QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 15, 2006 -> 09:21 PM) I just always have a problem when a coach gets blamed after one of their best players gets injured. I mean its impossible to say what would have happened, but people need to give the coach a little rope. The biggest knock on Davis should be, Why was he unable to land Oden, etc? That is a major issue, the play of the team this year, thats more debatable. Davis' main problem is that he has no ability to adjust. The team played without White for the first seven games and were 5-2 with a win over Kentucky and a respectable showing against Duke. DJ only played in 5 games never playing more than 23 minutes in a game. The team is now playing worse than they have at any point this season, with or without DJ White. They completely tanked it at Minnesota. If Killingsworth is in foul trouble or just decides not to play hard (which has happened) then IU is toast. They have made no adjustments whatsoever. Injuries are part of college basketball. Mike Davis would probably be getting a break due to that injury if his teams were playing with effort and intensity. If they didn't look like they were out of shape, always tiring in the 2nd half. If they knew how to defend an out of bounds play... or score on one themselves. If you watch IU play, it isn't all about the wins and losses. And every time there is any criticism, Davis gets defensive and tries to build a wall between that criticism and "his" team. He is criticizing the fans. He makes excuses. He cannot unite a fan base but finds ways to divide it from his team. Unfortunately, Mike Davis has become his own worst enemy. He can recruit, but he still just misses on so many top players. It has become clear to me that Mike Davis was never ready for a head coaching job of this magnitude regardless of the situation before him. If you really think about it, how many players in his tenure have really become much better players while playing for him? I can't think of too many, if any. Mike is a class guy from every angle I have heard, but he is not capable of being the Head Coach at Indiana University. It's time for him to move on, injury to DJ White or not. I wish him well and could see him as a good fit as a top assistant at Alabama, if Mark Gottfried had any brains.

Should the NCAA 3 point line be moved back?
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 14, 2006 -> 07:42 PM) My vote goes to international. I think it's obvious the current 3 point distance (which is the same as junior high and high school) has outgrown the NCAA, and the line needs to be moved back. I think you start gradual, and move it back to FIBA distance, and people would be surprised how big a difference those extra 9 inches make. Also, you could always move it back further. The NBA line is 23'9", but in the corners is only 22' due to the proximity of the sidelines, so as time goes on, maybe the NCAA could move the line back again to where it is 22' all the way around. That would be the same as the NBA in the corners, but quite a bit shorter on the wings and straight on. I thought this would be an interesting discussion and that's my opinion, so what do you think? I would have no problem keeping it where it is or moving it back some. The NBA line is way too far back and I think the last thing college basketball needs to do is become more like the NBA. The only thing I would say is that if you move it, it has to stay. You can't ease it back. Moving it will immediately change how you can compare records from the past. You already have the current era vs the pre-3pt era. Consistency is very important. So if they move it, move it ONCE only.

Interesting perspective on IU today from the Louisville Courier-Journal: Coach should blame himself, not IU's fans The beginning...

This article really illustrates that Davis just does not get it. It's sad really that he isn't smart enough to understand, especially having played at Alabama where it is this bad (or worse) from football fans. More Whining from Davis An excerpt

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 14, 2006 -> 03:18 AM) Your side has yet to make one, but I am making my points anyway. I'll give you this much... There are definite strong points to the Villanova job and with Wright being from the Northeast, he may not have interest in Indiana. With the changes in teh Big East and Wright's recent success in recruiting, he has that program primed to stay strong for a long time. That said, he could own the state of Indiana. No matter how strong Villanova is, the program gets swallowed in Philly with much more to compete for. The 76ers, Eagles and even Temple and St. Joes all take coverage away from the Wildcats. I heard tonight they will begin playing on campus (next year, I think) which will be a big move for them. A successful coach at IU would have the program on the front page across the whole state, with only Notre Dame football even coming close to competing. The Colts even in their best year won't come close to overshadowing IU basketball. With the right coach, it could take less than 5 years (maybe 3) for this conversation to be laughable. That is how good of a job IU COULD be. I'm not taking anything away from Villanova, but there is really no comparison on the two jobs given the right situation. To some very competitive coach, that will mean a helluva lot.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 14, 2006 -> 02:55 AM) You could always, you know, rebutt my legitmate points. But I figured not, wouldn't expect that out an Indiana fan (and I find it ironic that an Indiana fan of all people would tell somebody to go back into their hole). Perhaps we are still waiting for legitimate points?

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 09:45 PM) Ahh vaguely. That 1993-1995 era is when I first really was getting into sports (age 7-9) but I don't have a full memory of everything. I've been hooked on college football since the Colorado/Michigan hail mary game in 1994 and I remember being glad that Arkansas beat Duke to win the NCAA title. Ah, back in my gambling days... That stupid hail mary pass by Kordell Stewart took me from winning $50 to losing $55 in a matter of seconds. I cleaned up in the NCAA Tournament that year, winning several times betting Arkansas, including said Duke game.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 09:38 PM) I honestly don't care. Making the tournament doesn't do much good. We have higher expectations than that. Making the tournament is not a goal, it should be expected with our history. Hence, Mike Davis is sitting on a seat of fire. Maybe IU can win the NIT by beating Kentucky in the Championship Game. Beating UK twice in one season would be some consolation.

I still say we will see multiple teams tied for the Big Ten Championship at 11-5. The Illini are not out of it yet.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 12, 2006 -> 06:07 PM) As of today here's how the valley's rpi looks: UNI-19, Shockers-22, Dawgs-23, Mo State-24, Bj's-29. Assuming none of those teams fall on their face, the Valley this year could certainly test the committee's claim that they never look at how many teams come from each conference and that they only take the best at large teams. Someone will have to lose early in the MVC Tournament though. It better not be a team that loses a couple of games before the tourney begins.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 12, 2006 -> 04:26 PM) There were a couple of threads last year discussing the possibilty of Evansville dropping to DII. Apparantly their board is in favor of it, athletic dept is not One of the biggest problems is about 10-15 years ago a new President was brought in who had visions of making Evansville a top liberal arts university. The changes hurt well-respected programs such as Nursing, Business and to a degree their Engineering program. I am not sure about the current status of their theater program but not long ago it was considered one of the elite theater programs in the nation. So yes, there is a definite difference in commitment, but the university is well supported by the community. I don't think going back to D-II is remotely an option. I have never read any talk about that at all in the local papers and my mother who works at the University has never mentioned it, so my guess that is the figment of someone's imagination. The local media would be all over that if it were being discussed.

Here is a quick glance at attendance for Evansville over the last 20 years. I think it speaks volumes about the state of the program. Kyyle that isn't exactly true. The coach before Merfield was Jim Crews who coached them to some of their best years and had them in the NCAA Tournament as recently as 1999 when they lost to Kansas. It is true that the program's decline began at the end of Coach Crews tenure, but it has continued on its downward spiral. The athletics landscape has definitely changed at the school. And there will need to be a higher level of commitment from the administration, there is no doubt. But a major reason that revenue is down is the basketball team. Attendance has been at or near an all-time low the past 5 years. From what I understand, the actual attendance is currently far below what they are announcing.
