QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) In his last 22 games, Beckham is hitting .304 with an .876 OPS. Not bad for an official lost cause. I don't know how long he has to be adequate for me to believe it will last at this point. He's the king of extended decent runs in the midst of pure s***. Manto had suggested in an article earlier this year that Gordon gets by at times with pure talent, but his poor mechanics that were not fixed at the lower levels end up catching up to him. Going to be hard to know if what we see is talent manifesting itself (temporary success) or the permanent ironing-out of mechanical problems (long term success).

QUOTE (MarsupialMadness @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 12:15 PM) Amazing how he takes a story that has nothing to do with Notre Dame or the Cubs and he makes it all about Notre Dame and the Cubs. Great way to start your time at Soxtalk. Welcome!

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 12:00 PM) Here is a good one: http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/12/pf/college...aries/index.htm Average starting salary for all graduates $41k Average starting salary for teachers $37k As I said, teacher fairs are crammed to capacity. Equal pay, superior benefits and job guarantee. You just cant beat it. Well, you can do what some states are doing -- require a master's degree. This rules out a lot of folks. Whether that is a good thing or not is up to you to decide. I'm studying to teach in college and I can say the 6 years post-grad helps to narrow the field significantly.

But why is hours worked as teacher = hours worked as everything else? It's just not fair to such different professions to compare hours like the work intensity is the same or somehow comparable in the same timeframe. They are different. Imagine dealing with children...of any age, really. For most of us, we'd go on strike after an hour or two on the job with some of these little assholes. And there are aspects of other jobs that suck, but there isn't an empirical way to compare them and it is thoroughly unconvincing to myself and many others when you throw work hours, median income, and s*** like that at the "teacher compensation" argument.

I was in grade school. The first strike happened, my teacher explained what the twin towers were first. Then she said a plane crashed into one. She said something I didn't understand at the time -- "I hope it isn't a suicide sicko" She was right! I then spent the rest of my month glued to the TV with my mom. I fully believed what some commentator said (bet he'd take it back now): "George Bush is putting himself in line with the likes of Abraham Lincoln" One thing I'm wondering about, though. People on my facebook keep referring to the "cowards" that pulled off 9/11. What exactly makes them cowardly? I think they did something terrible, but s*** they gave up their lives to do it.

I wish I could have been ITT earlier to give you all s*** for nay-saying in the first 4 or so innings of this game. I can only imagine how negative it got. -

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 06:59 PM) BTW did they send that one guy that really sucked back to the minors? Olmedo? No, they wouldn't send him down. They would have released him, but they haven't done that. It would make the White Sox look like an undesirable place to play...plus, he's the one that warms up the pitchers in between innings. -
I'm kind of ambivalent on Anonymous

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 04:30 PM) you say those as if they are bad. Maybe bad for inner city Chicago, but not in other areas. Those numbers look similar to the pay scale in the town I grew up in. I'm just saying what it is, I was surprised CPS made so much more. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 06:37 PM) I don't really like how in the media and in discussions everybody just assumes this is about teachers wanting more money. Typical attitude towards striking workers any time, though. That attitude in general will hold back progress in getting good compensation for workers. At least elucidate the facts like most of us are trying to in this thread. Sometimes the workers won't be in the right, sometimes they will. Sometimes it will be a matter of philosophical differences.

We're due for another 10+ game winning streak.

Like it or not, it's specialized labor that requires a good deal of education and is also essential to our society. I can't evaluate every individual area's teacher grievances, but comparing it to other professions doesn't make sense. I will say that the district where I'm from pays much less than CPS apparently. It is probably also much easier to each where I'm from than CPS, and living costs are way lower. That said, starting salary for a teacher with a BA where I am from is 30k. A 20 year tenured teacher with a masters make roughly 75k. Administrators make about 100 (principal, superintendent). I plan to teach in college, talk about some yummy hours, pay, benefits, vacations. The 10 years of college and the fact I'll be able to do things that nobody else can will make it all worth it though
-
Pay them more, allow principals/administrators to fire people. Done and done.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Sep 10, 2012 -> 12:22 PM) Just out of curiosity, what do you think Romney's campaign could do differently? Find a new candidate

If you increase the work day, you have to expect to increase pay by a similar proportion

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 8, 2012 -> 06:29 AM) Correct. When I set it up, I had the Sox going 31-23 and the Tigers 33-21 in the final 54 games to tie at 91-71. They were going ok for a while, but neither team is playing very well. The Sox are leading the division with the 7th best record in the AL. The AL Central: Where you can play bad baseball and be treated like a Champion. The poor records are an effect of the divisional depth
