  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 12:53 PM) The only reason they made it was because the team that actually won their division lost the CCG. Thus is the BCS It's NOT the BCS. The BCS has nothing to do with these bowl selections after the NC game. The Big Ten chose to have a championship game and it was universally lauded. Now people complain the CG screwed another team. Welcome to the world of championship games other conferences have dealt with for years. It is what it is. I promise you Michigan would have rather played in the Big Ten Championship and had the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 11:43 AM) Sugar bowl was a joke with selections. I don't feel these bcs bowls should get extra significance if they are just going to pick whoever they feel will make the most money rather than reward the best teams that year. That's great Michigan, you made a BCS bowl...because your fans travel more than Kstates. Great resume. It's just like it has ALWAYS been. Get over it. This is nothing new!
  3. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 11:25 AM) There are 10 available BCS slots. Six go automatically to the champions of the six BCS conferences. Two more automatically went to Alabama and Stanford for finishing in the top 4. That left two slots where the bowls could actually pick from among eligible teams. The Sugar Bowl ended up with both of those picks and took #11 Virginia Tech and #13 Michigan. #6 Arkansas and #9 South Carolina were ineligible due to the SEC already having two BCS teams. Eligible teams passed over were #7 Boise State, #8 Kansas State, #12 Baylor, and #14 Oklahoma. I'm not in any way a fan of the Big 12 (minus 2) but they really got doubly screwed over by the BCS this year by not getting OSU into the championship game and by not getting a team ranked #8 into any BCS game. Just as a matter of principle, I'm going to make it a point to watch Boise State and Kansas State's bowl games and not the Sugar Bowl. First of all because the Sugar Bowl didn't pick the most-deserving teams and secondly because Virginia Tech really blows and will probably lose by 20+ points. I'm sorry but are you 12 and this is your college football season? Allow me to introduce you to some facts and history.... The SOLE PURPOSE of the BCS when it was created and today is to determine the top two teams to play the NC game. The selection of the bowl participants for the other games has nothing to do with the BCS other than some basic rules set up to protect non-BCS programs (automatic bids, etc). Once eligibility is established, the bowls choose the teams they want based on a picking order that rotates each year. This is the way it ALWAYS has been, even before the BCS was created. Teams that draw more interest and sell more tickets have always been given preference over other teams. Who "deserves" it is one subjective and two NEVER been a factor in those choices. So my recommendation to you is watch whatever games you want, but to act as if this is something new or even BCS related is simply ignorant.
  4. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 08:15 AM) What's fueling my hate is that this is college football where "every game counts" and November 5th apparently didn't mean a damn thing. When there's no playoff system there should be no rematches in the National Championship especially when the losing team lost that game at home. And I actually enjoyed the first game, I couldn't care less if there wasn't a touchdown but the BCS is completely ruining college football for me, I love college sports but the fact that this f***in monstrosity is allowed to decide a National Champion is f***in garbage. And to be honest Kenny, I really don't know if I will watch the game, I just couldn't care less. I'll watch Ok State-Stanford and Oregon-Wisconsin, the rest of the BCS games are a complete snooze fest for me, just don't care. I would submit to you that November 5th very much did count. If that game was not as tightly contested and go to OT, none of this discussion would be had at this point. The fact that the two teams played as closely as they did created the possibility of the rematch, along with others losses of course. If that game finished 20-6, we'd be seeing OK St. So the result of that game has very much shaped how this has all played out. Especially since some feel Alabama outplayed LSU in the game and a few missed opportunities cost them.
  5. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 5, 2011 -> 02:41 AM) Oklahoma State played a better schedule in a better conference and has better wins. The only tangible argument for Alabama is their loss is better, but their loss is to a team they don't deserve a rematch with anyway. Alabama didn't win (or tie) for their conference, they didn't win (or tie) for their division. To have them in the national championship game is hilariously stupid. And I'm tired of people saying "Alabama is the second best team". How do we know? Because they played well against Arkansas at home and won at an overrated Penn State outfit? Oklahoma State absolutely destroyed Baylor and Oklahoma, who are both far better than anybody Alabama beat short of Arkansas. I can't say for sure they are better than Alabama, but I can't say for sure they aren't either. So I have to go on resumes, and theirs is clearly the better of the two. Luckily, for ESPN, their promoting the Alabama/LSU National Title game last night because it serves their personal best interests helped keep Alabama high enough in all of the polls to play in this imaginary title game. Quite frankly, LSU should get a share of the title even if they lose. They would be 13-1 to Alabama's 12-1, have a 1-1 record against them (with the win on the road), and have a far better overall resume. The whole Alabama didn't win their conference or even their division argument is stupid. Twice teams have made it to the BCS title game before this without winning their conference. If you are going to stick with that argument and we ultimately get a playoff, I sure as hell hope you will be for a plan of conference champions only and no wild card or at-large bids. Many years ago only the conference champion in basketball got to go to the NCAA Tournament. Everyone else had to go to the NIT or stay home. I don't see anyone supporting that anymore. Until the rules are changed, it is what it is. Everyone is acting as if this is a big shock or major travesty, when what happened this year is basically the same thing that has ALWAYS happened. All that said, I do understand why there is so much angst. And I agree with the basic premise of your final point. If Alabama wins, especially in a tight game, did we really solve anything? It would be a tough pill to swallow. But the other teams had their chances and didn't get it done.
  6. QUOTE (danman31 @ Dec 4, 2011 -> 10:36 PM) What one touchdown is too much to ask? The last game didn't have one freaking touchdown! Not one! That's like a 1-0 baseball game going 10 innings. Jack Morris outdueling John Smoltz 1-0 in 10 innings in the World Series was one of the best baseball games ever! I thought you were a baseball guy, c'mon!
  7. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 4, 2011 -> 10:24 PM) I would have rather seen OSU v LSU. Maybe OSU gets smoked, but at least its something different. Personally, so would I. But I don't understand the outrage from everyone (not you specifically). There have always been times in which I would have rather seen a different matchup, whether for the championship or a major bowl. To me OK State would have made for a more intriguing matchup, yet produced a very similar result to most of LSU's other games, a roughly three touchdown win. While I am against rematches in general, I have zero doubt the best two teams are playing. Personally, I think they should just give the title to LSU and forget Jan. 9. LSU has done everything it is supposed to do. Nothing happened this year than has any other year. In fact it was quite predictable. The only reason it was close is because OK State played very well Saturday night against a team perceived to be a top team (though I am not so sure) and it made people think twice. OK State was 5th in the coaches poll and Harris poll last week. And everyone wants them to jump all the way to #2? Hell Stanford should be pissed they got jumped (yes I know it didn't affect their bowl game). At what point in the history of bowl games and polls, does the #5 team jump the #2 and #4 teams without either of them having lost? I can't remember any.
  8. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 4, 2011 -> 10:48 PM) This was the last straw, I'm done with college football. I'll miss bowl season but this BCS thing has totally spiraled out of control. How has it spiraled out of control? Both Stanford and OK State had an opportunity to be there and controlled their own destiny and didn't get it done. This is NOT the first time we've had a team that didn't win their conference in the BCS title game so I don't understand why everyone views this as a new deal. Why not go back to the old way then where conferences are tied to bowls and the best two teams wouldn't play each other? That way we would have LSU playing in the Sugar, OK State playing in the Orange and Alabama playing in who knows what bowl.
  9. You guys must hate pitcher's duels too. So baseball is no fun without 10-12 runs? I will say this. The rematch will have more points scored because both teams will employ more agressive game plans. Both teams were very conservative in the first game.
  10. From everything I am hearing and reading, it is going to be very close between Alabama and OK State tonight for the final spot in the NC game. MUCH closer than anyone could have expected going into yesterday. If OK State goes, Michigan likely goes to the Fiesta.
  11. Chances of OK State passing Bama in the final BCS poll increasing big time. If the Harris poll reflects what happened in the Coaches and AP poll, we're going to have an LSU - OK St final and Michigan probably gets knocked out of the Sugar Bowl.
  12. Rock, think Meyer will be able to hold onto/reel back in Brionte Dunn? I know he's not your favorite, but what were your impressions of him last night?
  13. QUOTE (farmteam @ Nov 27, 2011 -> 08:21 PM) IU finally remembered how to shoot with about 14 minutes left in the game. Really impressed with their defense again (and Butler's too, at times). Zeller was quiet early, but once he started asserting himself he played well. Sheehey played really well all game, and Watford was a non-factor. There were more bodies on the floor than any game I've ever seen, though. I said the same exact thing about the bodies on the floor. Butler just has a way of making you play ugly. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Sheehey. I hope to see some shot fakes and driving to the basket and finishing strong. He is athletic and strong enough to do so. If he keeps hitting shots from outside that will open up many more possibilities for him. Verdell and Watford weren't very good tonight. Watford if things don'/t go well for him early tends to disappear or force things, which means turnovers. But if he gets in a rhythm early, he can be a big part of the team's success this year.
  14. Damn, I hadn't logged on here in almost 3 weeks. It takes a long time to catch up on both this and the college football thread. Glad to be back and looking forward to IU - Butler tonight.
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 09:17 AM) You are underestimating the real Miami. And of course there were other reasons I went there but clearly the sarcasm detector wasnt working this morning. If anyone knows anything about Miami and has been there you would see why anyone would choose that school. That plus the scholarship was a no brainer. I visited the Miami campus in 1990 for a weekend. We were in bars, on campus, at lunch in the dining hall, etc. I didn't see 10 ugly girls all weekend! Conversely, I went back to Evansville and saw 10 ugly girls in the first 30 minutes back on campus. I would compare Miami to Ole Miss in the South. They have always had a reputation for having good looking women. Maybe not a ton of 10's but 7-9' all over the place.
  16. If anyone missed the Alfredo Angulo - James Kirkland fight Saturday night on HBO, I would recommend finding a replay this week and watching it. It was one of the most action packed fights I have ever seen and the first round was one of the best ever.
  17. QUOTE (zenryan @ Nov 6, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) I dont see how the NCAA can punish Penn State on the field of play. Maybe a loss of scholarships because of lack of institutional control but it's not the current player's fault and future players shouldnt be punished because it didnt involve any players. Get rid of Paterno, the AD and whoever else that knew of what this guy did and maybe some loss of scholarships. I don't see this being an NCAA issue at all. It's not a football issue. It's a personnel issue.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 6, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) 8 SEC teams average 1 more player per year than the highest Big Ten team. Since 2002 the SEC has signed almost 600 more players than the Big Ten and has been over 25 players 54 times to the 18 of the Big Ten. They have signed over 28 players 33 times. Right now there are 6 SEC teams who have signed more players than there are available scholarships per the NCAA rule. Bama, LSU, Ole Miss and Arkansas all signed more than 10 players over their budget to be at 85. Who cares about going back to 2002. That doesn't affect the teams on the field today. The bottom line is the Big Ten can sign up to 28 per year. Players leave and there is natural attrition at every school. 5th year seniors who graduate and aren't playing much don't come back. Just because they signed more than 10 players over the 85 limit it doesn't mean anything. I'm not sure what you mean by 6 SEC teams have signed more players than are available scholarships. I am assuming it goes back to attrition. If players transfer, quit, get kicked off the team or whatever reason leave early, they should be replaced. So unless you are intimately familiar with the roster management of each school, I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.
  19. When is the official kickoff of the regular season? I know IU plays Friday night, but not sure if other teams play earlier. When does MSU play on the air craft carrier?
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 5, 2011 -> 10:11 PM) At the end of the day, LSU and Bama are coached by Big 10 guys. Right now the difference between the SEC and everyone else is success in the NC game. I dont know how great of an indicator that is (but it is the best one we have). The other difference is over-signing and that practice just needs to go. I think oversigning is a bit overstated. First off, the SEC has changed their rules which severely limit the practice, possibly even less so than the Big Ten Policy. Second, let's not forget that the Big Ten can oversign by three to 28. I agree with you on premise, but they are still limited to 25 scholarships per class, just like the Big Ten. I think the instances of them forcing players out is more the exception and not the rule. I looked at 8 SEC teams and their classes from the past 4 years. (I didn't look at Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State or Vandy because they don't count) Only 8 of the 32 classes from those 8 teams had classes over the 28 that the Big Ten allows. The biggest two offenders were Arkansas, South Carolina and Auburn with two instances each. I know Auburn not only went through a coaching change, but they also lost a lot of players due to discipline and other various reasons. Alabama has not surpassed 28 since 2008. LSU only in 2010 with 29. Georgia, Florida and Tennessee have not gone over 27 at all in the past four years.
  21. QUOTE (bulokis @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) Pacquiao vs Mayweather in May 2012? That would be nice! As much as I can't stand to listen to him talk, I still lean toward Mayweather winning, simply because of defense and ability to counter.
  22. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) http://news.yahoo.com/congressman-rush-com...?bouchon=602,il Interested to see what people's overall thoughts are on the NCAA. I was a D1 guy, for a few years and have my own feelings on them. some negative, some positive. How's this for opinions? Bobby Rush is a freakin idiot!! Government should govern and keep their noses out of sports where they know nothing!
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 3, 2011 -> 10:00 AM) 20-30 years ago there also was no 3-point shot and they wore shorts that ended 10 inches above the knee. Just because something is an old tradition doesn't mean it's a good idea. I think I'd rather them wear the nut huggers of yesterday than the "shorts" that go halfway down their calf that some teams wear now. Basically, some teams wear baggy capri pants. Know any guy that looks good in capris? lol
  24. How young is everybody here??? Does no one remember that the toilet paper thing used to be done at arenas all over the country after the first score of a game. Of course it didn't last more than a year or two, but it was done widely across the country. Call it a fad if you will, but Sportscenter used to show it all the time. As far as this school, its a tradition and done only once a year. The timing of 20 years is about right for when it was happening across the country. The home team gets a technical every year. Everyone knows its coming and they are prepared to clean it up right away. I say launch away, and give me a roll to throw!
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) Hopefully he does all right there. I know he has had his issues, but he really did seem like a good in the conversations I had with him. With him and GR III they should have a nice class. ss2k5, I should know this, but who are you a fan of?
