Freddy Garcia speculation (Closed - Garcia Signs W/Mets)
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jan 22, 2009 -> 02:41 AM) Yanks and Mets front runners for Garica per Rosey. I saw that story on the MLB page today. I am only speculating, but I think the Sox are looking at a more durable FA starting pitcher and there is a chance as things get closer to early to mi February we see a signing. I still like Garland as an option. -
Depth chart in January and predictions of utter failure and ruin? Must have been sugested by a Cubs fan. I will wait till Ozzie Guillen and Ken Williams tell us who is on the 25 man roster. I will then join in the predictions of gloom and doom... unless we win of course

Freddy Garcia speculation (Closed - Garcia Signs W/Mets)
elrockinMT replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (TLAK @ Jan 18, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) MLB Gameday shows him at 92 several times in the make up game he pitched against the White Sox on September 28, 2008. His last fastball in the 6th inning was at 91. He left the game leading 2-1, having thrown 72 pitches. It's a question of durability, not a question of ability, with Freddy Garcia. I agree with this and I think it's worth pointing out that Bartolo Colon's injury issues last year wasn't his arm, if I remember correctly, but Freddie did have major arm problems. But, he will be two years removed from that and I think worth a contract with incentives like BC got. But, maybe the Sox need to aim a bit higher for a pitcher. I still like Jon Garland as an option. -
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 10:48 PM) I was all about Owens last year. But the dude cant stay healthy... Im back on the Anderson bandwagon. He is our best defensive outfielder. Having him out there will probably save us many runs this year. If he can just hit .250 i'll be more than pleased... The only issue we have right now is who the hell is our leadoff hitter? Its asking an aweful lot for Getz to jump right in as a leadoff hitter... I like both Owens and Anderson, but Brian is better offsnively and is avery good fielder. Owens can run like the wind, but my concern is we might be looking at a player in the Pods mode and that ain't good cause he would be injured like 1/2 the year

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 06:28 PM) I can see Contreras staying with the Sox in a lesser capacity in '10, probably as a 6th starter-long reliever, depending on how he does in '09. It will be of utmost performance that the organization treats him with respect and dignity, regardless of how he performs. Our pipeline to JTorres/Cuba is alive and well, and the next defector or two we get will probably be pitchers who grew up idolizing Jose. He has too much pride to be a sixth starter

QUOTE (Steff @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 05:22 AM) http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9090020...ling-for-Hudson Encouraging news for the White Sox: Right-hander Jose Contreras, recovering from a ruptured left Achilles tendon, has lost 25 pounds and already is throwing off a mound. Contreras was expected to miss at least nine months after undergoing surgery in August. His timetable could be accelerated. That is good news. The expereince and competitive spirit that Jose C brings is great for our pitching staff. Steff, I see in that same article that Ropsenthal says the Sox are willing o give Freddie G a chance at the rottaion also. What is the latests on that fellow if you know anything about it?

The story about $4M from AZ. was on MLB I think or ESPN so I tend to believe the report is correct. It also went on to say the money just isn't there for the remaining FA's and they will be in for a rude awakening on what they think their value is and the amounts offered. We have a situation where a few big names got way overpaid nd there's nothing left. Of course there is always the Yankmees. I suppose they still have a billion or so dollars left. If we had or have the money I would really like to see Jon Garland back with the Sox, but if he wants $10M it won't happen.

Tribune stories on Sox & economy, KW and Colon
elrockinMT replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
$5M will get you a player for maybe one year. I think the economics of it all are a concern, but I think it's more of the fact we just don't want to spend a lot of money on someone maybe no better than who we already have and break up team chemistry. It's complicated and the formula for success is 25 players and not one. I don't like the idea of signing a player or trading for one that is only going to be here a year. We did an even swap lat year with O Cab for Jon Garland and they are both still out there on the free agent market. I am guessing that budgetwise maybe even $8 to $10M is too much for us to pay. I hate to think we might jettison a player like Dye or Konerko only because of money. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 09:13 PM) The Sox won't tolerate a 6+ ERA from Colon. He'll either be put on the DL or released, because there's virtually no way Poreda/Marquez/Richard/Broadway/Egbert can't duplicate a 6+ ERA or so. Exactly. They did that with Loaiza and I thought signing him was agod option at the tiem also. If he doesn't have it he doesn't have it and they will release him. My guess is it won't take that long either to see what he can deliver.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 15, 2009 -> 08:36 PM) So right now, I'd imagine the backend of the rotation is BC and JM, with CR in the pen and AP in AAA. That's a lot of abreviations IMO

Three links on Chsiox.com for this signing. It's like all our troubles are over and our needs met for 2009. Bart will take us to the pennant. Funny though that this is the biggest news the Sox can make, but I do have to say I have no problem with the signing of BC. Now I wonder about Freddie?

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 10:34 PM) Nothing like bringing back familiar names to the team. Get Garland for cheap too. I'd like Jon more than the other names mentioned

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 09:33 PM) Just announced on 670 the Sox are looking hard at signing Bartolo Colon as well as Freddy Garcia. Take it for what it's worth. A story just posted on MLB.Com reports the Sox are one of three or four teams that Freddie Garcia may sign with. I haven't seen anything on Bartolo Colon thouhg. We have heard the rumors about Garcia before also. Both are injury risks obviously, but are very good pitchers if healthy and cheaper alternatives then Loew, et al. I wonder where Pedro winds up.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) Pods cost Carlos Lee to acquire. Lee signed a $100 million contract. Its not like he was found on the scrap heap. What's your point? The thing I have seen about this team and have said it before is that we develop a number of real good players and when "paying the fiddler" comes around we get rid of them. I am only saying originally that Pods did a good job at what he was asked to do.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 09:31 PM) Yep, Dye's mechanics in getting behind the ball and/or charging it are some of the worst you'll ever see. The only people that think Dye is good defensively are those that listen to Hawk and DJ too much. Another poster says just the opposite about listening to Ole Hawkeroo. Who are we supposed to believe? I'll believe what I see and admittedly it isn't often enough, but J Dye does a good job in RF
-
QUOTE (sircaffey @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 05:33 PM) No he's not. His range has become very limited. Let's not overvalue Jermaine. He's a great hitter, but leaves plenty to be desired defensively. I respectfully disagree and my analysis of J Dye has been backed up by baseball pros. Dye still has very good range and handles RF very well. If he has lost a step his experience makes up for it. He is not a defensive liability in any way. Th hitting aspect speaks for itself for sure.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 05:57 PM) The problem is most people use the Yankees version of building a team. Get all the best plyers and you'll have the best team. This doesn't always work. With the Yankees that extra 80 million dollars per year of media money helps them. Most teams need to get the parts to fit together. Case in point a player like Podsednik. No one will say he was a great player but in a given game he stole a base advanced on a bunt and scored on a sac fly and we won 1-0. Now would I rather have Johnny Damon, Grady Sizemore or Brian Roberts? YES. But that just isn't an option with those players weither not available or not available unless you were bent over barstool. Picking up good players who fit their roles is the way the Sox will win. I agree with that observation. Pods is a great example and in 2005 he filled the role we needed and filled it very well. I would love to see the big splash made in signing a free agent, but in reality one player most likely isn't going to make a winner out of a team. You need 25 players all working together and filling their roles. If we sign or trade for anyone they must fill the need and not just be the big name.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 03:46 AM) I think any team that trades for Dye is looking at him as a 1B/DH type, who could play LF. Again we see the value of Jermaine Dye undervalued. Dye is a very good defensive RF'er with a strong throwing arm. If we would ever trade him, and I hope we don't, we open up a hole in our team and someone fills their need with a very valuable addition.

One of the first "projected" standings, Sox dead last
elrockinMT replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I will let you know in October how the predictions panned out. I will say that the Sox have too much talent to finish last, but it is getting to be a tighter division for sure. If you base a pennant race finish off how much money you spend (or don't) the Yankmees should be runaway winners every year. But they ain't ... -
Kenny wanted him bad so I hope he isn't a dissapointment. I know youngsters, especially pitchers can be a gamble, so here's hoping we have a good one on board.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 09:08 PM) I dont know whats going to happen... First it was Brian Roberts then it was Michael Young, and now its Chone Figgins.... Will the real Sox leadoff hitter please stand up? Jerry Owens is coming

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 08:17 PM) How many hours until JD gets traded after this post? Oh-Oh

QUOTE (MO2005 @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) Mark my words...Jermaine Dye will be the starting right fielder for the Whitesox in 2009! I hear you Kenny Williams

It's so nice to see we can be the new supplier of talent to the Angels so they can win pennants
