Paul Konerko: Mild Concussion
Bring up Johnson for the remaining time that PK is DL'd. If he does something crazy, find a spot for him on the bench.

I really liked Bane, my favorite villain. What a badass. I think the cool way the movie ends contributes to everybody walking out of there with a good taste in their mouth.

TV news is dead
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 09:42 PM) Nothing can be worse than Internet news. The blog, the vlogs, the complete lack of any f***ing standards combined with this smug "new media" pretentiousness makes it unbearable. TV news has a long way to go to be that bad. TV news hopes to beat out those sources of information on the internet. The very long term plan at my station was to be ready for a world that no longer watches TV whenever that time comes.

TV news is dead
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) Jake I saw that when it said 30k/week, LOL. Sign me up. Hahaha, that's more like Orlando Hudson's job (tough stuff)

Another shooting
The fact that it's potentially a hate crime makes it possibly a very enticing story. I suppose it is a valid question to ask whether our country cares if Sikhs and/or Muslims are the targets of hate crimes. I hope they care.

TV news is dead
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 09:13 PM) It would make you sick how much money those local talking head Ron Burgundy a$$holes make. Think of the goofiest weather dork or the bow tied human interest clown or the 50 year old hairpiece headlines reader. They're wiping their butts with $100 bills. The nighttime anchors and the weathermen make good money. Everyone else makes nothing, except the occasional very popular sports guy. Where I worked there were reporters that ended up working ~12 hour days and making about 30k/year. I was warned frequently that the job is not for those looking for money.

Approached by World Misson Society Members
I've found saying "I'm Catholic" to be a very good way to make those people go away. I'm not Catholic, but my friend told me to try it. It works very well. One time I told some Mormons that a Mormon murdered my parents. They just stared at me and I walked away pretending to be upset.

Chick-Fil-A and Homosexuality
QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 08:58 AM) Here is what I am personally doing. My girlfriend and I have been living together for three years. I am not getting married until gay couples have the same right. I believe any couple who allows the government to determine if they are married is agreeing with the government's definition of marriage. That is my protest. If you took out a marriage license and got married, aren't you agreeing with the government's position? Isn't it ironic to have people saying it is wrong *and* going out and participating by having the government ok their marriage? Kind of like crusading about illegal drug use while being an illegal drug user? Or wearing a wedding ring while saying the government's position is wrong. Very, very interesting position there. I like it.

Obamanation Re-election MegaThread
QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 02:19 PM) Every other candidate was insane, mentally disabled, or extremely hate-able. Romney was the best case scenario for Republicans. this QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 02:19 PM) You haven't answered my question. Which of the candidates opposing Romney in the primaries was even close to a reasonable contender? Romney was the weakest candidate...except for all the other pathetic candidates. this. I would have liked to see a good candidate come from the Republican Party, but I'm starting to think one doesn't exist. In a party where the primary campaigns bash "moderation" and "cooperation" I am skeptical of whether that voting base could choose anyone but a moron. Mitt is at least vanilla enough not to turn everybody off. As for Rick Perry, it felt like he was a dumb version of George W. Bush. That's not good. You need more than a "have a beer with him" appeal. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 08:37 PM) LOL Obama has no hope in hell of just about any Southern state and certainly not Utah. This will not be a Reagan-Mondale repeat. I'd be surprised if Obama's Electoral College margin is wider than 2008. I agree with that.

King Liriano and the Good Guys Wearing Red vs. Halos
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 07:40 PM) Really? I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I'm fairly new to the age where I can do things like this on my own accord and when I was younger my dad always felt that the game was easier to watch when you could see the pitches from behind the pitcher and you could feel the air conditioner blowing right on you. I got him to go today and it was great (other than hellacious sun/heat) and it was great father-son bonding time. I get the feeling this is one of those seasons where you want to see a game.

Coop: Sox going back to five man rotation
I got the feeling listening to that interview that to some extent Cooper was just saying his own plan and this wasn't necessarily official or fully fleshed out yet. There were some good nuggets though -- "Thornton is on pace for a career high in appearances, are there plans to reduce his workload?" "No! We're going for a pennant!"

Another shooting
A sikh activist twitter page is reporting that folks in the area saw a 9/11-related tattoo on the shooter, who was a white middle-aged male. Muslims in the area believe that Sikhs were not the intended target.

2012-2013 NFL Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 5, 2012 -> 06:08 PM) This is bizarre. Somewhere Dane Sanzenbacher is doing backflips. I have a feeling people are going to be leaving the league early being happy that their brain is intact in higher numbers as time goes on.

TV news is dead
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 11:24 PM) TV news broadcasts are normally broken down into blocks of different kinds of news. The big stories will always lead, that's called hard news, and then depending on the producer, they'll do a block of stories which are soft news. Those are normally personal stories which don't have great impact but they break up the newscasts from feeling like the world is ending all the time. TV news is doing alright. The transition to web-based news has put a damper on things, but overall, the quality isn't the same as it once was because of downsizing. Before, you'd have reporters, cameramen, editors and writers all to for one story. Now, the reporter has to do it all on their own. They get the scoop on the story and they have to drive out and shoot it all themselves. Then they come in, write the script, edit the video and present it on air. And most of the time, they're posting it to the web too. It's the "one-man band" and it sucks. What market have you worked in? I was in a market where we had a two man team Reporter + Photog. I'd hear crazyyyy stories about the perks of being in a Chicago-sized market. Agreed though, TV news is doing alright and is still pretty viable as people are still watching TV and their content still works on the web. The real fight is getting people to watch local news vs the CNN's of the world. Lots of people don't care about the dogs, you know? They don't even care about the random people getting shot. Something big has to happen in many cases...or they just leave the TV on after their favorite show

King Liriano and the Good Guys Wearing Red vs. Halos
Made it to the game today, the day before I head back to TN for school. First time I've seen the Sox win in person, it was a great time. Nobody can say I didn't support ol' Jerry's pocketbook!

TV news is dead
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 10:16 PM) People correctly I guess say newspapers are dead. What about TV news? I rarely watch TV newscasts, but on KC TV news just saw a news item. A dog ran away off the porch and was hit by a car and died. That's it. It was right smack dab in the middle of KC TV news. Now Kansas City may be a cowtown to some, but it is a pretty big city. For them to put that story on ... my gawd, TV news is dead. People watch stories like that. Seriously. It makes them love their pets more.

Chick-Fil-A and Homosexuality
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 09:21 PM) They denounce AQ in those regions all the time. Here and there and everywhere. They've actually been key in helping marginalize AQ in those areas after the 9/11 attacks. His statement was made in sarcasm. Right, but again this isn't popular media discourse because it is very uninteresting.

Chick-Fil-A and Homosexuality
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 4, 2012 -> 06:34 PM) Why don't those so-called moderate muslims denounce Al Q in the media?! Who wants to hear that? They'd have to have a reason to be heard. Others are less likely to draw attention to themselves if they are in a region where Al Q may very well be able to eliminate them.

Part of me wants to have an assault rifle, but I feel like the main appeal is that it is so powerful that I shouldn't be able to have it.

Shooting in CO at Batman premiere
When my poor health makes someone money, I don't want capitalism to be the system that regulates healthcare. When insurance companies can charge as much as they want because I need to have health insurance, I'd rather have a system that won't have the incentive to do that. The government may not be the best entity ever, but they don't have much of an interest in having me dead. No more than an insurance company. I'd rather healthcare be less profit driven, not more. On the other issue, crazy people will kill. It's just something that will happen and not much can be done about it. Just try to make the world a good enough place that perhaps people with a predisposition for that kind of thing won't get triggered. For as all-powerful as the government is supposed to be, they don't have the ability or resources to keep illegal items out of people's hands. I don't see guns being any different, so they may as well be legal with a few due restrictions. I feel the same way about weed, steroids, and a few other things.
