How many strikeouts per game did the Red Sox average before July 3rd and how many after? Essentially unchanged — the offense is striking out at the same rate. Before July 3 (games 1–85, through the July 1 loss to Washington): 698 strikeouts in 85 games = 8.21 per game (22.0% of plate appearances) July 3 onward (games 86–113, through Aug 5): 228 strikeouts in 28 games = 8.14 per game (21.4% of PA) So a difference of about 0.07 K/game — noise. Whatever turned the season around (they've gone 25-3 in that stretch) it wasn't contact. The gains show up elsewhere: they're scoring roughly 5.6 runs per game since July 3 versus about 4.2 before, with a big jump in slugging. Same number of strikeouts, much more damage on the balls they do put in play.

I am going to think of this as a positive. The rest of this game will be a grind against a rowdy crowd. This is probably as close as a playoff game as these boys have faced up until this point. Lets grind out a win.

I know this is shitty because there is no evidence but I've learned from the Steroid Era. Wilson Contreras is 34 years old. He should be declining; however lets look at his current season. Wow! What a great season. When is the last time Wilson Contreras slugged over 500? He did it once his age 27 season in 2019! That makes sense to me. When is the last time he OPS over 900? Never has done it. Now, I hate pooping on somebody's success. However, Im a little skeptical of the drastic improvement being done at age 34.

He walked three in four innings tonight. I know it's one night. So let's look at how he did in the big leagues when he was up. 44 innings with 21 walks. Good for 4.26/9. Not great. From what I remember, guys were able to foul balls off, extend at-bats, thus leading to more walks.
