OK, I guess I get to be the first note on this thread!

This doesn't need its own thread, but another unitentional comedy tidbit from the Cubs. All we've heard in response to the Prior injury rumors is that he's fine and he'll be pitching off the mound this week.

Well, now the Cubs are pimping the fact that he pitched off the mound today... which is true, except if you look a little further into he only threw 20 "pitches" and it was only at 50%, which IMO is just being technical by saying it was off a mound.

Of course I had to break the real news to 2 of my Cub fan friends who just heard/read he threw off the mound today, so the Cubs are getting the spin they want out of this.

Bucs to announce extension for Wilson

Three-year deal would keep shortstop with Pirates through '09

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pittsburgh Pirates will announce at a 4 p.m. ET press conference that they have agreed to terms with shortstop Jack Wilson on a long-term contract extension.

The deal is believed to be for three years and $20 million and will keep Wilson under contract with the Pirates through the 2009 season.

Why the hell is Jack Wilson getting $20 million over 3 years and why are the Pirates paying it?

He is excellent defensively and at a primary position you look for it. The best thing they ever did and will ever do is lock up bay though. Wouldn't be surprised to see them do the same with duke in a couple years.

Still, for the Pirates, that's an awful lot of money when they don't have much to move around. $7 million a year for a defensive guy, when their team was 3rd from the bottom in runs scored last year in the NL, ahead of only San Fran (no Barry) and Washington? The Padres had a better offense than them. Think about this...they're paying him a fair chunk more than we're paying Jermaine Dye to hit 30 home runs for us.

Is there any chance that they're back-loading this deal with the expectation that they'll pay like $5 million a year for the first 2 years and then trade him before he becomes a FA? That's the only way this even comes close to making sense to me. He'd have gotten quite a bit less in arbitration had it come to that, and they still would have been able to trade him before he hit the FA market to some team in need of defensive help.

Wilson's defense is great but he's still not worth almost $7 million per year. They may as well sign a defensive specialist like Neifi Perez to start at SS then. Neifi will earn $2.5 million per year over the next two seasons and he's not even worth that much. Wilson's bat is just as pathetic as Neifi's. Neifi (.681 OPS) was actually better offensively than Wilson (.662 OPS) last season.

Jack Wilson (career stats): .263 AVG | .304 OBP | .368 SLG | .672 OPS

Neifi Perez (career stats): .270 AVG | .301 OBP | .380 SLG | .681 OPS

Without his great glove, Wilson would be one of the worst regulars in baseball. At least Neifi is supposedly coming off the bench for the Cubs. There's no way Jack Wilson is actually worth $20 million over 3 years, regardless of how good his defense is. If true, this is a horrible signing by the Pirates.

Never said it is a good reason why... just the only thing i can think of. It is also likely that they don't have a short stop that they see likely to fill the void ( from the minors) anytime soon. If not the pirates it would have been some other team signing him to nearly the same deal... that is how much teams/mostly anyone like his glove. Defense saves alot more runs than people realize, especially up the middle. Saying that... they are still s***ty offensively.

Pirates sign Jack Wilson to three-year extension

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Shortstop Jack Wilson agreed to terms on a three-year, $20 million contract extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

The Nationals signed Royce Clayton to a minor league deal and Jack Wilson gets $20 million, lol.

Do you say that because you think they are comparable defenders? Royce clayton does not move to his left, right, or back. He has always been brutal to watch and i do not know how he has the reputation as being one of the top defenders in the league.

Nah, just comparing salaries. Clayton is an old fart now. I do think that Neifi is a comparable defender to Wilson at SS (Wilson is still a bit better) but he is getting paid $5 million over the next 2 seasons. $20 million over 3 seasons for Wilson is just flat-out ludicrous. Defensive specialists with no bats should not earn almost $7 million per season.

Especially since in 2005, the Pirates total payroll was $38 million. Depending on how much else they've increased salary this offseason with Marte, Kearns, etc., that puts him at making roughly 15-16% of the Pirates total salary in 2006. That's a higher percentage than ARod on the Yankees, Manny Ramirez on the BoSox, Konerko or Thome on the White Sox, etc. I think Chavez on the A's gets into that territory, but there aren't that many more like that.

I think you meant Burnitz, not Kearns. Kearns is with the Reds.

Anyways, can't Freddy Sanchez play SS? Trade Jack Wilson, put Freddy Sanchez at SS, and put Jose Castillo at 2B. The Pirates shouldn't be spending this kind of money on a guy like Wilson and spending too much money on old rejects like Jeromy Burnitz. Either spend more money on good players or play your prospects. The Royals have a similar problem but they are even worse. They barely play any prospects and continue to sign washed-up bums instead.

Giants extend Winn through 2009

Bay Area native follows strong close to '05 with new contract

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Giants have signed outfielder Randy Winn to a three-year, $23.25 million contract extension, keeping him with the club through 2009.

The Giants just love their old players, don't they? The sad thing is that Winn is one of their younger players at 31.

Soxtalk's favorite writer answers the ol' Scott Podsednik question:

Steve (Chicago): Why do you hate Scott Podsednik so much?

Dayn Perry: No hate involved, but a corner outfielder who slugs .315 away from his hitter-friendly home digs isn't doing his job. No matter how dirty his uniform pants are.

Three more guys dropping out of the WBC:

Majewski, Leiter to replace Wagner, Sabathia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- New York Mets closer Billy Wagner and Cleveland pitcher C.C. Sabathia withdrew Wednesday from the U.S. roster for the World Baseball Classic and were replaced by Washington right-hander Gary Majewski and Yankees left-hander Al Leiter.

Leiter becomes the fourth player from the Yankees on the 30-man roster, joining shortstop Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez and center fielder Johnny Damon.

Two other Nationals are on the team: closer Chad Cordero and catcher Brian Schneider.

The roster for the first round, initially announced Feb. 14, has to be finalized by noon ET Wednesday.

"Although I would love to pitch in the inaugural World Baseball Classic and am proud to represent my country, I will not be ready to pitch in a competitive-game environment when play begins on March 7," Sabathia said in a statement released by the Indians

Report: Guerrero withdraws from WBC

Vladimir Guerrero, who left Los Angeles Angels earlier this week after three cousins died in a car crash, announced Wednesday that he will not participate in the World Baseball Classic, MLB.com reported.

"I feel mentally that I cannot go out there and play to the level and compete for my country," the Angels right fielder said through an interpreter. "I don't want to cheat anybody."

Three males, all first cousins, were killed in the Sunday crash, said Tim Mead, vice president of communications for the Angels. The deceased -- Fernando Guerrero, 26; Salvador Carmona, 25; and Henry Guerrero, 23 -- were all buried Monday in the Dominican Republic. Few other details about the wreck were available.

According to MLB.com, a fourth cousin, Wilmer Paulino, survived the crash but remains hospitalized in San Cristobal, where he has undergone surgery on an ankle and both legs. No further details are available.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
