Is Buehrle hurt?
A sore arm is normal. Pain is not. This was back in October. I would not give it a second's thought.

Recruiting Thread
This isn't technically recruiting, but since there isn't an active NCAA Football thread, I thought I would add it here. In addition to losing RB Max Martin, backup QB Matt Gutierrez also left Michigan. He will transfer to Idaho State, where he can play immediately at the D l-AA school. He will have one year at Idaho State. Martin, as previously mentioned, has enrolled at Alabama.

This is indirect recruiting news, but apparently Michigan running back Max Martin has left school and enrolled at Alabama.

Sox Hire Chris Singleton to Join Ed Farmer
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 11:19 PM) At first, I was a bit annoyed at the Score being cheap, but that was just knee jerk. Chris is smart and knows the game, and is young enough to bring a new perspective to the booth that even DJ couldn't bring his first year in the booth since Singleton is only in his 20's even now. As long as he learns on the job well and adjust, I think he will be fine. My biggest concern is that Chris has some excitement and energy, we need it to conteract Farmer, who is simply boring to listen to outside of September and October. I think you pretty much hit it on the head. Doing color, his "broadcasting skills" will be much less important than his ability to provide insight. Bringing in a young guy who is well spoken (assumed) may just bring a different element to a broadcast. He will have direct knowledge of what the players are going through today and how the game has changed. Not having heard him in the booth, it's hard for me to criticize the decision. I think the bigger change this year will be having Farmer move from color to play-by-play. Good or bad, that will have a more pronounced affect on the sound of this year's broadcast.

Sox Hire Chris Singleton to Join Ed Farmer
QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 06:35 PM) The list could go on forever. I think those guys who flew the plane into the TWin Towers, were men of faith. Maybe they could have called a good Sox game? I don't get the venom toward his statement. His original statement never said ANYTHING about him being a man of faith being tied to his abilities as a radio guy. He simply said "but one of the traits that always made me fond of him is his being a man of faith.". He made a simple comment about something he liked in Chris Singleton. Why jump on that??

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 13, 2006 -> 02:45 AM) Confuses me a bit to be honest. I guess maybe because they'd have nothing to make fun of in regards to the Illini if the football team was adequate? Sounds to me some think too highly of Illinois program (meaning themselves). I don't see anyone being too worried about Illinois being good in any sport any more so than any other team. If they are good in football, so be it. They'll still have to compete with Michigan, Ohio St, Wisconsin, Iowa and Penn St. Don't see any of those schools too worried.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 13, 2006 -> 01:37 AM) I think it is pretty clear that the thought of Illinois even having an adequate football program to go with the basketball program makes fans of other Big Ten teams extremely nervous (that's not a shot at those here, it's obvious anywhere you go and bring this subject up). Why would that make anyone nervous??

Baseball Analysts ranks Anderson and Young
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jan 12, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) I think if Thome jacks 40 homers, it doesn't matter if Chris Young is a HOF'er. In fact, I always wish our traded guys like Rauch or Reed or Gio to do very well Young didn't have anything to do with the acquisition of Thome.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Jan 11, 2006 -> 06:29 AM) Fields hit .252 with 55 walks and 142 strikeouts. Shouldn't he be repeating AA? I hope the Sox aren't rushing him just because of Crede/Boras. He also hit 27 doubles, 16 HR and had 79 RBI good for third in the league. His OBP was 90 points higher than his AVG. He hit .146 during the month of May. If he hit just .250 in that month, his season average would have jumped to .274. There is no doubt he is still learning, but unless the Sox want to hold him back for defensive reasons, I don't see the need for him to repeat AA.

I agree with greasy on this one. I expected IU to have a tough time in this game at full strength let alone down two starters. What IU lacked tonight was intensity. Two things happened that I think hurt them. They jumped out to an early lead and Marco was on early. I really think because of those two things, IU relaxed a bit. They never showed the defensive intensity that has been one of their strengths this season. They never really got after MSU on the defensive end and MSU got too many loose balls/long rebounds. IU seemed passive at times in those situations. I think Lavin was dead on early in the 2nd half when he said offense wasn't going to win the game, that the team to make defensive stops would pull away. All in all, despite the lack of intensity, I was okay with IU's performance tonight. They hung in there for a long time against a great team in a nearly impossible place to play. IU has lost 12 straight at the Breslin Center. Being down two starters did not help either. Give MSU props, they had to defend their home court and did it. No way they wanted to go to 0-3. Oh and aboz, he didn't call Paul Davis a pussy, just said he looked like one. ;-)

College
QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 8, 2006 -> 09:58 PM) No offense to anybody who went to SIU, but they don't have a good academic reputation (although, IIRC, their forestry program is excellent). Unless you're getting a significant amount of scholarship money from SIU, I agree with the above poster. Pick the school with the best program in your major. Who the hell picks a college because of academics????

Don't think this has been posted... Obviously health is more important than things such as recruiting, but I decided to post it here because it has to negatively affect IU's recruiting. Hoeppner has tumor removed from brain

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 9, 2006 -> 01:25 AM) Well yeah if he sucks they wont but what I was asking is if he plays fairly well could we expect a promotion to AAA or is the plan to keep him in AA unless he puts up crazy stats. The point is, there is no "organizational plan". If he's good enough and circumstances work out, then it will happen. He could end up starting in AAA. There are too many variables to know what will happen.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 9, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) So Sweeney staying in AA.... Do you know if they plan to promote him to AAA like mid-season or something like that? Mid-season promotions have everything to do with the player and how he is performing and injuries. Teams may have ideas of what they want to happen, but whether a player gets promoted or not has everything to do with how he performs.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jan 7, 2006 -> 03:33 PM) Well it might make you feel better to know that Lemming is a HUGE ND homer, so you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt. If Mustain wants a clear shot at the starting job, without having to face alot of talent in his own class at the position, then I can see Bama being the winner. I just feel Weiss' success with Quinn, and the lure of ND back again, that Mustain is ND's to lose even with 2 other QB commits. I don't see McElroy changing his mind, but I see Scouts #52 QB in the nation, 3 star Matthew Malouf dying for interest from Bama, but no offer. He most likely could be had if he's recruited in the next week or two by Bama, he's got very nice numbers and vitals. 6'2 211, 4.52 40, they just need to set him up a visit, he has his last two weekends open before signing day. Two things..... If Lemming is a ND homer, why would he insinuate that ND may not even offer Mustain unless something happens with one of the other two QB's? Second, I really think Bama is intent on getting quality or nothing at QB this year. I don't think they feel they HAVE to get one, but if they can get a top quality guy like those that have been mentioned, then they'll go for it. They could have had Chris Smelley, Rivals #9 Pro-Style QB, but never offered because they were a one QB recruiter with Tebow. He ended up with Spurrier at USC.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jan 6, 2006 -> 08:31 PM) With Mustain, the main competition seems to be ND and Alabama. Alabama seems to be getting nervous about the QB situation and has offered a few more QB's lately, including Greg McElroy at QB commit to Texas Tech. So that leads me to believe they aren't to confident in their QB recruiting right now. As for ND's current commits, Mustain isn't going to be scared off by either, most of the elite players in the nation relish competition, especially when you are ranked as the best in the nation at your position. With Quinn being around for one more year at most and the compeition being wide open after, and with Weiss at the helm, I still see ND as the frontrunner here. One of the recruiting gurus (Lemming??) was on the radio here today. He questioned whether Notre Dame was going to actually offer Mustain without one of the other QB's decommitting. Whether they encourage one to do so who knows. Notre Dame is already above their limit (I know, lots of teams do that) and they don't need 3 QB's. He said that Mustain told him personally, that his ideal situation would be Notre Dame, but he wasn't sure that was going to be an option. Apparently, Tennessee is once again making a big push, with Offensive Coordinator David Cutcliffe leading the way. As far as Alabama, I think the reason they are going after QB's is that Jimmy Barnes, their top QB recruit from last year (4 stars out of CA, I believe) has been slow to develop. John Parker Wilson is the odds on starter right now and he could be pretty good. But behind them they have Marc Guillen, who hasn't been able to beat out JP and Barnes. Jimmy Johns, another QB recruit from last year has been moved to HB and may end up the backup tailback next year behind Ken Darby. They sold out for Tim Tebow and lost him. They lost a local kid that (so they say) would have gone to Bama in a second but they never offered because they told Tebow from day one he was their one and only. After losing him, I think they were done unless they could get quality and that is what they are going after in Mustain and McElroy. They need quality behind what they have now. But for next year, if JP Wilson gets hurt, they could be in big trouble.

Kris Honel
Ok guys, recovery from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months. IF Kris had Tommy John this offseason, then he is not throwing full steam now and won't play this year. I'd say best case scenario for someone that had Tommy John right after the season is a July return.

QUOTE(ilsox7 @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 02:38 PM) Here's my question, and I mean it sincerely. I completely agree that a team can be playing better at one point in the season and then totally go in the tank, thus making what was once a not a bad loss look awful 2 months later. But what no one has had an answer for is why they think MSU was one of those teams. When you look at the facts, they had not played anyone near respectable. They had dominated 2 pretty awful teams. If they had throttled at least 1 decent team, I could see the argument. But how is this any different than, say, a college basketball team beating the crap out of Chicago State and NIU and claiming they were a good team b/c they looked good against two horrid opponents? That's the argument I have made and I have yet to see an answer that satisfies it. The only thing I keep getting is, "Well, they looked good doing it." My response is, "I sure as hell hope they did b/c those teams sucked." Here are the scores from their games this year: Beat Kent State (1-10) 49-14 Beat Hawaii (5-7) 42-14 Beat ND (9-2) 44-41 Lost to Michigan (7-4) 34-31 Lost to tOSU (9-2) 35-24 Lost to NU (7-4) 49-14 Beat IU (4-7) 46-15 Lost to Purdue (5-6) 28-21 Lost to Minnesota (7-4) 41-18 Lost to PSU (10-1) 31-22 Like I said, if they had beaten a decent team or two before or after ND, I could see the argument that they were simply playing better and something happened to send them on a horrific streak the last part of the season. But I just don't see that argument. Watch a freakin game once rather than look at numbers on paper. It doesn't take anyone with much of a football IQ to see that Michigan State was very dangerous early one. They played well against Notre Dame, battled Michigan and stayed with Ohio State for the most part. All you have to do is actually watch the games to know that MSU was a MUCH different team late in the season. Like I said before, this ain't rocket science.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 07:01 AM) The second half is 50 percent of who the team is, they may have been playing good at the time, but they are not a good team. And their games early count as much as the games late. You just don't get it. Maybe the light will come on at some random point in the future, who knows, but I am not going to argue until I am blue in the face.
