QUOTE(TheHolyBovine @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) You terribly overrate Lumsden. He's 23 and in AA, so he's not exactly young for his level. His ERA is good (2.69), but it hides weak peripheral numbers. Three of the strongest predictors of future major league success for minor league pitchers are: 1) Strikeout rate 2) K/BB ratio 3) HRs allowed Despite Lumsden's supposedly awesome stuff, his k rate/9 IPs is well below avergae (5.23) for a "big time" prospect. His K/BB rate is also below average: 1.8 Finally, he's given up 9 HRs in 123.2 IPs, which is just OK. We did not trade away Scott Kazmir, here. Cortes has a 4.01 ERA in low-A ball, so he shouldn't even enter into the duscussion. Great trade KW: Shipping away an overrated minor league for a major league ready reliever with great stuff, who is under our control through 2009. that HR rate....is actually quite good.....your arguement should cneter more around the fact that the hoover met plays like petco...and thats could be a reason for the low HRs

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 03:59 PM) Scott Podsednik has stopped stealing bases and when he does, he's mediocre. exactly....when was the last time pods was that real "sparkplug" .....all star game last year ish....soriano has stolen almost as many bases and has hit almost as many homers as thome...in a gigantic park....not to mention his obp has been on the rise this year....its a massive upgrade

Sox get Mike MacDougal for Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 03:57 PM) We are getting a good arm, but we are giving up two of our best arms in the system, one being a low A righty who has a low to mid 90's sinking fastball (Cortes) and the other being our top lefty prospect in Tyler Lumsden. Both have a good deal of upside, although Cortes is still considered extremely raw, but he has a very very good build. MacDougal is an insanely talented arm with some serious arm trouble but is under the Sox control for a few years. Haven't been able to sound off on anything as I'm trying to get things updated, but I've been told that Lummy has already been informed of the move and will be reporting to Wichita (AA affiliate) while Cortes is going to be going to a former Sox affiliate (Burlington). the development of phillips and haeger make both expendable in the next 2 years.....beyond 2 years, you can fill those same spots via draft...i like this deal -

QUOTE(Felix @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 03:45 PM) Acquired pitcher Mike MacDougal from the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/transactions everyone is gonna spiff that it was lumsden, but macdougal has an arm just like jenks and thornton...that back end of our pen throws gasssss -
QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) I think he was, but I could be wrong. Does anyone remember how highly Joe Borchard was ranked? You don't want to know. Highly ranked prospects OFTEN don't pan out. That's why you trade them to make your team better when you have the chance to win the WS this year. borchard was as high as 6 as far as i can remember

im rather sure, but not 100% sure that reed was never top 10....i think he was always like 30 something

QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:32 PM) Not to be a contrarian here but don't you usually bench some of your A guys when a day game follows a night game? yeah, but its just so frustrating to see widger facing virtually every lefthanded pitcher we face

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:30 PM) I'm going off legitimate rumblings and rumors from major publications, not just pulling spiff out of my ass like most trade purposals. yeah i know, i didnt mean to sound to like yours was unrealistic, just mine...thats why i rewrote my post a few posts down....sorry

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:28 PM) I would, too. But I'm doubting it happens. I'm confused what to root for with Garcia. On one hand, if he has a fluke good outing, he'll likely increase his trade value a little, but yet that also makes KW/Ozzie more likely to give him more chances and not trade him. how bout fields + vazquez/garcia + broadway for abreu and gordon.... put mccarthy back in the rotation, send gload packing and have podsednik be the designated pinch runner with abreu playing left and leading off..... i guess that type of deal really only works on xbox

QUOTE(Greg Hibbard @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:16 PM) June 8-19, New York Yankees go 3-8 vs. Oakland, Boston, Cleveland, Washington and Philadelphia May 28-June 8, Detroit Tigers go 2-8 vs. Cleveland, NYY, Boston, and Chicago May 29-June 15, Boston Red Sox go 5-10 vs. Toronto, Detroit, NYY, Texas and Minnesota We just got off of a 2-7 stretch against the 3 of the top 5 teams in baseball. Thank god this stretch is over, because it was seriously a nightmare. Remember, we had a 1-8 stretch of similar baseball against the contenders in the middle of last august. Here are the facts: All four of the best AL teams have serious weaknesses, even in their pitching staffs. All four of the best AL teams have some holes in their lineups. All four of the best AL teams have 1 or 2 shaky bullpen arms. All four teams are really close, and over some stretches, some are going to look better than others. Now, the issues that need to be resolved: 1) Widger, DFA now. We all know this, obviously. Anyone would be better. 2) We apparently need a leadoff hitter who can play left field. Seriously, I think this cannot be stressed enough. Podsednik is going south in a hurry and he's adding very little to the team, and Ozuna's value has just about peaked out. 3) We need to run Garcia out of town and start McCarthy. If we do those three things, I really think the rest of the problems will take care of themselves. good post...the most important thing is that we jump all over texas only i fixed your one mistake

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) Stop being pessimistic, everything is alright. I repeat EVERYTHING is ALRIGHT! seriously...i am pissed off about this loss, but we played like spiff, on the road, and still had a chance to win each game....it pisses me off, but im not worried yet

QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 10:50 PM) Didn't see the game cuz of work, but I like the point as of late that Javy should ditch his curve and stick with fastball, change, slider. Seems he got hurt with the curve tonight from what I read and in the past. Just hangs it too much. Hawk said it lkast week and Detroit announcers made a mention tonight. i think javy threw maybe 7 curve balls .....2 hung and were ripped by pudge for a single and a double i think (maybe two singles, cant remember, either way both balls were pounded) 1 was hung and pounded by monroe for the slam...1 inge caught off the end of the bat and popped up...a few others were in the dirt or hit for outs

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:50 PM) The thing is, Pods is even more worthless against the Tigers because he's not going to be stealing against IRod. yeah seriously, i cant remember the last time podesdnik has been on base, and ive been like wow...look at how much of a headache he is to the opposing pitcher, probably before he hurt his groin pre allstar game last year
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:45 PM) If we're going to fix the spiff starting pitching Vazquez and/or Garcia need to be replaced, that's basically what i'm getting at. i really think it should be freddy, i can see vazquez getting better from here, but unless freddy hits 93-95 consistently, hes not gonna get any better QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:47 PM) Widger's playing tomorrow, according to Mike North. pablo probably too....not thats its a bad thing, i have gotten so sick of watching podsednik contribute next to nothing to this team
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:28 PM) Mackowiak just pulled up at the end. I saw him do the same thing in the Boston series that lead to a big inning. Rongey thinks Vazquez pitched well. LOL i hate rongey, and i dont think vazquez pitched well, but im not about to say he pitched poorly either....dont get me wrong he needs to get his ass in gear and put hitters away, but i will feel better about javy going into his next start than i did going into his start today

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 09:16 PM) They've been saying that ever since he left Montreal 2 1/2 years and 3 teams ago. He is an average pitcher. His stuff is better than that but it hasn't translated to wins, and chances are it never will. i would agree with you, except the fact that his HR #s are profoundly down, which was the knock on him coming into this year...its amazing to me his inability to put hitters away consistently when hes up in the count...something tells me hes making good enough pitches in the hitters counts, but for some reason hes getting beat in pitchers counts...i think hes to blame for some of it, but personally i think some of it for vazquez has been plain bad luck....i know ill get ripped for saying that, but thats what i think....now a guy like freddy is a whole different story
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) Yeah, his slugging percentage is still high this year but his OBP has dropped big time, I guess he's completely lost all plate discipline. Kinda sad if you ask me. he never really had plate discipline...his ability to make contact has just decreased
-
this is a ring of bad luck IMO for vazquez...he hangs a breaker to monroe and its hit out...two batters later, he does it again to inge and its popped up...sabremetrically, vazquez actually has the best peripherals of any starter on our staff...a good indication that 1.) he will get better, and 2.) hes been rather unlucky...lots of hits, but still high K-rate, low BB, and after tonights slam 11 homers is actually pretty damn good at this point of the season, especially considering that the knock on him was the homers he has given up...that said, javy needs to trust his fastball more...he tied hitters up and had them swinging and missing at his fastball all night.... of the 7 Hits... pudge: hanging curveabsolutely scalded pudge: ditto monroe: ditto ordonez: bleeder on a nice fastball on the outside part of the plate polanco: IF hit on a fastball he got jammed on guillen: sawed off for a bloop single with the fastball... Javy has 3 decent pitches, fastball, slider and change....all he has to do is flash teh curve once in a while in the dirt to show the hitters he has it, and to give them a change of pace...if he locates it better hell be fine
-
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 05:06 PM) I have only seen him pitch in the AAA All-Star game and he looked damn good. i honestly think he could do better than Garcia, Vaz and Garland, #'s wise. I could see him with a 4.50 ish ERA, which is better than our back 3 and Mark right now. Obviously, he won't get the opportunity to start for the Sox so we can see what he's got, so I agree with you Jim, that he will probably be traded. ive never seen him pitch...but from what i hear hes a similar pitcher to buerhle, and therefore, on a prospect level, to a guy i have seen a ton of...jeremy sowers.....he had better #s in AAA than phillips and has had some trouble at the big league level, so im not all that sure hed be better than those guys

ESPN Report: Kenny Looking at Scott Linebrink
daa84 replied to SadChiSoxFanOptimist's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 07:51 PM) If we were to get Cameron and Linebrink, I would have no problem sticking Cameron in LF for Pods. He K's a ton, but his OBP is about 10 points lower than Pods. Our OF D would also improve by leaps and bounds with Cameron-Anderson-Dye. i havent seen cameron play in a while, but if his OF defense is where it was 2 years ago (which is unlikely) id have him in center....one of the most unheralded defensive OFers of the last 10 years...in his prime he was just shy of andruw and hunter -

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 06:45 PM) I dont see why they would trade their best setup guy when they are in first place, especially after they traded otsuka in the offseason. Levine is never right anyway. ive actually heard that they were looking to deal linebrink as well....i cant remember where i heard it, but its not bull that the padres would deal him found this.... http://torontosun.com/Sports/Columnists/El...16/1686900.html -
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 09:11 AM) ... of being traded? Hah, just kidding. Then again ... maybe not. you are right though...he has a great shot at getting traded as well...its kind of funny, but haeger and phillips domination over the IL this year may turn to really help our big league team out through a trade, when coming into the year, we wouldnt have been able to get much major league talent for them

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 06:34 AM) After a year off due to injury, his numbers are great. It's good to see him bounce back like he has, low K numbers and all. i think haeger has an excellent chance
