QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 02:17 PM) So next question would be, is there anyone of of the picks that is still unsigned that is worth going that far over slot for? I know Ayala generated some talk with potentially being a much earlier pick. I know he said 200,000 was absolutely not what he was looking for...I wonder if what he wants is more like $1M or more like the 400-500k we can offer.

Something has to be done to improve the rotation

Youk and Bard for Thornton and Stewart. go. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 01:29 PM) I've heard they think he may have some disease too, because he was losing a ton of weight I guess. They think he may have developed Glutton/Wheat allergies or something. I heard this all on The Score a week or two ago. Yeah that was weird but apparently solved, he said he had gained most of his weight back before he even went back to Charlotte

Soxtalk has officially gone off its rocker. No way in hell I'd dump Adam Dunn. At this point he's more than a fair deal and you can't just go re-acquire guys that lead the MLB in home runs once you free up salary space. Rios is tough to call. If you care about this year (we did last time I checked, I can't tell what/if there is a coherent gameplan for the Soxtalk GM) you can't dump Rios right now, he's red hot and driving in runs at the same pace PK is. There's no reason to trade Peavy. Zero. Not unless you're conceding the division

I think this sort of reeks of being a showcase start for a potential deal. However, Zach has the raw tools to be a pretty effective starter with a pretty good sinker and a good change and a curveball that is sometimes there. Used correctly, he'll hardly need anything but his sinker. It's tough to get that sinker to play out of the pen so I'm interested in seeing if he can get a nice rhythm going and getting ground balls today. This aggressive, light hitting Cubs team should not do well against a sinker because I don't think they have much of an opposite field approach across the board nor are they patient enough to wait for pitches up in the zone. Unless he's absolutely nails in this outing, he probably goes down the instant we have another starting pitcher around. If he gets shelled, I don't think he'll go straight down...still have to wait for Danks/acquired pitcher.

GT: Sox vs. Other Chicago Team @ 7:10 CT (CSN)
Jake replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in 2012 Season in Review
Garza does not match up favorably against our fastball hitting team IMO inb4 someone posts stats that conflict what I'm saying -
If this is a problem from muscle imbalance, that's an inexcusable oversight from S&C/medical staff. That isn't hard to diagnose and doesn't take 4 weeks to treat if you find it early.
-
The chances of simultaneously cutting fat and building muscle are minute unless the individual is relatively untrained, has a considerable BF %, or is on the sauce
-
Bronze Titan anyone? Balta, see anything qualitatively good/bad in his outing? I'm interested in him, surprising lack of buzz for a former top prospect putting up decent numbers in AA (I know it's a repeat) and he has seemingly corrected that control problem from last season.

I ended up getting an HP Pavilion DV6t 15.6" Laptop on a steal from ebay. Gave that seller quite a once over to see if he was legit and he was. He is a graphics artist and decided he wanted something with a smaller screen for travel. Unfortunately (for him) he didn't make this decision until Day 23 of ownership and the HP return policy is 21 days. He never even installed Windows on it before putting it up on ebay. Booted windows from an external SSD and ran for 10 hours for me to make sure it wasn't a lemon. It has 11 months of factory warranty remaining, which DOES carry over to a second owner. He also has a return policy that allows me to return it to him if it has a bunch of out-of-the-box problems within 30 days. So what did I get for $650? • 2nd generation Intel® Core i5-2450M Processor (2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz) • 1GB AMD Radeon HD 7690M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics [HDMI, VGA] • 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) ((upgradable to 16GB)) • 640GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection • 15.6" Full HD HP Anti-glare LED (1920 x 1080) • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner Seems like a pretty good deal, the only things I could have gotten to boost performance is a higher RPM hard drive or an i7 chip -- I'm happy with the second gen i5 that isn't even the slowest version of itself. I think 1GB of dedicated graphics should be plenty to watch MLB.tv lol. If not I'll upgrade the hell out of the RAM to compensate. Most thrilled that I got the 1080p monitor, I wanted dat resolution but it was a $200 option on new laptops

On a personal note, I've decided to put my personal study to use and get my personal trainer certification I'm 90% going to get NSCA certified because I have access to the textbooks for free, though ideally I'd probably get the NASM cert

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 16, 2012 -> 11:15 PM) Anyone here try the KETO diet? I've tried some ketogenic diets and while there is a lot of conflicting research on their use, I can basically give you the rundown on current knowledge in the field and my personal experiences: -the state of ketosis offers no benefits (ketosis is the state in which your body completely switches from glucose to ketones for cellular fuel) -fat burning benefits occur at glycogen depletion, which is achieved via low (not necessarily zero) carbohydrate intake and high volume resistance exercise -ketogenic diets seem to be a higher risk for muscle wasting than typical calorie restriction diets -once glycogen depletion is complete, there is a cool opportunity to "load" carbs for 24-48 hours and gain miniscule to zero fat (sometimes fat burning continues) and in this period many will experience muscle growth via glycogen supercompensation, which can counteract potential muscle wasting during your low calorie, low carb periods....typically these carb loads can be done weekly -simply eating few to zero carbs offers no benefits unless you have an insulin-related health problem, it must be paired with a low calorie, high protein diet my personal thoughts: -it takes some work to keep your diet interesting when you can't eat carbs...you're basically left with meat, cheese, and fibrous vegetables -if you accidentally go into ketosis, you could experience some headaches or self-hatred for a short period of time -it may be best to change your normal meal frequency as it will be hard to be satiated on few calories -- maybe cut out breakfast or even breakfast and lunch, allowing you to have at least one large meal for the day to make you feel full -periodic carb loads work both physically and pysychologically...you get something to look forward to while you're so restricted and by the time you're down with the carb load you're going to be so full of carbs that you won't want to see them for a few days I can offer you an ebook from Lyle McDonald who has done oodles of research on ketogenic diet and adapted a formerly popular diet/exercise plan called the "Ultimate Diet" to reflect some newer research. Reading it all the way through can get somewhat heavy in the technical stuff, but he does put things in a way that you can understand how and why fat burning happens and how the diet plays into that. I'd be happy to help anyone answer questions they have if they want the book and get stopped up in some of the jargon

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 02:00 AM) If you're a pro prospect you'd make all-conference in the Chicago area. I can promise that. Haha well...I've seen otherwise even down here in the boonies
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 18, 2012 -> 06:46 AM) So he's Brent Morel. I'm not convinced that Brent is elite defensively. When he was healthy I felt like it was something more along the lines of "above average" If we're going to trade for someone who is a good glove maybe no bat third baseman, I want his defense to be better than Morel's
-
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 03:58 PM) He wasn't even first-team all-conference. The poor kid thinks he is an actual pro prospect by some of those quotes. I don't know the first thing about this kid, but all-conference teams tend to be 50% BS

Motion looks a hair toned down from what I remember.

QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 08:34 PM) The only positive I can think of is this has to be Stewart's last stand right? right? I mean if he gets shelled that should show it's time for him to get sent down. If he goes 5 and gives up like 2-3 runs and the Sox can score then that's great.... Unless he pitches out of his mind/Danks is never healthy again, he's probably the odd man out regardless

QUOTE (Baron @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 06:05 PM) Matt Thornton is a bad pitcher. Matt Thornton gave up two soft liners to left field

If it was 3 righties batting in the 9th I look at it completely differently.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 05:43 PM) You also have to love the high fastball pitch selection to Rivera there in a sac fly spot. You can thank Mark Parent for that

QUOTE (Baron @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 05:43 PM) Especially when our closer is so god awful That's a stretch

Quintana should have gotten at least 1 hitter. Matchups and bad luck got Reed here.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 03:04 PM) Yes, you have been suggesting he move to a starting role for quite some time. Being thrown into the fire like this may not be ideal, but hopefully he capitalizes. The team he's facing is something like a good AAA team
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 17, 2012 -> 02:43 PM) I, unlike most, actually think Zach can succeed as a MLB starter. So I am not disappointed with the notion at all. It's pretty clear pushing him into the mop-up role is not one he is going to flourish in right now, so try him in a different role. If he fails at that, then they can put him in Charlotte as a starter. I think Kenny reads my posts. I was suggesting Zach start in the game thread last night.
