QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 04:14 PM) Great call. I was going to be the lone voice for George Strait's Somewhere Down in Texas I got lucky to run across that Sheppard album. I started searching for a version of "As Time Goes By' that I would like, as I always thought it was great song but could never find an acceptable version. I heard Sheppard's, then checked out the rest of the album. When I'm in the right mood, I love to listen to it.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 11:54 PM) One other note on the all-foam mattresses such as the Tempurpedic.... 1. I didn't like them because while they conform to your body, they do so to a degree it is hard to move around in them. I felt like I had to swim to get out of it and it was very hard to roll over. 2. I do hear a lot of reports that they sleep very hot, so if you tend to sweat at all when you sleep, it will be worse with these. The way to help combat this is to buy better sheets 400TC or above and keep the room you sleep in cooler. So basically to stay comfortable, you have to spend even more money. That said, I know people that swear by them. I have a 2 inch temperpedic type pad on top of a spring mattress. I highly recommend it.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) Aside from the fastball and the occasional slider, what other pitches does he have? As far as I can recall that's all I've seen him throw, and some brief googling of scouting reports didn't turn up any mention of other pitches. I honestly don't know, and never said that he did throw anything else. I was thinking along more generic terms than specifically about Matt. I guess I could have worded my post better. Still, hearing that someone in the pen is a two pitch pitcher and can't start because of that is very common around here, yet while in the pen that's exactly what they should be. If Matt was given notice he'd get a shot at the rotation at the end of the year, I'm sure he could develope something by spring training.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 11:08 PM) Matt Thornton simply doesn't have the "stuff" of a starter. Out of the bullpen, he is coming in there with a bit of a funky delivery and bringing gas. You just can't get used to how fast the ball comes out of his hand in an inning or two, and then on occasion he changes speeds and can be pretty dangerous, but for the most part, he seems to be a 1+ pitch pitcher. He is that style that will work well out of the bullpen, but would have a lot of difficulty as a starter just because people could adapt to him after 6-7 innings. Pitchers are one or two pitch pitchers out of the pen because it's hammered into their head not to get beat on your third best pitch. Which is as it should be, but that doesn't mean they don't have the capability to be a good starter because they don't use more than two pitches out of the pen.

Take it easy guys. Don't let this little spat get blown out of proportion. -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 09:50 PM) Matt's far too important in the pen. That sums it up nicely. Matt may very well be a damn good starter if given the chance, but as of now we need him right where he is.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 03:00 PM) Well you just have bad taste. LOL ... Iverson wasn't going to do s*** for Philly from here on out and they get two 1st round picks. He'll help Denver but it may be too little too late after the Melo Yellow suspension. He may keep them in the thick of things until the suspension is over. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 02:58 PM) Mee too, got it half off at the store as they ALWAYS discount mattresses, its a given. My bed is better than any other bed I have ever slept in, including many top resorts and hotels in the US. Go for the quality, because it is one of the few things you will use everyday of your life. You spend one third of your life in bed .... sleeping. Then there are us lucky ones.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 02:45 PM) Yeah if memory serves me correctly the "800" popped up when they started creating a million area codes around Chicagoland. It originally was just the 588-2300 when all of Chicago was a 312 area code and it didn't matter. Now a days even the Chicago version has the 800 in the jingle. Thanks Mike. I thought so, but then I thought I might be going crazy. LOL

What the hell. I'm going to throw this out there. If you enjoy the timeless classics like As Time Goes By or Fly Me To The Moon then the album by T. G. Sheppard called 'Classic Love Songs' is great. It is very richly orchestrated and Sheppard sings the tunes without the Sinatra type flair. 'In other words' he sings the songs as they were written without trying to jazz them up. If you like the old standards, give it a listen.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 02:35 PM) They are still played today, and the number is 800-588-2300 Yes they are played today ... even here in western KY. But what I want to know is do I actually remember those old ads or am i confusing them with something else? In other words, I'm saying I remember that number without the 1-800 part of it. Am I nuts or was that an old Chicago area/WGN type commercial?
-
I am either experinecing de'javu or this is an actual memory. Empire Carpets has a national commercial on TV that give the number as 800-588-2300 .... My question is wasn't that 588-2300 number a Chicago based commercial back in the 60's and 70's, along with the jingle, for the same company. It rings a bell with me like Hudson 3 - 2700. Am I crazy are was this a very frequently played ad in Chicago back in the day.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:57 PM) Actually, Wells has had only two good seasons out of six. He's been inconsistent in his career, far more so than guys with similar contracts (Beltran, Soriano). I understand where you are coming from Rock, but I don't think it is even a question when you consider one guy is making 6 figures while another is making 8. Rios has a career OSP of .762 --- Wells had a .762 OPS 5 years ago and the rest have all been superior since then. Sorry but Rios in no Vernon Wells. QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 02:11 PM) Rios has a career OSP of .762 --- Wells had a .762 OPS 5 years ago and the rest have all been superior since then. Sorry but Rios in no Vernon Wells. Actually, I retract that staement. Rios may turn out to be quite a ballplayer. It's a gamble, but so is Wells' contract in comparison.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:54 PM) We're just saying, based on what information we have, that we think its likely Gore would have done better. We do have s*** to base it on, its not rhetoric at all - its educated guessing. What's the harm? I believe Scott Podsednik can be the AL MVP this year ... based on an educated guess. It's as legitimate of a guess as you are making here.
-
QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) Well those are Northside's "assumptions" not mine. And I said I think Gore would have done better on the world stage. I don't really think of terrorist attacks on US soil as a indicator of this. I don't really assume anything. Like you say this is all speculation. If we had terrorist attacks on the US, what would the world stage matter to the American people. Not a damn thing.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:43 PM) Its not "nothing" either. Its educated guessing. We know what Bush's policies have been, and they have been (on the whole) disastrous. We know what Gores policies would probably have been like, in the general sense. Therefore, we can take some educated guesses. They are not pulled out of nothing like the flip of a coin. but they are, yes, guesses. It's pure speculation. That's all it is and all it ever will be. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:43 PM) Since we're doing this theoretical exercise, it's also entirely possible that with Mr. Gore in office, the 9/11 plot could have been disrupted by our governnment in the summer of 2001 before it happened, and thus either the Bin laden group would have had to arrange for a different operation to hit the U.S. before the U.S. would have taken action against them, or the Bin Laden group could have remained in Afghanistan working to destabilize other countries in the region without any real effort by the U.S. to stop them. And who knows what that could have done. A few more years of the results of the Iraq debacle, and I think that we'll actually have plenty to base it on. You guys are the ones doing this theoretical exercise. I'm saying that you don't have s*** to base it on other than pure rhetoric. Which doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:40 PM) Im not ignoring it, in fact I am in favor of many of those types of trades, and you can read that point of view in other threads. But in this case we just disagree. I dont see Rios in the same sentence as Wells, and I view as possibly the best or one of the best players at his position. We arent going to see eye to eye, because we have different views on the main argument. I cant see your side however, and I think both sides have their positives. And I agree with you. Wells superlatives are proven, Rios is pure speculation.
