Jim, Rios is not on the 40-man roster. Basically, if a player is designated for assignment, that means they are taking him off the 40-man roster and wanting to send him to AAA outright. If they want to send a guy like White who has extended service time, down to AAA without taking him off the 40-man, I believe it is handled differently, but I am not sure how.

My thoughts are Borchard, Adkins, Sanders, Hummel, Riviera, possibly Diaz and Munoz. Cotts will be added only if he is needed to pitch this year. I doubt you will see a courtesy call-up for him. Also, keep in mind that since the Sox are in a pennant race, they may call up fewer guys. It is not always a positive thing to bring up lots of guys and not play them at all, but you also want to reward guys. Different teams have different philosophies about what is best, especially when a pennant race is involved.
  3. No........... Cotts will only be added if they need him to pitch in the Big Leagues this year. Reed will not be added.

  7. I'm sitting at home tonight (because I have such the social life) and am flipping through the channels, when I notice a strange game on Comcast. It just happened to be the Kannapolis-Charleston game. So, of course I had to watch. I only caught a few innings, but came away with a few impressions..... Andy Gonzalez - I really liked what little I saw in him. I saw two AB's. The first was a sharp single to center. The second was a groundout. He ran hard on both hits and rounded first very aggressively on the single. Thought about taking two, but retreated. He made one really nice play on a line drive and doubled off a runner. He needs to develop strength however. I think his hitting will come in time but I don't see him progressing any faster than a level a year. We need to be patient with him, and not worry about his low average. Brian Miller - I wasn't impressed. He looked very average. His breaking ball was flat and his motion was not smooth. He gave up 10 hits and walked 3 in less than 6 innings. Pedro Lopez - Very slight build... Didn't seem to have any pop. Didn't hit the ball real hard... Thomas Brice - Has a very nice swing and a good body... Has no power though.... Enough rambling..... i know about the players, i was wondering about the clubs. worst record, if that by this yr record or based on the draft? The waiver list goes from worst record to best in your league...... then the other league, from worst to best record.... So the Sox would be near the end of the chances to claim a player from the national league. Generally, players get claimed and pulled back unless they just have a huge contract. Teams have to be careful about claiming a player just to block them from another team, because if he doesn't get pulled back, you are stuck with him and his contract. The likelihood of the Sox claiming a player and getting to keep him is very small.
  12. I may be late on this, but Selig stepped in and nixed the Aaron Boone trade to the Yankees as it was originally structured. They originally were sending Brandon Claussen and $3.5 million in cash for Aaron Boone and Gabe White. Selig made them add prospects and lower than cash total. Apparently there is a $1 million cap on cash that can exchange hands in a trade. The new deal is Boone for Claussen, another prospect and $1 million in cash. Then White was traded in a second deal for a player or two to be named later and $400,000 in cash. Apparently the teams were none to happy. to Bud for having some balls! Full Story
  13. I don't see it as a lopsided deal either. To me Moss is no better than a #4 starter (#3 tops) and while the other two may be good prospects, the Giants already have Williams and Foppert. Remember when the Sox had a ton of guys "ready" for the big leagues? Obviously it doesn't always work out for you, but the Giants feel those two will be very good. They don't have room for 3 or 4 young guys to all be in the rotation at the same time, so they part with a couple. By doing that they get a guy that everyone on this board wanted for the Sox. A guy who most people think has a good chance to put SF over the top. Hell yeah I do this trade if I am Sabean. I go deep into the playoffs again and possibly win th WS. Then, I go to Ponson and say "let's get a deal done. You belong in SF". If I sign him then it is the best trade I ever made. If I don't, then I took a shot at winning the WS and shouldn't be faulted.
  14. Ya, good move...but it was pretty obvious. I mean i was thinking the same thing, as was Hawk right away...he said "go to Sandy" right before commercial break He's a major league manager, he should be able to get moves like that right Why aren't you a Major League manager then? ;-)
  15. If they are going to shuffle players, then sending Ginter or Harris down would only be a paper move. They can activate Wright and send someone down without them actually going somewhere. They can then send Wright down and activate the other player without Wright going anywhere. They could all be paper moves without the players physically going anywhere.
  16. They can shuffle Ginter down to Charlotte and back as many times as they want to this year. Options are technically option years and each year only counts as one option, no matter how many times a guy goes up and down. He has already been sent down this year so his option for this year is spent.
  17. What makes you think that? A hunch? Seen it or heard it somewhere?
  18. If Wright can't do the job, then expect Cotts to get the ball next.
  19. Schoeneweis has only thrown 41 innings all year with his longest outing being 2 2/3. He will not be your starter.
  20. Wright will be the starter tomorrow. He will not be re-called and activated until after tonight's game. Someone will have to be sent down, traded or released to open a spot for him.
  21. Sure it could happen and in a variety of ways. Guys are put on waivers at different times. Kendall should not be a problem getting through because of his contract. Giles may be claimed and if he is then SD can pull him back. They could then put him on waivers again (not sure how long you have to wait, but you can put a guy back through again) and SD could claim him. The Pirates could then allow Giles to go to SD on a waiver claim and then just complete the trade for Kendall as if it were the original deal. There are certainly ways it could happen from that standpoint. I am not sure about any no-trade clauses Giles may have.
  22. When did this supposedly happen? I don't recall seeing anything more than a quote from Minaya saying that he didn't feel MLB would approve a trade of either Vazquez or Guerrero. I don't think Bud actually nixed anything. Omar may have called his boss (which I guess would be DuPuy - sp?) and inquired to the possibility and been discouraged from doing so. If there was more to it, I'd like to see where that came from. What was the source?
  23. Man I blink for a moment and you guys bolt on me!
  24. From ESPN.com Boston acquired right-hander Jeff Suppan, reliever Brandon Lyon and pitching prospect Anastacio Martinez from Pittsburgh for pitching prospects Freddy Sanchez and Mike Gonzalez. Lyon was traded by Boston to Pittsburgh in a two-for-two pitching swap on July 22.
