QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 05:44 PM) One of the CBS writers today, tweeted that White Sox will be looking for veteran bullpen help around deadline. With that said, I think they take a pitcher that can fast track to the bullpen this year and start in minors next year. so...Stroman

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 05:03 PM) So, final predictions for first pick by Sox? I'm going with Stratton Going with my heart, Stroman Will be very disappointed with Heaney, I like what I hear about Stratton but half the good things had never been seen before this year so I wonder if they will last (sinking fastball, secondary pitch, starting pitcher)

Best place to track this if I don't have MLB Network? What time does it start? Yes, lazy

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 04:17 PM) Giolito would go against everything they believe in, it would seem (high school pitchers, injury risks) Yeah I realize that. However, I think we should be open to rethinking our draft philosophy. This guy is a Verlander-ish talent and is 17 years old, might not be the worst player to take the plunge with. Certainly would make sense to not draft him as well, though --- I'll be pissed if it's for one of these low ceiling college guys or a high strikeout, raw athlete position player.
-
If we draft a position player, I just ask that it's a player that doesn't project to strike out once per game. Stroman is my favorite, but Giolito would be VERY interesting...it'd be hard to blame them for it. I know his mother and they're a great family, not trying to cheat anyone out of their investment.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) We just saw a no hitter* the other night in MLB. I still have sour grapes over the UNC - Illini National Championship officiating

Giolito, Stroman, or bust Please say no to Heaney, Smoral, Stratton

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 11:17 PM) That's exactly right. Old for old expensive for expensive. That's all I would give up take it or leave it. That's my thinking. I don't want to give them a young guy and I don't want to take on that whole Youk contract without sending a pricey vet their way.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 11:06 PM) I know some of us were clamoring for Stetson Allie in 2010, I might have been one of them but I don't remember. Anyhow, after not being able to find the plate whatsoever as a pitcher, he's now been converted to a position player. His only game action this year was in A ball where walked 8 batters and only recorded two outs. Interesting turn of events. http://triblive.com/sports/pirates/1909481...ngton-kovacevic I played against Stetson and saw him pitch a handful of times in person...always caught him on the losing end. Seemed like just an astronomical amount of wild pitches. Too bad for him, but it seemed like this was likely from the get-go.

We just don't have a good track record with these no-contact athlete guys. Chris Young is as close as it gets, and strikeouts are STILL a big problem for him. We just haven't shown an ability to fix these guys with strikeout issues, and that might just be because that is very hard to fix.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 08:59 PM) If he's back to legit prospect status don't we want him playing everyday? I've been saying this for a while now. He keeps playing until September/an OF gets hurt on the Sox.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 10:50 PM) You just know Miami is winning that one unless both LeBron and Wade s*** the bed. Home teams always win, especially pivotal game 5s. Count on every close call going the Heat's way. You can always count on this. They toss in some token ones for the Celtics so it doesn't look entirely like an inside job.

The reason you can't think of many short starting pitchers is because most short guys can't throw hard. The chance that a guy who is short happens to have good enough velocity to dominate plus good off speed pitches to make him a starter is rare. Stroman is a finished product, his height is irrelevant because he already has the stuff. He doesn't have to get better, talent-wise. He has all the velocity, etc. that you need. He just has to polish like any successful college pitcher would. The height doesn't matter. He has a very developed body, so I think he is less of a durability risk than a Sale type of player. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 08:52 PM) Courtney Hawkins is so much a Kenny Williams type player. Very toolsy, prodigious power potential, but quite raw with contact issues. I imagine Kenny salivating at the possibility he drops to 13. No more contact-challenged prospects!

You just pitch them. Danks and Floyd have very, very good track records and I just don't see a reason to believe they're going to fall apart. ptatc has made me feel assured that this Danks issue probably momentary, injury-wise. Humber is more of a toss up due to his lack of track record...but I think something odd has happened recently. He's never been a pitcher that has walked guys, and that's been his issue. I'll be more worried when he's getting beaten at his own kind of game. Teams with sure things end up finding out they are not sure things...look at the Phillies. People get hurt and stuff. You just never know.

I think Gavin is just inconsistent mechanically. This means when he is off, it is not easy for him to just "recalibrate" and start throwing like he wants. This might make him seem nut-less, but he's just streaky...there's lots of pitchers like this. I'd say we don't know much about him as a big game pitcher because there haven't been a great deal of big games since he's been here.

Sale back to the rotation per KW, MRI comes back clean

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) Well taking a year off of having a heavy workload makes a big difference. I almost wonder if this is a plus, not a negative. Last year might amount to something like active rest. I remember hearing Smoltz talking about how the reason he gained velocity post-surgery was not the surgery, but the first extended layoff in a decade. Might be something to it. -

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 06:32 PM) Just sharing what I was told. I appreciate sharing! QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 06:34 PM) Lost in all of the hype with the current hot streak is really how bad Floyd has been. Let's hope he gets it turned around. I wonder what kind of offers KW turned down for Floyd in the offseason. Let's just keep in mind all these teams that have hit Gavin hard lately are VERY left handed lineups. Not to say a starter should get off not getting opposite handed hitters out, but it is stacking the deck against him.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 07:08 PM) http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3932561.story Not a lot of names I like there.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 3, 2012 -> 06:52 PM) Maybe the Sox will take Stroman because they might need him in September. If we had another 1st rounder get up within 12 months of his drafting, that'd be crazy. Probably not even a good thing, lol

I like Stratton and I like Stroman even more. I like what I hear about Stratton but it seems that a lot of his stuff "Just" appeared...making me wonder how long it will last. Stroman has some great stuff and if it's just the height holding him back, well f*** that. He already has the stuff that height projects a pitcher to get. The scouting reports on Stroman lead you to believe he could be in the bigs relieving right now. Has the stuff to be a dominant SP I don't mind the theory of high upside HS players...but I've had about enough of the athletic high strikeout players at this point. I'd like to see us get a guy who at least doesn't project to strikeout 150 times per year.

I wouldn't call Danks up to sit on the bench. Wait for an injury, if it happens, and you may find a diamond in the rough with Jordan Danks. I'm not sold that he can't be an MLB starter.
-
Missed the game today. Why was Kosuke pulled?
-
I'm not a fan of taking the bat out of Jordan Danks' hands when he was finally hitting his stride. He's not too old to be a prospect, might as well let him hit the rest of the season down in AAA

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 2, 2012 -> 08:24 PM) The delay could have been waiting for the pinch runner to be ready. Hopefully Morel is OK . Perhaps they see enough to conclude he's healthy and he's coming back to Chicago. The ODog needs a break. I feel like this is probably it
