  1. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) Are we desperately trying to trade this guy for a bag of balls or what? Why does Nomo keep getting starts over our actual starters? My thought is no reason to let KC see Jon an extra time when it's not necesary. Just get his work in the minors. Nomo is just someone that can go out there and take up the spring start.
  2. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 01:33 PM) Vizcaino had 5 losses last season so it's fairly apparent that Thornton could have the same impact on our record, especially since he will be in the same role as Vizcaino. Thornton is much worse than Vizcaino so he will probably hurt us even more than 5 losses. Well. Ozzie used Viz more in setup situations early on. Thornton's role will be more like what Viz did in September. If it's apparent that Thornton can't get it done by blowing a game or two in APril (though I don't think he'll be in the game hardly at all with a lead) then he'll likely be shipped out. If it's obvious that Thornton will do way worse than Viz and cost us more than 5 or 6 games, then Ozzie and KW will ship him out. I'd rather go with Lopez and Logan, but KW wants to try it out. We'll see.
  3. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) You keep saying this about Thornton but Vizcaino was our mop-up guy last season, right? Didn't Vizcaino see a few important innings last season? A few. But not too many. I'll go take a look and see what it was in the first month or two. In the first month it looks like he was in a couple extra inning games. A couple in which the start (usually Duque) didn't go very deep. Down the stretch in Sept, which would be most relevant I supposed because that is what the roles will be like this year. He had 10 appearence. 6 were blowouts and 2 were the Cleveland series. I mean, Thornton will see an important game or two in teh first month, but if he sucks I don't think he'll cost us enough games for it to matter.
  4. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) Thornton reminds me of Kyle Farnsworth only left handed...great arm but no control....I can't see the Sox really relying on him unless Coop can work some serious magic with him. Well, they aren't really going to rely on him all that much. He gets the mop up duty. He'll only pitch in important games when everybody in the pen is used up, or a starter just got rocked, which hopefully won't be that often. I guess KW's thinking is that they can work with him in those mop up jobs early on until he gets with the program, if he gets with the program. If he doesn't I'm sure he'll be gone. I just can't imagine that he will be in more than 1 or 2 important situations in the first month though.
  5. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Mar 26, 2006 -> 09:28 AM) KW, time to work the phones. We need pen help. Do your thing. KW isn't going to trade until we're in to the season. He is pretty set on trying out Thornton, and there are two good options in Lopez and Logan for the LOOGY role, so as KW sees it, we are "good" to go until he see we need to change something in the regular season.
  6. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 04:28 PM) LOL, pathetic. I'm onboard with quickman boat. Trade all of our minor leaguers. Hehe. This was just an invitee though. Not a system guy. LOL. Seriously. NOW they should just call the game.
  7. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 04:28 PM) Well, if you consider this pitching...yes. LOL. He gone. He was gone before this game though.
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) That's why we're not General Managers. You can't get caught up on what they did for you last season. You need to take into account where they're at in their age, what position they plug for you, and how their salary effects your team. I'm happy we still have Contreras, but I think the organization would be greatly disappointed if he had 13 wins with a 4.5 ERA this yr. I think everybody would be really dissapointed if that happened. I also don't believe there is a very good chance that that will happen.
  9. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 04:03 PM) Nope, he's done. The old Jose is back and here to stay. Yep. I'm sure he was tenative. First time pitching from that angle since his last castuc start and first time pitching in a game at all since then. I actually figured he'd have more walks than that. But he went out and looked better the last two according to Hawk and struck out 4 in his last 2 IP.
  10. QUOTE(Felix @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) I think he'll be fine too... depending on how you define "fine". I'm looking for a mid-4's ERA out of him, and 13-15 wins. For Contreras, I think thats fine, but others might disagree. Mid 4's ERA? I'll have to tag this post for the end of the season.
  11. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 03:45 PM) Pardon me if I'm not celebrating his 4BB in 4IP It was the first time he pitched in a game like 2+ weeks. WTF did you expect? The important part was there was no pain so they didn't have to shut him down in the middle of the outing.
  12. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 03:39 PM) Garland is pitching tomorrow. Hopefully he'll do better than his last outing when he was just abused. He's pitching in the minor league game I believe.
  13. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 03:36 PM) Don't tell jphat007 that. Why? We knew they were going to pitch him a bucnh today. They said that the otehr day. That doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know.
  14. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 03:35 PM) If Jenks is pitching 3 innnings (48 pitches) in AA games, they are worried about his conditioning and arm strength. THey said they were going to try and pitch him in as many innings as he thought he could go today. Get that pitch count up a little. Good to hear JOse got all of his work in too.
  15. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 03:17 PM) What about Thome? He's looked great this spring. They just didn't want him to go on the road. This way for three straight days he can lead off every inning and get a ton of ABs.
  16. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:55 PM) I hope so. Not sure you can just assume that, especially in Jenks' case. He said he'll be ready so I'm assuming that he'll be ready utnil I see him look like crap in a game that matters. It's not like it matters though. What I think isn't going to change anything. So instead of worrying about it, I'll just assume they'll be ready. BUt that's 1 out of 25. The fact that most of the rest of them look good at this point is encouraging.
  17. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:55 PM) May I ask what you've seen from either of them that would suggest they'll be "ready to go?" Iguchi has looked much better at the plate since he dropped the new experiment with the new swing. Not anything amazing but I think he's hitting in the .260s-.270s since then. Plus he's back in the two hole. As for Jenks I'm assuming he'll turn it on the final week or so. He might not. But even if they arne't ready to go we have enough options to be ready for a week or so. Everybody else looks good.
  18. Looks like almost all of the regulars, pitching and hitting, are ready to go except for Iguchi and Jenks, and both should be good to go in a week. It's very nice to see.
  19. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:30 PM) I know Cotts is supposed to pitch today. Not sure about Jenks though. He is, in the minor league game.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) Yep, can we just pull all the starters off the field to make sure no one gets injured. Now, we're going to have to listen to 4 hours worth of Hawk and DJ explaining why spring training records don't matter (which I agree, but they still go overboard). Why would we pull the players? They aren't out there to win. THey are out there to get their work in. Get some ABs. Not try to win ballgames.
  21. Only one more week til we don't have to see any more crappy pitchers and position players. They should televise the minor league games. That's where most of our good pitchers are pitching.
  22. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 04:57 PM) This debate is a matter of semantics... I consider Closer by Committee™ to be a club that doesn't necessarily have any viable closer options, i.e. 2003 Red Sox the Brandon Lyon experiment. The 2005 White Sox didn't fit this definition. Yes, Ozzie used different guys to close out games. But the thing he did best, was put the right guys in high-leverage situations. He didn't fall into the Closer-gets-the-last-three-outs-in-a-win trap. He used his best guys when they were needed most, sometimes that was in the ninth, sometimes it was the 8th. Perhaps most importantly, after his misuse of the pen in the third game of the season, he almost always had one bullet left in the chamber. Who would you describe as viable closer options as the ballclub is currently put together? Jenks, Politte, Cotts? just Jenks and Cotts?
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 04:52 PM) What the hell are you talking about? The closer-by-committee thing was the first negative thing I've said about our outlook all offseason. I could care less if you just responded to my posts with your 100 percent optimistic approach or else. However, you've been responding to everyone else's posts like they're completely wrong just because they mention a concern about something. LOL. Right. Not liked you jumped to conclusions on the injury outlook or anything. Anybody know if Pods will be back by the all star break?
