  1. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 21, 2007 -> 11:56 PM) thought so what, that you are being a little prick nitpicky by harping on my lame attempt at humor instead of the real life humor in a peace-loving Democrat starting a fight with someone they didn't know and tracked down from a website over their political beliefs? Yeah, that must be it. Careful -- you talk that way to us Dems and you take your chances. My favorite part of this is a Republican admitting that his party comes second when it comes to an interest in peace.
  2. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 20, 2007 -> 01:41 PM) Not sure of anything, and I said nothing of the sort. I'm saying that having a weak spot there isn't a death sentence to the Sox' competitiveness. As for McCarthy's 4 starts, those were great, and better than anyone could have anticipated. Maybe something similar happens this year, maybe not. But it seems likely the starters will improve. And as Mr. Law points out, our offense is far better than 2005's, even if Pods, Uribe and Anderson don't improve over 2006. Therefore, as I said, I'm not overly worried about that slot. Who called it a "death sentence"? McCarthy and El Duque combined for 32 starts (McCarthy had 10 starts, 4 decisions), with an 4.90 era. You say, "As long as Floyd or whomever can do that..." Our rotation showed last year that it's not such an easy thing to do. And that line was from 2005, when the rest of our pitching was absurdly good. Even though the offense now is better than 2005, it's not enough to make up the difference. The team ERA+ that year was 123, comparable to that of the mid-1990s Braves teams. Last year it was down to 101, basically league average. Our offense went from a little below average to just slightly above average. And we don't figure to go well beyond that, considering the monster year from Dye, the relative health of the team, the lack of any breakout candidates. We need that 5th spot to produce, or we won't be in the playoffs. Now if Thornton can succeed, maybe Floyd can, too. But how someone can look at his performance and not be concerned, I don't understand.
  3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 20, 2007 -> 12:54 PM) Exactly what I was thinking, and people forget that. Our #5 from 2005 finished the season 9-9, 5.12. And we had the best starting staff in baseball (or very close). As long as Floyd or whomever can do that and stay healthy, I'm not overly concerned about that 5th slot. You're conveniently forgetting the other part of the #5 slot. And you're sure the rest of the staff'll match the rest of the 2005 staff?
  4. I'm not as worried as some, but there are some reasons. Freddy was bad for much of last year, but Gavin Floyd was worse. I am concerned about this. Now, you don't need a 5th starter with a 4 era, 170 k, etc. But a 7 era (Floyd's current career average) will not get it done. Obviously this is based on a small sample, but it's not as if he's recently pitched well in the minors, either. He hasn't pitched well at any level since 2004, in AA and a small stint in the majors. I am also one of those who believes Coop is a mere mortal. So, we'll see. I've heard in response to this that our fifth starters weren't world-beaters in 2005, and that's true. But, they were probably just a bit below league average, not miles below, as Floyd HAS been. And the rest of the staff and the pen was just sick. We aren't likely to see that level again, and we certainly can't count on it. Our fifth starter(s -- oh, please, not too plural) will get almost as many starts as any other slot. It's not a small piece of the puzzle. Who knows what Buehrle will look like? The guy was beyond awful in the second half. And like every Sox fan, I thought he'd break out of it every single turn. I think he'll break out of it now -- but obviously I was wrong for months, before. I'm a big fan of the bullpen, so I won't quibble there. Though I'd be much happier if Sisco starts in the minors, both for his development and because I'm a little leery of a 7+ era in the pen. The outfield is a big concern. Two unproductive china dolls are set to get much of the time there. Anderson HAS to hit better. Even though I think he can, I really doubt that he'll get the chance. All that given, I will give KW the benefit of the doubt. He's outguessed me with his pitcher deals more often than not. But I don't think it's hard to understand why someone would be concerned.
  5. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 01:40 AM) The Sox are going to be an absolute dyansty from 2012 on. And even though the Sox will continue to refuse to sign free agent pithcers, it won't matter because of all the can't-miss surefire ace pitching prospects the Sox have traded for. Danks-Gonzalez-Floyd will be better than Smoltz-Maddux-Glavine because all three of the Sox pitchers will get to 300 wins. Easily. I am happy that the Sox are looking to strengthen the minor league system, though. I was being sarcastic, but only in the sense that it seems awfully funny to talk about signing someone 3 full seasons away from free agency. Imho.
  6. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 01:12 AM) I'm not that certain about signing Ichrio. Anyone know aside from him, which other OF's are possible 2008 FA's? How I feel is, either FA or bust. Enough of the trading prospects, "win-now" mentality. Develop talent, and with available funds sign necessary components. If everything falls into place, we shouldn't have to give up anything but two draft picks for Ichiro. Andruw Jones is the other big of name. You also got Carlos Guillen and Zambrano. Edit: And I almost forgot, Vernon Wells.
  7. Miguel Cabrera'd be great, but I think what KW's really doing is clearing out payroll for Ryan Howard after the 2010 season and Albert Pujols after the 2011 season, to replace Konerko and Thome. And for half of the Marlins. And Rickie Weeks and Delmon Young. It's gonna be awesome to be a Sox fan then.
  8. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 18, 2007 -> 03:02 PM) And, the White Sox are more than willing to pay. They like to find players that other teams want to get rid of, either because they feel that player is finished (Thome) or wants to get out from under their salary (Vazquez). The Phils didn't think Thome was finished, they knew what they had in Howard. And Vazquez demanded a trade.
  9. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Feb 18, 2007 -> 11:46 AM) Buehrle isn't alone, however. Outfielder Jermaine Dye and second baseman Tadahito Iguchi are also free agents at the end of the season. You forgot Crede.
  10. There's never been an absolute win standard. Koufax only had 165. Being absurdly good for a short while has always been reason enough to enter the HOF. But Buehrle is not that dominant pitcher, so his only chance would be to perform very well (2005 level performance) for a long, long time -- on a winning team, to boot.
  11. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 01:31 PM) Anyone else get an inflated contract around then, or just Millwood from that jackass in Texas? One outsized contract should not set the market rate. At the AS break, Mark started sucking, and was going down hill. Maybe he didn't like the 3 years, but I don't think $11 milliion was lowballing him. It may not have been an attempt to lick his balls, but it wasn't hitting him in them either. Burnett got $11 mil per over 5 years, Washburn got $9.5 per over 4 years. Garland got his extension for $10 mil per over 3 years in the offseason, and everyone was surprised that he came so cheap. It was pretty clear that the price of pitching had gone up, to the point where $33 mil over 3 years obviously wouldn't cut it.
  12. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 11:32 AM) By comparison to the contracts handed out now, yes. But at the ASB? $11 mil a year was pretty good coin at that time. Kevin Millwood had already signed his $55 mil over 5 contract, so I'd say $11 per for 3 looked pretty low at the time.
  13. QUOTE(beautox @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 10:24 PM) Charlie Haeger Aww, yeah!!! w00t
  14. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) I don't care that you said otherwise. This has to be a joke. It just has to be. ^^^^ Lmfao. This is too awesome.
  15. Bastages!!! Sign-up moved to Feb 16! Damn you, Yahoo!!!!!!!!
  16. QUOTE(danman31 @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 12:31 AM) Not really. His apology per SportsCenter said he shouldn't have said it, not that he didn't believe what he said. Yeah, that's true, his apology didn't say much. But, as eager as he was, I don't even believe that he was sorry for saying it. You have to know what the reaction is gonna be. To go as far as he did, I have to think you're dying to get just that reaction.
  17. When you've gone that far, why bother with an apology? That just makes you a liar on top of everything else.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 12:03 AM) Someone mentioned Molly Hatchett. Flirtin with Disaster was a solid contribution. Whoa boap boap yeah!
  19. QUOTE(chisoxfan14 @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) what Ben Davis thread!?? fill me in. I forget! Wha?????? You don't remember the "Why does Ben Davis take naked pics of Willie and D'Angelo?" thread?
  20. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 11, 2007 -> 04:00 AM) There isn't s*** that's clear at this point. And...Vazquez easily had the best peripherals last year out of any White Sox starter, so to say he's not good is ignorant. He's pitched one year for the White Sox, and hasn't pitched back to back years in the same league since 2002-2003. I agree about Vazquez, but still, it's clear that the Tigers had better sp last year. And with their youth and the talent that everybody's been talking about for years, I'm not gonna bet against them in any case, even as I'm consciously trying to be a homer -- add in the fact that we have Floyd 'o the 65 career era+ as our 5th starter, and I'd say they clearly look better at this point. I'll go with Kalapse's ranking.
  21. Lots of water. No pop, oranges instead of oj. Doing normal tasks more arduously will do more than you think -- walking to lunch instead of driving, that sort of thing. But, 3-3.5k calories to less than 2k is a HUGE drop. Your body's not going to ramp down gradually with a drop like that. If you want to maintain the weight loss, you need to build muscle, too. And that requires some calories (of the right type). You should not lose more than 2-3 pounds per week. Having lost 15 so far this year, that's in the high end of the range, probably too much, so you may have overdone it on the cal cutdown. Cal in minus cal out will tell you a lot about weight loss, but if you don't do it wisely, you'll eventually be too tired to maintain it. Figure out the diet you'll need at your ideal weight (considering every aspect of health) and adjust gradually to that, not some shock diet designed to merely get your weight down. Do the same with exercise. Good luck. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Feb 11, 2007 -> 02:55 AM) 2: When you go out somewhere, no matter where it is, park as far away as you realistically can without getting ridiculous. People are always trying to find the closest spots to park in so their lazy asses don't have to walk. Absoutely nothing wrong with having to walk an few extra minutes. 3: Walking, walking and more walking. Not everybody is a runner. I get that. But everybody can walk. Instead of driving everywhere, try walking to places that are in decent walking distance (no more than 20 minutes away). For example: there's a Blockbuster video store right by my house. It only takes me about 3 or 4 minutes to get their driving. It takes me 15-20 minutes to get there walking. That's absolutely nothing. You wouldn't believe the difference walking just 40 minutes a day can have. I know it would be kind of hard to do a whole lot of walking now, due to the weather. But when the weather starts to get better, walk, walk, walk! Bingo. On (2), it's usually not "few extra minutes", but "minute", singular. Amazing that people spend 10 min looking for a parking spot to save them 1 minute, max. Sad, really. And on (3), I enjoy running, but I'm bad at it. Good walkers beat me. But in any case, if you can walk to the supermarket, do it. To the Bb, do it. To the strip joint, etc. Not as "exercise", but as a routine. It will help more than you can imagine.
  22. I'd like to play. 1. Prefer h2h. 2. Moderate. I've played in about 2 leagues per season for the past 4 seasons or so. 3. I played in league 2 last year, which was good. 4. If needed. Yahoo signups start Feb 15, baby!
