Scott Podsednik Re-Signs with White Sox
shawnhillegas replied to Colorado Sox Fan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(rcpweiner @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 02:30 PM) I'm still trying to figure out exactly what McCarthy has done in his career for people to think he's untouchable ... $ -
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 11:16 PM) Really, given how Ozzie apparently feels about McCarthy: and his obvious dislike for Anderson, I wonder if the Sox wouldn't be better off trading them both. I know it's foolish to trade young major league pitching, and trading Anderson now would be selling low. But given who the manager is, and his obvious disdain for both players...maybe the Sox would better off doing it. BA, McCarthy, MacDougal, and Broadway might be enough for the DRays to trade Carl Crawford. Honestly, given KWs history of making big trades, his repeated public stance that McCarthy is untouchable, I wonder if he's just driving up the price. Disdain is a pretty strong word....and that is a lot to give up for Crawford. I know thats probably what it would take to get Crawford, but our bullpen cant start the season with only two established arms and I cant even imagine what our rotation would look like in 2008 if we did that trade and kept Garcia. Vazquez Count (who may be 45 by 2008) Garland Haeger Heath Phillips? re-sign El Duque? bid 80 million to talk to someone? no thanks.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 09:12 PM) Err, I said that. I said, if we can get some good youthful pitching in a trade, then do it, but if we can't get something good then keep the five. i agree.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 1, 2006 -> 05:29 PM) Why does he deserve it? Because he had a handful of good-to-great outings for us in late 2005? I don't think that on merits he's especially better than any of our guys. You are approaching this like its an even split, but its absolutely not. Its not BMAC in the rotation, or BMAC in AAA. Its BMAC in AAA without trading a SP or its BMAC in the rotation with new assets on the team via the trade. So.....BMAC in the rotation + return from trading one of the starters > the traded starter.
-
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 30, 2006 -> 09:16 PM) Is this actually a question? Do I want AAAA slugger or a GG defensive CF with a solid bat in his rookie year? Tough question... You can say Anderson was competent or mediocre or good-enough-for-a-rookie, but you cannot say he was solid with the bat. Seriously.

Sox & Angels Talking; Crede/Garcia for Santana/Figgins

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Nov 29, 2006 -> 10:31 PM) Figgins and Pods on the same team? Time to find a barf bag. but there would be so many opportunities to see Pods walk, get thrown out stealing, and then see Chone K. Or if Pods still led off, we could see Chone single, steal second and third, and Pods take strike three looking. -

the interesting thing about Crawford is that I just dont think that are a whole lot of teams really pursuing him right now. Teams like the Angels need power bats, not another speedster, and the Red Sox either a) dont have room or B) need a productive power hitter to replace Manny and protect Ortiz (JD Drew will not do.) The Yankees have an outfield, the Dodges have Pierre.....I'm sure there are plenty of teams willing to make an offer, but the need this offseason seems to be for power bats, not Crawford types. All this just makes me think that a deal for Crawford is a moderate possibility. I have no idea how that stupid smiley thing got in there -

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Nov 29, 2006 -> 03:30 PM) The Crede, Garcia for Figgins and Santana rumor must be pretty legit since it is posted on the MLB website: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...6&fext=.jsp As far as Seattle being interested in re-aqcuirering Freddy... Sorry!! You have nothing we want. Unless you are willing to trade King Felix or Ichiru just dont even pick up the phone. It looks like more and more teams are going after Freddy. This can only increase our return package.... I say the Angel-Sox trade happens right before the winter meetings as a nice orderve before he heats up the hot stove and makes our team even stronger. Example: 1. White Sox aqcuire Figgins and Santana + one of their relievers (Shields or Donnelly) from LA Angels for Crede and Garcia. 2. White Sox aqcuire Crawford from Tampa Bay for McCarthy and a top prospect. If this happens which i think it could, KW should officially become the Mayor of Chicago. Can you guys imagine a lineup like this: Figgins 3B Crawford CF (trade BA to Florida for pitching prospects) Dye RF Thome DH Konerko 1B Iguchi 2B Pierzynski C Uribe SS Podsednick LF call me crazy, but he would make a great 9th place hitter, not to mention provide an awesome 9,1,2 speedy punch with him, figgins and crawford. Think about it you would have 3 guys who can all possibly steal 50+ bases. Isn't that would Ozzie is looking for?!? Yea our defense wouldn't be as sharp, but our run production will go up tremendously. As for as the pitching rotation it would be: Buerhle, Garland, Contreras, Santana and Vazquez which is still a very very good rotation! Bullpen: Jenks, Thorton, MacDougle, Shields or Donnelly, Aardsma, Haegar. JUST DO IT KW!!! There is no way in a trillion years that the Sox get Santana, Figgins and Shields for Crede and Garcia. But it would be nice.... -

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 29, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) Ozzie doesn't want to give up the home run hitting power, but he also wants this team to be able to produce when the middle of the order isn't hitting home runs. That's why I think Figgins would be a good pickup, because, outside of last year, he's a .350 OBP guy but you know what he can do that no one else on the Sox can do? BUNT! If he's given the chance to play every day, in one position, as the leadoff guy, I could see him being much better than Pods. I dont think that there is any question that he would be substantially better than Pods. The worst he can do is hit like Pods, but actually steal bases at an acceptable rate. Thats still a significant upgrade. And we wont even discuss fielding abilities. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 29, 2006 -> 01:40 PM) If the team of 2006 played the season 10 times, would last season's results have been the worst that can happen? The pitching underperformed, the bullpen got shot to hell, and the hitting was sporatic. If we make minimal changes including a new LF and trading one of our starters for spects of pen help, I would feel pretty good about this team going into next year. Its not about the White Sox as a team, its about other teams. Did the Tigers overperform last year? Yes. But they are going to be a very good team next year. They added Sheffield, and their bullpen and SPing is extraordinarily deep. That doesnt include other teams like the Angels and Red Sox who figure to be upgraded as well. And saying that the hitting was sporadic is misleading. We suffered no serious injuries last year and had career years from a number of our hitters. Our ability to produce runs might (and better) improve next year, but do we know that Thome, Dye or Crede (and his back) dont regress just a little? There were a lot of career years out there, only Pods, Anderson and Uribe really struggled and no one is expecting a huge jump in the production of any of those three. -

QUOTE(beautox @ Nov 29, 2006 -> 11:15 AM) It was a joke Heath Phillips, Chris Stewart, Jeff Farnsworth, Robert Valido, Jorge Velandia and Booooone for Ichiro? If we are giving them 6 and they are giving us 1 it has to be a good deal! -

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 11:02 PM) OK, here's what the Sox do: KW trades Garcia and Crede to the Angels for Figgins and Santana. Then he flips Santana along with Fields and Anderson to the Marlins for Miguel Cabrera. Figgins in Left, Sweeney in Center and Dye in Right along with Cabrera at Third, Uribe at Short, Iguchi at Second and Konerko at First. Pierzynski Catches and Thome at DH. McCarthy moves into the rotation. Sox get faster, younger, cheaper and arguably better. do you really think a different team couldnt put together a MUCH better option for Cabrera if he was available??? The Angels need a 3baseman, so why wouldnt they offer Santana and Shields or Santana Wood and Kendrick? Cabrera is not going anywhere, and that trade would not even come close to prying him away. -

QUOTE(soxpride77 @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 05:13 PM) Why do you refer back to 2005 when you talk about Figgins and Podsednik, what does that have to do with anything? At least compare their stats from last year if you are going to compare stats. We already won our first WS trophy in 89 years with Crede, and it's a virtual certainty that we will not want to resign him at the price he is going to command. Notice I said we will not WANT, not we will not be ABLE to sign him. So, why not trade Crede for value now with 2 years left on his contract, instead of a year from now when most teams will view him as a 1 year rental. right on. -

QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 03:03 PM) I wonder what it would take from our side to make this happen? I wonder if they would consider dealing Santana/Aybar rarther than Figgins? Or if something such as Crede/Garcia/Phillips for Santana/Figgins? If you think that Heath Phillips is going to be the epiphany in this deal, you are smoking some cheeba. He has noooooo trade value. -

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 02:01 PM) For all of the lets just keep crede people. Tell Crede to do the following and he will be safe from trade. 1.) Fire Scott Boras as his agent. The most important and will start the rest of the chips to fall. 2.) Sign a fair, but not rich long term deal. 3.) Agree to minor recommended back surgery. Remember as much as Joe has given us lip services about how he would never let his agent get in the way, he already is. The Whitesox want him to get some surgery on his back, he doesnt want to on the recommendation of his agent. He could sign a deal, however his agent wants to burn his arbitration years and get his man to jackpotland. You can either negotiate a fair deal, like Kong did where he chose less money and less years to be here. Or you can sign Boras as your agent and decide that you want to buy have the state of Missouri. Joe will be a very very rich man, and his family will never have a want in the world. I cant blame him, but lets stop acting as a group that KW is either trying to be cheap, or is being foolish. KW is a pretty smart GM. the whitesox would violate the CBA and a whole lot of labor laws if they told joe crede to fire his agent or else..... -

QUOTE(daa84 @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 12:47 PM) theres almost no doubt in my mind that if this trade goes through...theres another deal on the horizon...maybe its buerhle +broadway for arod or mccarthy for crawford....but if this deal happens we still have 6 starting pitchers, and if deal buerhle, we have 5 starters all locked up for 2-3 years ok now, seriously, Arod is not being traded, and if he was going to be traded, it would take a whole hell of a lot more than one year of Buerhle and a 2nd tier pitching prospect with a 90 mph fastball. -

QUOTE(VAfan @ Nov 28, 2006 -> 11:27 AM) Shouldn't this read Crede OR Garcia for Santana AND Figgins? This is a preposterous rumor. Everyone mentions Ervin Santana's name, but I don't salivate over him. 4.28 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. That ranked him 43rd in baseball last year. Figgins is worthless. Crede can't walk for another couple of years. We need his production for the time being. I wouldn't trade him until Josh Fields is ready to take over, if that's what it comes to. Its simply impossible for people on this board to look at these things objectively. Figgins worthless??? Give me a f***ing break. He stole 50 bases last year, and while is average and OBP are not very good, he is absolutely a better option in left than Pods. What is your suggestion for LF? Ervin Santana is 23, and I remember everyone on this board laughing at the Orioles for turning down a Tejada deal that involved Santana, many saying that the Orioles should have taken the deal straight up. He has better stuff than anyone on our staff (perhaps with the exception of a healthy Jose) and hes signed for a long time....but all this has been said before. Someone should really pull up all the complaints about Freddy lodged during the year, so that people can realize hes really not THAT valuable. He's signed for one year, Crede is signed for two, and we are going to get NO return on either if we keep them, and clubs know that. Lets not forget that Kenny made it somewhat clear that we cant resign Joe, so teams realize that we either move him or lose him for nothing. Up next is the talk about how clubs really want Heath Philips... Would we really rather have Vazquez for some Mets or Rangers arms, or lose Crede and Garcia and gain Crawford and Figgins. That seems to be the real issue here if all this speculation is correct. And I prefer the second option. -
I see Joe Crede as being part of this deal.... Crede and Freddy for Ervin and some serious prospects? Otherwise I just cant fathom a Santana for Freddy straight up deal; they must want Fields or Anderson as well.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) Umm....one of the best pitchers in baseball when he's on the mound. Ya, I'm all over that. Plus its just a one year deal and financially there are so many rewards to signing him (all the national exposure....the jersey sales...would help make it almost a lock for 3 million in attendance, barring a complete collapse by the Sox). The rotation needs help, if you could move someone like Garcia or Buehrle (who are likely gone in a year) and than sign someone like Clemens to 1 year (yes for more money but its just a year) all while getting two top prosspects (in Buehrle's case I say three) that can help position you for the future. Basically the way I see it you replace the guy you trade all while getting a couple top prospects that will help ya a year down the road. Not that I think Clemens will come...although we could have had him instead of Navarro. Roger is too old and rickety to make it through the season. IF things do go well next year, do you really think he will be throwing in 30 degree Chicago weather in October with that hammy? Not a chance in hell. He is worth a lot of sellouts, but he wont be around if we make it deep in the postseason.
