yeah i mean it's not like scarface was an original storyline...all the early 30's gangster movies had the same plot of glorifying it and then killing them just to show "crime doesn't pay"... unlike scarface, scarface, public enemy - city of god's violence was real and gritty. Not overly stylized and gawdy. ... my school throws a film festival (docs only) every year entitled True/False, and i went to go see "The Devil Rides on Horseback", a documentary about one man and his fight to end violence in darfur. He was a marine who ended after his four years and signed up to be a patrolman to oversee sudan's ceasefire, and then while there began to hear about darfur, relinked up with the marines and asked to be in darfur where he spent 6 months investigating the region. He saw all the death and murder, and unable to act he eventually left and when he came back to america started the fight to end the violence, and at the end, you see a different man, still inspired, but noticeably defeated in nothing being done. So many great interviews and moments. Very well done. I would encourage everyone to try and see it! Highlights: interview with english speaking darfur-refugee in chad where he praises america for their aid(charities with food and such) - very powerful - And when the marine has a forum discussing all the pictures he saw and why we need to intervene in darfur, and at the forum, three sudanese stand up and ridicule him, saying he's lying and that the evidence wasn't convincing enough. He says he thinks the sudan embassy planted them.

there were 2 really bad episodes in season 2 but i thought it was a lot better than people gave credit for in some of my friend circles. I was encouraged by the first 2 episodes after break but pissed off after the third. Am ready for sayid to just kick ass. Why can't sayid just kick ass every episode!??!!?

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 03:27 AM) Definitely keep checking back. In a worst case scenario, you can almost always get a room same day. Show up at a hotel between 5:30 and 6:00. Hotels almost always have unsecured reservations they will release at 6:00. Several years ago during Spring Training, there were no rooms available in Tucson. My buddy and I showed up at 5:45 and by 6:05 were booking a room for the night. There were three other people doing the same thing and they all got rooms too. It's inconvenient and not guaranteed (you may want to call the hotel and ask them that afternoon what your chances are), but for a last ditch effort it works. these are PM times then?

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 10:36 PM) At AtEaseWeb.com a question is proposed... Is The Arcade Fire better than Radiohead? OK Computer and Kid A, Radiohead is better. Funeral and Neon Bible tops everything else Radiohead has done though, I'd say. Anyone care to interject? Or agree? weird i used to post there !!! we spawned the yahtsee music forum from atease! I'd say radiohead are better, IMO, because i am a fan and 1)The Bends, OKC, and Kid A are all great albums 2) Arcade fire only have one great album 3) Radiohead has been around longer 4) radiohead was able to reach a wider audience. arcade fire would be better for : 1) their version of "chestnuts roasting"

i found the real reason, there are the state basketball championships, so i'm under the impression that hotels may be booked by people who think the teamsmay make it, so maybe next weekend some more will open up if i keep checking because hotwire was 150. I also found some in boonville, 23 miles west of here. Ugh that was stressful.
-
thank you, hotwire has the only availables. danke schön

yeah matt's wasn't great, he relied too much on the fact that he's from boston and i've stated every departed thread how mmuch i hate boston all the movies based in it. But i thought leo was great. I don't think it really mattered that we knew leo's past because he wasn't that person anymore, he was a thug now. I thought watching him of the line from daniel day lewis in the crucible (i'm aware this line should be credited elsewhere towards the writer...was it based off the arthur miller version?) when he says "because it's my name, it's all a man has!". The loss of identity was tearing at him and the drug use and anxiety must have been just insane.
-
I agree. I thought casino was too long and I really only enjoyed seeing pesci kicking ass on screen again. The departed held my attention much more, due in large part to jack nicholson.

did you see last king of scotland to really fight his winning of the oscar?

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 06:18 AM) are they still being touted? the Reader was constantly pushing them a couple years ago, i heard their cd and thought it totally sucked. all i've ever heard was labor days, and i love it. I can see his voice being annoying though. I'm not gonna really back them, just a cd i like to throw on. bobdylan, you make up some great points. I hate the chronic. snoop dogg is weak as s*** on lyrics and so is dre. I mean, i always liked wu-tang clan and tribe, just recently got into the genre more. Gza-liquid swords might be my fav. hip hop produced album. i don't know where i'm going with this, just that i think there's some real cool stuff in hip hop right now, and theres stuff that's just fun pop music to throw on. I don't really mind either, there's more teeth in the pop hip hop i listen to than the pop rock going on right now.

i think the only part of the departed i really hated was the whole "is she pregnant with his baby?" because it really was just kind of tacked on.

bravo scorsese

QUOTE(Brian @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 04:57 AM) Helen Mirren wins best actress. It seems a lot of actors/actress' are getting awards for playing someone who is/was real. I'd rather see more original performances to start winning. Philip Seymour Hoffman had to win. Jamie Fox did a good impression on Ray Charles. We have seen his other work and he isn't really that talented as an actor. I would be ok with lesser known portrayals of real people such as Theron in Monster. the task of impersonating one of the most visible figures of the 20th century is not an easy one. I haven't seen it but it appears she did it well.
