  1. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 06:35 PM) I was one who felt he'd be an excellent 4th OF in the long term. He had a very good year last year but still needs to work on some things. Walks vs. K's, for one. I'm not jumping down his throat, a lot of 27 yr. old players still have things to work on. Agreed
  2. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 06:02 PM) I don't recall anyone saying that. My memory fails me in my old age. Just an update on negotiations. Wow. Typical Sox practices. Maybe it was just my interpretation.
  3. QUOTE(hi8is @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 09:29 AM) you make it sound like you were the only one. tisk task.... there was much support for arow... not as much cynism as support, but still there were a large few who were on his side. I was one of the few that felt he would be good enough to be an everyday player, so I will stand by my comments. If I had to guess I'd say 95% of the people either thought he sucked and belonged in AAA or was no better than a 4th OF. I believe that is accurate, but am open to arguments that Rowand had a bigger following than that. If it was there, it must have been a silent minority, because I don't remember reading it.
  4. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 4, 2005 -> 05:27 PM) ESPN Radio 1000's Bruce Levine reports... -AJP wants a $3M per year deal; the Sox offer is less than $3M. -30 year old Japanesse 2B Iguchi is looking for a three year contract; the Sox have not offered him a third year at this point. Wow. Typical Sox practices. At this point, I'm hoping Kenny can snag at least one of those guys. Just because a player wants something doesn't mean the Sox should just lay down and give it to them.
  5. Allow me to add that all of this is based on assumptions. We don't know the finances of a hockey team. Even if their "operating expenses" are way down, their revenues obviously would be the same. My thought is if hockey teams were losing as much money as they said they were, that without revenues coming in, they can't be raking in profits now, just because their operating costs are down. If they were due to lose $20 million this year and now will only lose $10 million, would an owner spend the $10 million elsewhere? I guess if he thought it would help his other investment make money it is possible. The bottom line is that there are ways he could do whatever he wanted with his money. Whether he is spending more on the Tigers simply because the Red Wings season is in the tank, is very assumptive and there is no way to know. My guess is he is spending more on the Tigers because he got sick of seeing a less than half full brand new stadium. After a season like the Tigers had two years ago, he has to spend money just to bring them back to respectability and if Detroit fans will spend more money on the Tigers since there is no hockey then that is just a bonus.
  6. Its actually fairly simple. NHL teams budgeted and planned for this occurrence so they knew how much money it would cost to continue to run the club. He can do pretty much what he wants with his money. For example, say the Sox had $75 million budgeted for player payroll and baseball had a strike/lockout. Reinsdorf could do whatever he wanted to with his own money and could spend and extra $50 million on the Bulls if he wanted to. Now I am guessing he can't just withdraw $50 million fron White Sox accounts, but if you have two businesses, there is nothing keeping him from spending money in one place that won't spend somewhere else. So he keeps the books straight. All that does is make the Sox more profitable than the Bulls by about $50 million (in theory based on the assumption that the additional $50 million doesn't create more revenues for the Bulls). It's basically paper money. Granted, this example would not work because I am assuming the investment groups for the Bulls and Sox are not the same and not all of the money is Jerrry's. But the principle is still the same. However you account for it, money can be allocated wherever the owner wants it.
  7. Would someone mind giving me a quick summary of what happened with Mariotti? 3 sentences or less will do just fine
  8. that's pretty cool, cheat........ you don't mind if I still call you cheat, do you? Habits die hard for some of us. lol

I'm jumping in late on this, but ones that jump off the top of my head are.... 1. The Contest 2. Shrinkage 3. Marine Biologist 4. Good Naked, Bad Naked (not sure if that is the proper title) 5. Soup Nazi 6. There was one about faking orgasms, but I haven't seen it in a long time. Don't remember which season it was from or the actual name of the episode. 7. George with the Houston Astros execs 8. George sleeping under his desk 9. JFK revisited There are a ton more I am not thinking of right now. I got the first three seasons for Xmas but haven't gotten to watch too many of them yet.
  10. I find it funny that when most everyone on this and other Sox message boards were calling for Rowand's head and saying he would never be an everyday player, that I was one of the few predicting his success as a full-time player. Now after he has had a good year most everyone believes he is a future star and I am one of the few saying hold off on that flavor of Kool Aid. I am still a Rowand backer, but I think perhaps some are expecting too much from him. I don't think Rowand is a .300 hitter. I have always said he has good power potential and I still stand by that, but I think he will end up being a .270's hitter. While his plate discipline has improved and may continue to do so, I don't think he'll ever be considered a high OBP guy either. He'll be respectable, but if he hits .270 with a .320-.330 OBP will people be disappointed? I hope not.
  11. damn the Texas-Michigan game was awesome (except for the result). So far, the bowl season has been awesome. Lots of great games. My computer is in the shop so I have been doing nothing but watching football, much of it in high definition. Life, despite no computer, is good! Btw, Brian, why didn't Jason Avant play today??
  12. Gotta stop hanging out with boys, darlin.
  13. No one says there is a limit of one.
  14. I only get 45 minutes?? What are you thinking, my dear? My charm would keep me there at least 2-3 hours, if not overnight. ;-)
  15. it gets redistributed.......... not sure exactly how, but I do not believe it is in equal shares
  16. What time should I be over for dinner?
  17. When you watch Major League 2, look out for Miller, the Indians 2B. He is a good friend of mine. He shows up more in the widescreen version, getting dropped when reformatted to 4:3. A tidbit.... look closely when the Red Sox (think it was Red Sox) left-handed batter hits the ball that Tanaka robs from being a HR. The hitter is none other than Miller (my friend) in a mustache. They didn't have another left-handed hitter that could swing well enough to hit the ball like they wanted, so they had him switch uniforms, put a mustache on him and let him take a crack at it. They used minor league players in the movie because they wanted more realistic baseball scenes than the original Major League.
  18. Not really. Just looking to test myself. I have only played against two people. The settings I listed make it much more difficult to hit. It took me awhile to get used to them. Who knows, I may get my ass kicked? My guess is that it would be a low scoring game. So the offer still stands......
  19. I've only had the big names in Chicago - Giordano's, Uno, Due, Gino's East. Of those I like Giordano's the best. I love Chicago Deep Dish pizza. There is a place here in Birmingham that serves up a pie just as good as any of the places above. The owners at one time worked for Eduardo's in Chicago, but have adapted their own style. It is a one location, small place yet last year was named Birmingham's Best Pizza. Only seats about 30-40. I love thin crust pizza, but can't seem to order it when I go to Chicago.
  20. I vote for Greg Zaun, if only for the fact that he is fun at parties! He was at a friend of mine's wedding a few years ago (they were minor league teammates) and we spent some quality time in line at the bar (several times). He carried with him a nice metal collapsable shot glass. He'd go to the bar, get a drink for him and his (wife, sig. other, I can't recall) and pull out the shot glass while he was there. He'd do a shot or two, tap it on the bar and it would collapse into about 1/3 its full size, stick it in his pocket and say "see ya in about 15 minutes". He was wearing his Marlins WS ring. It was pretty sweet. He was pretty cool.
  21. Beastly, play a couple of games with the following settings and I'll be happy to let you whip my ass...... Level: Pro Fielding: Manual Strike Zone: Off Hot/Cold Zones: Off Pitch Cursor: Off Fielding Aid: On PM me when you are ready.
  22. There has to be a reason Burke has never been a full-tiime catcher, even when in the Minor Leauges. I don't think Burke has EVER caught more than 90 games in a season as a professional. Most years in the minors he was catching 30 or 40 games, while playing 1B or 3B part-time as well. He hasn't played a full season of games, regardless of position, since 1998, if I recall correctly. That was his first year of AA, I believe.
  23. I agree in that it is way too early to really evaluate either of those two. I'm really surprised Hernandez has gotten as much love as he has to this point.
  24. Saban says yes to Dolphins. This changes the landscape of the SEC big time and even college football as a whole, to an extent.
