Cotts started tonight
The comparison was based on their readiness for immediate success in the Majors. They both did well right off the bat, and I think Cotts is as ready as they were. I also mentioned that even with a promotion now, Cotts may still need to start next year in AAA, so I am not leaving out long term implications either. I thought I had explained it quite well, not only in my post but when we talked earlier today. The comparison IS legit in every way. I have never once said Cotts is ready to become a Sox top starter right now, nor did I say he would begin next season in the rotation. I simply said that he is as ready as Wells and Buehrle were when they made their debuts, which were quite successful. Thank you

Cotts started tonight
What kind of dumbass question is that?

Cotts started tonight
If I recall correctly, Kip was 4-0 and pitched very well in the season he was first called up. I would consider that a very good example, thank you.

Cotts started tonight
Cotts walked 4 guys in 7 innings. One of the walks was intentional, so in reality it was only 3. He definitely wasn't his best tonight. Didn't have great command, which led to the walks and 114 pitches in 6 innings. All that said, Cotts threw shutout ball for six innnings and only gave up two hits, on a night that he wasn't great. I think you can find some positive in that, without looking too hard. From a guy who has seen some pretty good prospects come through Birmingham, I can honestly say he is ready to move up. I am not saying that beginning the year in AAA may not be necessary, but like Buehrle and Kip Wells before him, he is definitely ready for a month in the Big Leagues. Not sure if anyone has noticed, but the run support he gets is s***. Not that the Barons score many runs for anybody, but its been really bad for Cotts lately.

Why did kenny not pick up Nelson off waivers
One other note about waiver claims..... There are also times when teams will let a guy go by knowing he is about to be traded in a "gentleman's agreement" so that another time the player they want will be left alone. This may or may not be the case here, but it is possible. Perhaps KW owed someone a favor? Perhaps he felt that a swap of Benitez for Nelson didn't make that big of a difference for either team so he passed? There could be lots of reasons which of course we will never know unless KW wants us to.

Jose Paniauga to be signed August 15th!!
Get over it, DA. I didn't hear you b****ing when they signed Carlos Castillo, did I? If they sign the guy to a minor league contract then what do you care? If the guy earns a promotion and helps the club then we are better off for it. I didn't hear ONE person call him a savior. This is a minor league signing, with the hope the guy might be able to help. If they catch lightning in a bottle then great. If he stinks up AAA, no harm done. You and HSC are wound WAY too tight on this one.
-
Jose Paniauga to be signed August 15th!!
You could say exactly the same thing about Loaiza before the season began. Teams were certainly not lining up to get E-Lo. Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle. The guy has had some success in the past. Is it set in stone he will report directly to the Sox? Might he be a AAA sign to see if he has enough left?
-
So Wright does not pitch against As right?
You are correct.
-
4 man rotation
The Sox are 11-13 or 12-13 when their 5th starter takes his turn. Not giving anything away.
-
Jose Paniauga to be signed August 15th!!
Yeah, let's not pick up anybody that had over a 5.00 ERA last year. That would be stupid...... oh wait, didn't Loaiza have an ERA over 5.00 last year? Let's cut Esteban right now, realizing our mistake. He can't be good because he sucked last year. I look at his numbers in Seattle and see a pretty respectable reliever. Obviously he struggled in Detroit, but I wouldn't complain about his Seattle numbers.

Minor League Boxes for 8/6
Barons had 6 freakin errors...... twas ugly
-
Stewart
Plus when not injured at Charlotte he's gone 0-3 with an era of 6.15. I would discount that because he hasn't been right since taking that line drive off the chest while pitching for the Sox.
-
Stewart
Once again, try to pay attention....... Maybe read the Minor League boxscores thread on occasion..... Stewart has been on the DL and has not pitched since July 12.

Joe Valentine
I never really felt good about the Koch deal on any level, but I didn't hate it either. I took a wait and see approach to it, yet deep down I didn't think it was a great trade for the Sox. I hated to see the Sox give up on Joe because he can be so dominating, but at the same time heard Cotts was solid and was open-minded to the trade being good for the Sox at the MLB level, despite my initial fears. I recently spoke with one of the A's higher level scouts and he told me they weren't down on Valentine at all and that they still liked him. He ackowledged his control issues and struggles, but said they weren't worried long term. I agree with MSF and Cerb that his control is what will make him or break him in the Big Leagues. He has an excellent fastball and a nasty slider. Joe was truly a great guy and is a guy anyone would root for if they had met him. Time will tell whether he can get the walks under control well enough to succeed at that level.
