weak division, too. Verlander's had control issues lately, Zambrano always has control issues... It's very close.
