Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 10:39 AM) I love it when a major league GM works hard to make the AAA team better. If the Sox were a crappy team, then rebuilding by trading veterans for prospects would make sense. This team is one year from winning the WS and won 90 games last year. This team was ready to contend again and was likely to make it back to the playoffs. And he's having a fire sale which makes us worse in 2007 and set to contend in 2009...maybe. What fire sale? He traded a pitcher who we were going to lose to FA to make room for a younger, cheap starter who has the potential to have better results next year, and acquired 2 players who have the potential to be top of the rotation guys in the next year or two. That doesnt look like a firesale to me, it looks smart. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 10:26 AM) Who's this imaginary 5th starter people keep saying we have? If we traded Garland, I only count 4 guys we can legitimately say should be starting. Yeah, and if we trade Contreras and Vaz we only have 2, whats the point of bring up what ifs of stuff that isnt happening? -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 09:51 AM) The years of no 5th starter are about to return! Except we have 5 good starters. Im actually beginning to like this deal. We got a top young arm, who had some issues under a TERRIBLE coaching staff, and a top young pitching prospect, for no-fastball freddy who is basically a one year rental player for them. The last time the market went this way for arms, the smart thing to do was stock up young cheap pitching from within your system, which we now have done. Haeger, Broadway, MC, BMAC, Floyd and Gio is a nice young stable to have. -
Everyone who was clamoring for nothing but prospects should be happy with this. I, for one, who think spects are overrated, am not happy

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:41 PM) And how many games would Lofton and Floyd actually play for the Cubs? Apparently he forgot about the 2-7 hitters on the Sox. Let him be. -

QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:37 PM) Fathom I am truly upset that this trade couldn't wait. Surely there were other options. This is truly horrible. We are a third place team right now. Nothing more, and this trade does not make us better, as KW always contends he must do. Floyd is a major project, and truly will have a hard time in the AL if he can reach the majors again. I could care less about GIO. Thought he was overrated to begin with. To me he is nothing more than Jim parque. I simply cannot believe this is the best we could get. By the way I can't see KW running into this free agent market so I am sure he will use ht emoney to pay crede this year. I suppose the rebuilding has begun. Wow, if TQ came out to say crap about this trade, it REALLY makes me worse off. Ugh, come on Kenny. In an offseason where the flubs make some moves (not good ones) we make an even worse one, jesus. -

Lilly is being called a star pitcher by the cubune FWIW. This deal has another deal written all over it, its just I hate losing a deal like this. Given that these are now probably 2 nice arms in our system to compliment Haeger and Broadway, but still, this deal sucks bad. -

QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:00 PM) that would be bad. Two starting pitchers for an often injured outfielder????? Often injured huh? Two freak injuries doesnt exactly make him oft-injured. -

Meh, I dont see how this trade helps us this year unless we are flipping them for something else. -

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:43 PM) What the f*** is the point of trading for guys that we already had? KW was supposed to rape some team this year, not bring back former players. Well, he just got two solid trading chips in young pitching and saved 10 million bucks. I think that he has something else cooked up. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:41 PM) Tampa is after young pitching, and Gio is pretty much very similar to B-Mac in terms of overall talent level. Unless they get a better offer from elsewhere for either, I still think something could get done here. Thats what im thinking DB. We didnt have the top spects to make a deal before, now we just got two nice ones. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:40 PM) Comcast just said Rowand is involved. Oh s***, so we just got Rowand, Gio and Floyd for Garcia? -

QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:37 PM) Tampa wanted McCarthy for Rocco, and they're not trading Crawford. Floyd at one time was thought to have the stuff to be a number 1 starter, and Gio has the ability as well. -

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) So it's basically Gio being substituted for Rowand. I don't really see how this makes a lot of sense UNLESS, these 2 are then flipped to the D-Rays for say Carl Crawford or Rocco Baldelli. It's nice to have Gio back in the organization though for the moment because I rate him highly. We are either doing something with that cash, or flipping both of these guys somewhere. This cant be the deal. This doesnt help us this year at all. -

He is obviously either signing someone else, or dealing another pitcher somewhere nad using that cash to pay for their inflated salary. This deal looks like BS on the surface -

I think the market wasnt there or something, cause this deal is bulls*** IMO. There better be someone else involved. -

wow, i hope not. Talk about KW giving in to not market value. -
Great move for ATL. The cubs would be wise to trade theirs as well, thought they cant.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:14 PM) No doubt...Manny, but we don't have to give up anything to get Bonds (well I guess some of you all assume we'd be giving up our souls to sign Bonds). But if we got Manny I'd be the first person to own his jersey (considering he may be my favorite non White Sox). I agree with you, Manny is one of the best hitters of all time, a true professional hitter. He would immediately make our lineup the best in baseball hands down. Think about opposing pitchers trying to face this: 2. Gooch 3. Dye 4. Thome 5. Manny 6. Konerko 7. AJP 8. Crede That is a ridiculously hard stretch of players to pitch to.

QUOTE(TheOcho @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 04:06 PM) So would you rather have him or Ramirez? manny in a heartbeat.

The cubs have outed Dempster as the closer, and Sweet Lou has announced that the new closer is....... Kerry Wood!!!!!! MRI stock just went up.
