QUOTE(chisox08 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:28 PM) im looking at tomorrows matchup here, and, in my opinion im thinking it will be a pitchers duel. although, ever since the all star break i have had no faith in this team, i think if we beat santana (and for some illogical reason i think we will) it may be the fire that lights their asses and gets them on a much needed roll. wut could be better than beating someone as dominating as santana? any thoughts and/or scenarios for tomorrows game? id feel better about our chances if alfonso soriano was playing left instead of podsednik

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:23 PM) I really can't blame Ozz. Its hard to listen to the stats that say Javy can't get guys out late in the games, when he throws so dominant and had barely been hit for 5 innings. i thought he handled vazquez fine tonight, i thought javy only made two really bad pitches tonight...the change to morneau was left up, and he absolutely hung a slider to mauer and got lucky that mauer swung and missed....again, ive said it like 10 times....i still have 0 idea why anyone pitches to mauer in teh situation they did

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:19 PM) I had to follow the game online tonight, and was comforted knowing Ozzie had Cotts warming up in the 6th inning. Will someone please explain to me why he wasn't brought in to face Morneau? eh...i thought letting javy pitch to him was ok...its 2 hours after the fact and i still cannot comprehend how you can ever pitch to anyone batting .380 with 1st base open and 2 outs and guys on second and third....im honestly mystified by that decision....we need to be fair in this city and realize that dusty would be getting a new one torn after doing something like that....ozzie needs to too

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:07 PM) That's probably been there for 7 hours. it went up about na hour ago...but they had been talkin about it all night

joe mauer vs. lefthanded pitchers: .366 BA, .421 OBP Michael Cuddyer vs. Right handed pitchers: .243 BA, .339 OBP cotts did his job by getting the 2 outs....the right move was to get brandon or riske to face cuddyer

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:01 PM) Ozzie is managing the same way he did last year. He's going to do some ridiculous things but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt after 2005. We've had a number of players underachieving, or just simply playing like spiff, so I'm going to put the blame on them. this is the first time i really have come on here and said that ozzie is to blame for something...but the decision to pitch to mauer in the 6th was one of the most blatant examples of mismanaging ive seen in quite some time.....3-1 count, runners on 2nd and third, a guy hitting .380 at the plate and you pitch to him???

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 06:09 PM) The Sox have long said they aren't planning on skipping the 5th spot. They know there starters have been worked hard and they aren't about to put anymore work on them. As far as Brandon goes, no, I don't know that he could pitch better than Javy/Freddy because its will take Brandon about a month to get up to being able to throw 100 pitches so for a months time we risk having to go to the pen before the 5th inning which puts us in a bind for not only that game, but for future games as well. i agree, but i was thinking about this....if KW wants to keep brandon so much, its certainly not to keep him in hte pen next year, so, as is agreed by just about everyone, a starter is gonna go this offseason..but what will they get for him? maybe they can get soriano right now....if we can supplant brandon for garcia/javy and soriano for pods thats a definite +....of course this is all speculation on my part, but i think its tangible and something that would improve the club

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 06:02 PM) Jason ... why would the White Sox trade one of their starters? They finally have the bullpen set up, and in McCarthy a very good insurance policy. Pods and prospects makes sense but trading a starter goes against everything KW has talked about all season. but not contrary to what we have heard in teh rumors....the fact is this....mccarthy in all probability will do an equal job to vazquez or garcia...the sox have enough off days the rest of the year to skip spots in the rotation where a 5th starter only really has to pitch like 3 times before rosters expand in sept.....the As are in first, so zito probably isnt goin anywhere, the giants are .5 out, so schmidt is staying, willis probably wont be dealt.....therefore the best names on the market are livan hernandez, rodrigo lopez and freddy/vazquez....a team like the mets will be willing to part with good prospects (most certainly not milledge or pelfrey, but probably humber etc) and those guys could be moved for soriano
-
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 05:51 PM) yea, from what i hear the Nationals are asking too much (aka, McCarthy and other players) where did you hear this stuff?
-
QUOTE(AbeFroman @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 05:49 PM) Practically every rumor, including the one from ESPN that started this whole deal, was that McCarthy was the central piece of the deal for soriano. With six full days left to go before the deadline, this seems pretty logical. Most of the speculation here is that if KW says McCarthy's not going anyplace, the deal probably isn't going to happen. As always, we're riding the ebb and flow of limited information we possess. So yes the deal is not absolutely dead.... but based on what we've heard all day, it seems like the Nats want McCarthy. If there's nine hours left before the deadline, I'd feel like there is a chance we could nail the Nats on some hybrid deal not involving soriano... but that's not the case. Edit DAA84: I really couldn't say it on the phone at the time.... also, vanderbilt sucks at the game of footbal this may be getting to complicated, but williams could certainly deal vazquez to the mets or bosox for a guy like humber and another prospects, then ship humber and that prospect to the nats with someone like broadway or sweeney for soriano....washington gets some good prospects....sox keep mccarthy and put him in the rotation and get soriano, mets/other team gets their SP.....
-
QUOTE(GoRowand33 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 05:47 PM) is there any chance of a vazquez/pods deal for soriano or am I just dreaming? if kw eats alot of vazquezs salary and sends a good prospect like sweeney i would think so....maybe they are waiting til after vazquez's start to announce something like this but all of those possibilities seem unlikely
-
hey fathom, i know your source said that the soriano jerseys were to be ordered earlier....does that assume that they are not now and the deal may be off?
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:54 PM) Jim Rose just said that Washington wanted too much and the Soriano to the White Sox deal is off. wow....all this for nothing...though i really question how jim rose would know this before anyone else

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) Tonight may be quick, but this deal was pretty much done relatively early today from what I know, especially since the minor league affiliates we semi aware of the deal. id guess its tonight, because the sox said a move would be made before the minny game to bring the roster to 25, otherwise id think they would wait t il after tonights games to make the deal -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) That's one of the reasons why they draft guys like Broadway and McCullough, they're those types of pitchers who project to be solid locks to make the bigs and more often than not put up excellent numbers in the minors, making them perfect trading chips. I won't shed a tear if L. Broadway meets up with L. Broadway later today. exactly....one of the greatest reasons for drafting a college pitcher who has faced the competition that broadway and mculloch did at TCU and UT, is that they are ready to pitch in A ball, and only a half year or so away from AA.....that gives em an instant track record in the middle minor leagues, that other teams will wnat to see...

QUOTE(BDavisFutureHOF @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:43 PM) If this goes through -- See ya later Mr. Fields i dont know about that .....zimmerman is gonna be the 3rd basemen there for years

QUOTE(illinilaw08 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:40 PM) Is it possible we could flip him for Ervin Santana? But of course in that scenario, who goes to the bullpen? I dont know, I'm just throwing this out there. its a good line of thought....i think the angels are the lone team that would give us valuable pieces, especially pitching wise, for soriano.....i still would think we would hang on to him though
-
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) WSCR 4:30 pm update says the White Sox are exploring deals for both Soriano and Lee with the intent of flipping them. Meaning, one or the other, not acquiring/flipping both. For what it's worth. i just cant see why....the only teams that are gonna want soriano are contenders, and no contender is gonna be willing to deal us (or anyone) pitching.......

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:29 PM) well i guess that explains it some.... and dont get me wrong I was a big fan of Lumdsen too he just wasnt my favorite as he was for a lot of other posters here. Personally I think Whistler has a higher ceiling and with his recent surge he is starting to show he is a real prospect again... also our minors seems to be stacked with SP's its the hitting prospects we seem to have very little of. when will mcdougal be in a uni? tomorrows game? -
QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:31 PM) You deserve a suspension. i was just about to say that

QUOTE(G&T @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) So was signing Loaiza and an injured Frank Thomas. This move replaces Zito for a couple years (though not particularly well) and gives them an offensive piece for this year since Thomas is not always healthy. actually i believe the words billy beane used when he signed thomas, was "hes the perfect portrait for our beliefs".....and the loaiza signing also made sense because billy beane knows the value of a 200+ inning pitcher
-
QUOTE(G&T @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) I'll go out on a limb and say an AL team. My reasoning is that it might be for a pitcher, and no AL team wants NL pitching. Soriano and Garcia/Vazquez for Zito? Iffy move for next year, but as long as we are speculating... thats the anti-billy beane move

QUOTE(bmags @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) seattle, eh? is that kid untouchable? Is that RF untouchable? Are we getting a whole lot less for him than what is swirling in my head. *Head explodes* yeah i cant understand who we would get from seattle....it really doesnt make a whole lot of sense....giving up brandon just to block the tigers is way too much to give up...

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:11 PM) To quote Paul DePodesta: "The variance between the best and worst fielders on the outcome of a game is a lot smaller than the variance between the best hitters and worst hitters." I'm in the middle of an Albert Belle-esque study on how many more runs Alfonso Soriano brings to the team with his bat than grants the opposition with his glove. Methinks he is far more valuable in terms of runs scored than his defense would ever hint at. depo is right....especially for a leftfielder

QUOTE(beleiveinbrian44 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) if the trade does go down, espn said it would likely be brandon, they also said brian would play CF and pods would be 4th OF 4th OFer and designated pinch runner for thome/konerko
