  1. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 06:54 PM) I think Tank may already be on probation for weapons charges. He may be in a lot of trouble. If your neighbor was charged with it, you would probably feel differently. Tank appears to be a great football player, but a bad guy. Yup. It would freak me out. I never said otherwise.
  2. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 06:19 PM) 6 counts sounds like pointing it as squirrels wearing police uniforms. From what I've read, here and in the Trib article, it sounds like he wasn't home when the raid happened. Anyway, the reason I asked if that was just the start of the charges is that the situation sounds much more serious than that charge.
  3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 06:07 PM) Its amazing how desensitized we are to criminals in professional sports now, isn't it? Unlawful use of a gun sounds like shooting at squirrels in your backyard. I mean, you shouldn't do it, but it's nothing to get excited about.
  4. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 06:03 PM) Apparently he has been charged with 6 counts of unlawful use of a gun. Per: Comcast William Jackson, through Bears.com MB/TalkBears Is that just a start? That doesn't sound bad.
  5. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 05:59 PM) So who'd be left for you guys at DT if Johnson and Harris didn't play in the playoffs, and how much does that impact the Bears's ability to stop the run? Scott, Boone, Idonije,...? Those are the only ones I can think of. It wouldn't be good, for the run or pass rush. Leave it at that.
  6. That's pretty cool. Guy doesn't have a wikipedia page. How do you get in the Guinness and not have a wikipedia page?
  7. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 02:33 AM) Where have we kept pace? The payroll will be down from last year and they refused to overpay for anything despite obvious needs on the team? In a few years most of the high paid players on the team won't be here anymore, so at that point are the White Sox going to have to bite the bullet and pay 10 million to get a #4 starter and 20 million to get a front line starter? If there's one observation that I've made from this off-season, it's that I think Kenny Williams is starting to make moves in the Billy Beane mentality. Sure, he's only made one move, but it's hard to accept that he couldn't have gotten at least 1 above average experienced MLB player in return. As Tony said, we had the 4th highest payroll in the league. I don't believe that's much different than we've been before. If we weren't keeping pace, we'd fall in the payroll order.
  8. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 02:24 AM) Suppose you are right on the front of the Sox. But as you said, they'll never give out a deal like Soriano got. It the market continues to go up as it has this year, the Sox likely will be like the Twins, A's and Royals. I guess they can "afford" to overpay some players, but certainly not 18 mil/year, and if they do overpay, the money had better be well spent on a worth while talent. So when the salaries of players are going up all over the league, and payrolls are thus increasing at the same rate, the Sox will be the one team that doesn't increase its payroll? Why? We've obviously kept pace so far, why are we going to suddenly stop? Soriano's deal was idiotic. That's why the Sox'll never give out a deal like that -- to a player like Soriano.
  9. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 11:55 PM) Check your atlas. Toronto is located north of the border. It must suck to be geographically challenged. Uh oh. That's 5 minutes in the penalty box for you.
  10. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 06:00 PM) Aren't the Red Sox going to get a windfall broadcasting games in Japan? The Yankees make a ton broadcasting Matsui's games, and this pitcher is a bigger deal. If he's as good as advertised, this will be the steal of the offseason. Of course if he's a like the "fat toad" the Yankees signed, it will be a colossal gaffe. Neyer claimed that international broadcast revenues are split evenly among major league teams.
  11. Just interesting. ESPN analysts guess the outcome. I dunno when the predictions were made. Noone expected such a low figure. Stark (6y, $62 mil) and Law (4 y, $32 mil) were the closest.
  12. QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 03:19 PM) Is that the mindset over there? They'd rather see players their players leave and have success over here? That's interesting. I can understand there's some pride involved in seeing your boys go and succeed at the highest level (and they're a very proud people), but if I'm a fan of his Japanese team I'd rather see him stick around for those two extra years. What do I care if my team makes some loot? This is nothing but me trying to put my feet in a Japanese fan's shoes. Why would he be hated? B/c $51 mil is an enormous amount of money for a Japanese team, something like 300% of Seibu's annual payroll. Seibu already budgeted the money towards higher payroll, park improvements, etc. Imagine what the Sox could do with a $300 mil gift. If you return, the team can't use that to improve and the fans know he'll only stick around for one or two more years. Plus, from what I've read, there won't be any sympathy, since even the lowest offer is larger than his Japanese baseball salary. It doesn't sound as if he'd be welcomed back.
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 02:57 PM) The player doesn't have to sign if the player doesn't feel the contract is fair. Matz had to weight this contract offer versus the fact that he could have come to the U.S. in 2 years as a free agent, with the signing team not having to pay any posting fee at all. Yes, I understand that. But he would have been HATED in Japan for screwing over his team.
  14. Since it's clear the commish will allow it, now every team will bid huge amounts and lowball the player. I wonder how many players will still be willing to be posted before fa.
  15. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 01:10 PM) There was also a report that said Houston balked when we asked for Hirsh. I think that was just speculation, since Hirsh wasn't in the first reports about the trade.
  16. The Sawks' gambit is pretty interesting. Bid a huge amount, then guilt the player into signing. Cuz once that enormous bid is known, you'll be reviled if you return to Japan. For all the horrible wizardry of Boras, he got f***ed on this deal, if it ends up at $10-11 mil over 6 years.
  17. Tsao looked good for the minute he was healthy.
  18. Matsuzaka and Boras will fly back to Boston, according to the Boston Herald. If the $11 mil per over 6 is correct, wow. I can't imagine that would be Boras's idea.
  19. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 02:49 AM) He was one of the most unimpressive pitchers we've faced in years. I think the Sox had 12 hits or so against him in 2+ innings. Yeah, but he had surgery after going on the dl. Good minor league record, decent year before last. Homer Bailey can't take 2 spots in the rotation.
  20. Brandon Claussen was nontendered. Kinda surprised.
  21. Rick Ankiel, though rotoworld speculates he'll stay with the Cards. Wilkerson got a contract.
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 07:54 PM) Take a look at Ed Sprague, Kelly Gruber and Fernando Tatis' career stats compared to Crede's. Ed Sprague especially. There has been many a third baseman to peak at age 28 or so and put up a 30/100 season never to come close again. Careful, boy. FTat'll see you eat those words a year from now.
  23. Caveat: From the exchange, not the thread. I think this is a pretty damn interesting subject.
  24. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 10, 2006 -> 11:01 PM) Whatever. This is getting ridiculous. I'm willing to bury the hatchet. Okay. I'm happy to walk away.
