  1. The Cubs heavily backloaded the contracts they gave out this offseason. They're pretty screwed in a few years.
  2. QUOTE(shoota @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 05:28 PM) If Guillen wants to emulate his marlins team, he should demote himself to third-base coach. Lol... oh, that's bad. I think someone should plant a bundle of unsent love letters to Lisa Dergan in Erstad's locker. I don't think anything bad could come of it.
  3. QUOTE(Reddy @ Mar 16, 2007 -> 03:57 PM) grinder talk again... Is someone willing to keep a Soxtalk running count of how many times Hawk uses the word "grinder" during the year? I'd put the over/under at 1,620.
  4. Billy Butler tears up the minors leaving the Royals with a logjam in the outfield. KW continues his recent history with the Royals and acquires David DeJesus.
  5. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?i...4&sport=mlb Says the only remaining sticking point is a no-trade clause to 9 NL and AL West teams.
  6. Here's how the Sox prospects stack up in the Rotoworld top 150. Sweeney - 23 Danks - 36 Fields - 39 Gonzalez - 78 Haeger - 81 Masset - 109 Broadway - 137 Surprisingly, the Sox (7) trail only the Devil Rays (11) and the Rockies (8) in number of prospects in their top 150. We're tied with the D'backs, Yanks, and Twins. Of course, that doesn't say anything about the comparative quality of those 'spects. For all those lamentors, Chris Young is #5. FWIW- Brian Anderson was ranked #30 last year. link: http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/...articleid=27859
  7. Rotoworld: Good luck with that contract. Although I really wanted Young, at that price, he's not worth it.
  8. http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp...sdate=2/27/2007 More names coming? EDIT: Jeez, I misspelled MatThews' name in the description. Can someone fix that?
  9. I can't do the 23rd or 25th. Any of the other days look ok with the 30th and 31st the best dates for my schedule. I'd prefer H2H. I like the standard 5X5, but I'll go with the majority.
  10. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 01:35 PM) Except the reason Ichiro would leave the M's is to play for a winner. There was a recent article where he said that even if the M's offered him a billion dollar contract, he'd have to think it over. I'm pretty sure he wants to win. I'd wouldn't give Dye more than 3 years with a mutual option for a 4th. I'd do something around $10-11M per year. I think KW is waiting because right now the market would probably have him at least at $14M per year, and he probably wants to see if he can produce similar numbers to last year. Hopefully there is a slight market correction next year to bring his value down to the $12M per year range and from there, maybe he'd give us a $1-2M per year discount to stay here.
  11. I don't know if the FO would be willing to give JS as many years as other teams would... Miggy's the stuff of dreams, but a lot would have to happen for him to become a FA. If the Marlins get a stadium contract, MC gets signed longterm. If they don't get a stadium contract, he gets traded the July before he's a FA and is then signed longterm by his new team. The only logical situation where MC would become a FA would be if the Marlins didn't get a new stadium and were fighting for a playoff spot the year of his impending free agency. I can still dream though...
  12. So can this story go hand-in-hand with the story about KW putting the scouts on alert? We still get picks for losing FAs, yes? (Not sure if the CB changed anything) Maybe he wants them ready to make some extra picks...
  13. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 09:52 PM) Listen, I think Rosenthal makes a valid point about the low asking price and Freddy's motivation in a contract year. But you have to give Kenny the benefit of the doubt. In '05 no one thought we got enough for Carlos Lee. No one thought the signings of AJ or Dye meant much of anything. Guys like Jenks and Thornton were pretty much discarded by their old teams. Somehow Kenny saw something in these guys. His track record speaks for itself over the past two years. I don't mean to sound like a Ken Williams apologist, but he absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt. And it'll be a few years before we can truly evaluate this deal, because it'll depend on what Gio does, if anything, in the majors. KW also took the money saved from CLee and spent it on other holes in the roster. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 10:43 PM) The point really isn't if this deal turns out good for us 5 years down the road. The point in question is whether we could have gotten more. Trades shouldnt just be evaluated by long term effect, but whether or not true value was met at the time of the trade.
  14. 1. H2H 2. 5 years 3. doesn't matter, league 3 last year 4. nah
  15. Scout.com http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=315&p=2&c=601667 Penny has the right to demand a trade a year after he's traded to another team. If he remained healthy, he'd probably try to rework his contract.
  16. They think Lind can produce. They think they really, really need another starter. Doesn't seem wise to trade Rios, but who am I to argue?
  17. Olney mentions potential trades in his article. He seems to think Brad Penny, Joe Blanton, or a package of prospects from the Mets would be an equal package. Some other article mentioned that the Jays are looking for merely a 3rd or 4th starter in return for Rios. I don't think it would require BMac, but it would require one of our other starters, which is probably equally impossible at this point.
  18. Roto: Nabbing Rios would make this offseason complete. I don't think we can afford to give up the necessary parts though.
  19. That makes no sense. Why would we have to wait to clear salary cap space to make a deal for Arod? If we were going to acquire him, we could have done so and traded a pitcher later (if one wasn't already included in the deal). Unless we were including Floyd or Gio in the trade... but c'mon, is that really what the Yanks are looking for?
  20. This trade is asinine. I am in utter disbelief. My father calls me up at 11:30. I'm thinking, what could he possibly want at this hour. He asks, "Who the hell are these two nothings the Sox traded Garcia for??" This trade is ridiculous no matter how you spin it. EVEN IF we somehow spin one or both of these guys off for Baldelli or whoever or sign Bonds (:shudder:), that still doesn't justify the trade! If you can get more, then you damned well go and get more! Castro, Madson, another top prospect, anything! Sheffield lands NY that sweetass package, and this is all we could muster?? I can't believe we just made Pat Gillick look smart.
  21. M's lose. Why would they do this? They must be pretty desperate after failing to sign Schmidt. What kind of crap can we throw them for Putz?
  22. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 02:00 PM) You mean Morse? This is how rumors get started. People throw around names, and other people see those names, and those said people start talking. Morse got caught in the Seattle system, right? I thought Olivo was caught doing something illegal in our system. I could definitely be mistaken. I certainly don't intend to start any nasty rumors.
  23. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:55 PM) Careful...Nothing is proven... If you've followed the situation closely, there is no dispute that Barry used (read: abused) PEDs. The only question is if he was doing so consciously instead of being "tricked."
  24. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:54 PM) IIRC, the Carlos Vasquez guy the Sox acquired in the Cotts deal was suspended for testing positive. Kenny Williams must be associated with the devil for acquiring a known 'roid user. Forgiveness, it seems, is the better part of valor. I'm not familiar with the Vasquez situation, but I suppose life's about second chances. IIRC, Olivo was caught using at some point in our system, too? Anyway, I'm pretty sure Barry's used up his 9 strikes.
  25. I don't really care about the numbers. It's about integrity. I don't want any known roiders on my team. I want to win, but I don't want to stoop to the lowest common denominator to do so despite the fact that actual usage of PEDs is probably rampant. I'd like to think the Sox are above that sort of thinking.
