BTW, I have to say that KW somehow found a market for Gload that I didnt think existed. He wasnt a big contributor, played basically only 1B and KW scored a great young arm.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 03:35 AM) And that's unlike a Howard, who started out about 240lbs IIRC, and he's now about 275. Okafor's about 258. Think about this: Oden is already 270+ Alot of good young big men coming up in the league. -
24 year old left handed power pitcher. I cant stop drooling. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) Any possiblity the Sox are maybe thinking of using Sisco as a starter if they move either Javy or Garland? I would say he is going to maybe be a replacement down the line, not next season.

I feel sorry for Wells, he had to take the contract, but he just sealed his fate of never getting a chance to play in a World Series.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 10:53 AM) Tank, your boy with all his drugs is now dead (by the gun), your lucky your not dead.....take the warning and get out of this life before your not here anymore. Get your s*** together personally, please. It's beyond football now. If this was a movie, I would suspect Tank and friends for wanting to get rid of the number 1 trouble maker in his life. -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 11:45 AM) i think they are overreacting a little, as Gload shoudl hit .300+ and give them stellar defense, but Sisco should have garnered a larger price tag. The cubs have been interested in him for years to start for them, and they were throwing around alot better name to trade for him than Ross Gload. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 12:19 PM) How hard does he throw? Gas.

QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) If its true, I like the deal. Sisco fits the model for the team out of the pen. Lots of nasty stuff... and he's a lefty. I like Gload, he will be missed. But I think the deal is alright (presuming its true). wow, great trade by KW. Sisco has a GREAT arm, Gload was basically worthless to us.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 05:47 PM) BWAHAHAHA. Uhhh no. Okafor had a great start to the season, but he's dropped off lately over the past 10 games since Brezec got back into the lineup and Sean May got hot. I was baiting you for all that may have responded. I would rather have Howard, but it looked like Okafor gave him some trouble for sure. -
PA, im online tonight, in case you fee like training a retard.

QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 02:10 PM) I think it has more to do with the length o f the contracts not so much the money he has a problem with. Remember JR approved a market breaking deal with Albert Belle. He got burned with long deals to Britt burns, Richard Dotson and Floyd Bannister soon after his group bought the team. They are smart not to give long term deals to pitchers they rarely work out. The trick is to keep young, pitcher rotating through the team to keep winning. We'll see if KW can do it but I like the philosophy (of course communism is good in theory also why does everyone need to be so greedy.) With today's marketplace, and the cost of pitching, IMO you need to keep 2 young starters in the rotation at all times to compensate for what your top of the rotation guys will be paid. Nowadays its pretty feasible to think that your rotation will cost you upwards of 50 million per year, maybe more. If you have 17, 15, 13, for your top three guys (maybe more) then your other two better be in arb years or pre-arb years.

Anyone else who is starting out on this game, PA gives some pretty helpful tips and I am still going to learn more. Its very hard to grasp at first without some help.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 09:22 AM) That was the initial report, but they said on the news last night that his buddy actually had two ounces on him, which means that he's a dealer. Nobody carries two ounces around unless they intend to distribute some of it, whereas, a half ounce would qualify as a personal stash. Sometimes. Unless you had to buy in bulk to get a better price, or you smoke everyday because your buddy is an NFL athlete and supports you. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 09:18 AM) That would be fantastic! "Where would he play?" It looks like he has almost split time between #1 and #2 in the order, but I am worried about whether last season was just a mirage. As a #1 hitter last year he hit .286 .354 .883 #2 .368 .399 1.073

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 05:17 PM) I wouldn't call Broadway a "nothing" prospect I would, his only value is to us at this point. He isnt one of our top three, he doesnt have great stuff and he isnt major league ready.

wow, the yankees would be getting hosed on that deal. Their top pitching spec, one of the best players in baseball, and a serviceable OF for a pretty good starter, a good defensive 3B with back problems and a nothing prospect.

QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 03:27 PM) i think people are frustrated by the lack of upgrades that have been made so far this year. going into the off season we needed 1) A Backup Catcher 2) Middle Relief 4) A new leadoff person Fixed for accuracy. I do not agree that we need to get rid of BA, or Uribe. You are talking about 2 players who play GG caliber defense, something that helps our pitching staff a great deal. As for middle relief, we made a trade that hopefully upgrades it, but at this point the price tag was too high for mediocre middle relief. Lead off man is a huge hole, but the market was much too high for basically slight upgrades over what we have. Backup catcher isnt that huge of a deal to me, as AJ has proven that he can take a large load of games behind the plate, im sure KW will sign someone who will work for us. I would like to know what miracle trades/signings you may have had in mind to fix those "holes"

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 03:24 PM) It's going to be fun watching Floyd play the outfield at Wrigley. The guy just doesnt hit as well as people think he does. .324 OBP and .407 SLG for a corner OF'er who is supposed to hit for power? Maybe it was a down year for him, but i see the very clear signs of decline.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 03:23 PM) Ozzie and KW don't really care about OBP. They never have, never will. Ozzie would rather have his speed guy at the top of the order. The biggest reason this offense tanked in the 2nd half was due to the poor performances by many of our hitters against LHP, especially Thome and Iguchi. Adding a player or two that can mash LHP would really help, as there are amazing lefty pitchers in our division. Our offense really isnt the issue, even though its being attacked here, our pitching staff needs to improve for us to win the division. if you take our 2006 team and make them play the season 10 times, I believe last season would be one of the worst for the amount of talent we had.
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 03:01 PM) Why hasn't there been that much interest in Floyd this offseason? His knees are obviously very problematic, but you'd think some American League team, ala the Mariners who traded for Vidro, would take a flier on him as there designated hitter. Not only his knees, but he tore his achilles lat year, and even though he is a "name" guy, he really underproduces for someone who is supposed to be a power bat.
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 03:17 PM) Look at those Orioles. Remember when there wasn't a seat available for just about every game at Camden? Christ, what happened to that franchise? The funny thing is that the best Yankees team of that dynasty was actually OUTSPENT by the O's.

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) So that is what you meant when you said that you don't want the Sox to be like the Red Sox, Yankees or Mets. But the problem is that this strategy has led to World Series victories for the Red Sox once and the Yankees multiple times. Those teams won a lot of games and won the World Series because they had a hell of a lot of talent. If your strategy is trying to find magical chemistry with a bunch of cheaper players, you are lucky to get lightning in a bottle once. Well, the last realy yankees Dynasty was won by alot of homegrown talent, not quite with the "buy every player" mentality that has contributed to their shortcomings in the past few years. Cashman's main additions were: third baseman Scott Brosius, second baseman and leadoff man Chuck Knoblauch, outfielder Darryl Strawberry and starting pitcher "El Duque" Hernandez. In fact if you would like to do a comparison of payrolls during that last Yankees dynasty, it looks like this: 1998 1) Orioles - 71 million 2) Yankees - 64 million 3) Braves - 60 million 4) Indians - 60 million 5) Rangers - 55 million 6) Cardinals - 53 million 7) Mariners - 53 million 8) Red Sox - 52 million 9) Mets - 50 million 10) Cubs - 50 million 1999 1) Yankees - 89 million 2) Rangers - 82 million 3) Braves - 76 million 4) Indians - 74 million 5) Red Sox - 72 million 6) Mets - 72 million 7) Dodgers - 71 million 8) Orioles - 71 million 9) Diamondbacks - 71 million 10) Cubs - 56 million 2000 1) Yankees - 93 million 2) Dodgers - 91 million 3) Orioles - 84 million 4) Braves - 83 Million 5) Red Sox - 82 million 6) Mets - 80 million 7) Diamondbacks - 80 million 8) Indians - 77 million 9) Rangers - 71 million 10) Devil Rays - 65 million 2001 1) Yankees - 113 million 2) Red Sox - 110 million 3) Dodgers - 110 million 4) Mets - 94 million 5) Indians - 93 million 6) Braves - 92 million 7) Rangers - 89 million 8) Diamondbacks - 86 million 9) Cardinals - 79 million 10) Blue Jays - 77 million On thing alot of people forget is how scrappy and team oriented those Yankees teams were. It wasnt until alot of those guys retired that the Yankees starting buying superstarts by the bundle. The Red Sox 2004 team won with alot of role players and homegrown guys as well, their payroll in 2004 was 128 million, with Manny, Pedro, Nomar, Damon, Varitek, Nixon, Wakefield and a few others all receiving raises. They added Schilling at 12 million, Foulke at 7 million, and Ortiz (non-tendered) at 5 million. That was basically the "team" they bought in 2004.
