Now that's a story lurking under the radar. Oh wait. Cleveland is west of the Hudson River, so it's just not important.

Whoa. I can see both sides of this issue and agree with certain points made from either perspective. I'm not going to get into the back and forth discussion other than to ask .... If someone has an avatar or signature that is offensive to another, regarldless of why it is offensive, why not just eliminate the offensive item? If a poster finds near nudity offensive, that person can choose not to open that thread. No problem. However, an offensive avatar will be found thoughout Soxtalk. It really all comes down to common courtesy. That's not a difficult concept to grasp, but one that seems to be forgotten all too often in this day and age.

*Official* College Basketball Thread

QUOTE(danman31 @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 10:34 PM) Anybody else see BC beat Cuse and then storm the court? BC is ranked higher (6 vs 9 for Cuse) and it was on their home floor yet their idiotic fans stormed the court. That's just stupid and sad. Boston fans. Typical. -
QUOTE(CubKilla @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 12:22 PM) Let's not compare an "extreme" skier to a Jonas Salk, Louis Pasteur, or Albert Einstein. It's the "living on the edge" frame of mind that I am referring. Different folks express that in different ways. In other words, people that called this guy stupid would probably also call Lewis & Clark stupid for thinking they could walk across the North American continent and get back to civilization in one piece.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) While this line is very much true, I find it kind of funny and full of irony. Part of the goal of the White Sox this offseason was to get rid of the power and add more on-base faster players who have good defense. Is that not EXACTLY what Harris is, especially against RHP? I know he's gone, and I know he has a questionable attitude...I just kind of think that is funny. It is ironic, isn't it? There has to be an issue with Harris's professionalism, or lack thereof, which has caused the Sox to sour on him. Barring unforeseen circumstances, I feel like Willie's days in a Sox uniform are numbered.

From what I saw in this thread, Youngstown came in here and decided to rub those rankings in our faces a little bit. You know what? There's nothing wrong with that! He comes in here knowing he's gonna be badly outnumbered and shouted down. Hook ... line ... sinker. You guys really took the bait. If you can't, as a group, defend the Sox adequately against a single Indians fan without resorting to name calling then you all need to just STFU. Our fearless leader and a couple of others did jump to save this thread and the dignity of Soxtalk. Did you guys notice what happened at that point? This turned into a serious discussion on the strengths and weakness of teams, with analysis of the Twins thrown in for good measure. A baseball discussion. What a concept. Some of you guys ought to give it a try sometime.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 10:37 AM) I think wino is suggesting the important part is that these side effects are occurring even when the drugs are "used as directed," within reccommended dosages. IF (and that's a big IF), alcohol were used at the so-called "recommended dosages," people wouldn't be dropping dead, developing psorosis and other alcoholism-related illnesses, etc., and we're told there may ven be slight benefits. Again, of course it's a big if. Even with hard liquor ads pulled years ago, the beer adult beverage industry is phenomenally irresponsible in their advertizing. All the "know when to say when" and "drink responsibly" tag lines in the world don't dilute the message that to be hip and young and popular and sexy tou need to drink brand X and lots of it. Wholly apart from the drug ad issue, I think alcohol advertizing has it's own problems. Tastes great!

The only reason Clinton "awakened" to the situation was to attempt to get the Lewinski situation off the front pages of the newspapers. I wouldn't say he followed up on it in any way shape or form ... considering that Bin Laden would have been handed to him if he was willing to accept the offer.

QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 09:58 AM) I think the reason is that since we have national elections, we ought to have a national election standard of who can and can not vote. If there is one standard applied equally to every federal level election, irregularities would be easier to find, police and avoid. The less the feds are involved in things, the better off we are, imho. However, I'll qualify that with this. If someone attempts to skew a federal election at the state or local level, they should have to answer for it in a federal court.

QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 10:09 AM) I can't see no damn rose. You'll see it. All you have to do is to lick a coffee table.

QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 09:03 AM) Wow. That difference in records is made even more amazing when you consider that not only did we have Thomas in the first 69 games that we played .565 ball, we DIDN'T have Freddy Garcia. The last 93 games, we had a far better rotation, but without Frank, it didn't seem to matter. He's far more important to this franchise than many people realize. And the fact that he had the 2nd most walks on the team despite not even playing half the season is sad. What a joke. We also had Magglio Ordonez for most of those games that we had Frank. We were missing both of them in most of the rest.

QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:25 AM) But he did have a ton of fat on him. His gut was at least 50+ inches. At Soxfest he claimed he was down to a 38 inch waist. I guess I should have clarified. Everyone knows Everett NEEDED to lose weight, so I assumed no one would think I was implying the "S" word with Jurassic.
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:21 AM) But Everett's weight loss was fat, due to his injuries. I think many guys will be looked at, esp those who have lost a lot of muscle weight. [Fat is another thing, like Joe Borowski, Adkins?]. I guess that's the nature of steriods. It casts suspicion on everyone Yes, and IRod was implicated by Canseco. I really hate that this is hanging over baseball like a thick smoke cloud, but they brought it upon themselves.

Another damn birthday thread? :headshake Nah. Just kidding. Happy birthday!

QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 07:11 AM) ProSportsDaily.com is quoting the Detroit Free Press (I think it was that paper) that Pudge Rodriquez has reported to spring training 20 pounds lighter. He must have worked out really hard this winter. So has Carl Everett.

Ozzie's just talking out his ass at this point. He's got 6 weeks to figure out what he wants to do. Things will change.

QUOTE(Pastime @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 04:52 AM) I would say that I'm stupid - but that would be redundant. I try to be helpful and nice, but just end up looking like a complete jackass. My life story in a nutshell, ladies and gentlemen. Oh man, can I relate to that!!!!!

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 19, 2005 -> 02:03 AM) I don't disagree with that, just allow that there is a mechanism by which those rights are lawfully reinstated in reasonable time. How about two years on the outside and no trouble, and you can vote again? You set yourself apart from the other dissenters in that you allow that ex-cons CAN prove their value to society. It seems that should be a given or we'd never bother ever releasing anyone back into society. Thanks. But why not let this be decided on the state level? Why does it always have to be a federal or nationwide policy?
-
QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 18, 2005 -> 11:23 PM) Just so you know. 49 states and the District of Columbia allow voting rights to be restored to ex-cons. 15 states have a specific process for it, and some of those states permanently disqualify specific people from be able to vote in their state again. Florida suspends all of your civil rights and you have to apply for them all, including your right to vote, after your sentence is completed. The only state in the Union that doesn't allow convicted felons to vote again is Alabama. The same state that rejected throwing out language that support segregationist policies in its state constitution last November. What the Democrats are asking for seems pretty simple. Create a national standard that does pretty much what 98% of the states in this country already do. Allow ex-cons to vote. Apples and oranges. They may grow in the same state, but they are two different things. All men are created equal. That does not mean that all men maintain their standing. Any US born citizen is taught about the felony-vote relationship. Any naturalized US citizen is also made aware of this. It's all part of the actions-consequences equation. And if 49 states and DC have methods in place to allow for the reinstatement of these rights, what is wrong with that? There is no reason whatsoever we should just hand these felons their right to vote back just because they achieve the major accomplishment of serving their time ... which, in most cases, they actually haven't done. Spending 10 years in the state pen does not mean you are better person and a law abiding citizen on the day you walk out of there. I see nothing wrong with making these people prove their value to society before just arbitrarily handing them the same rights as a law abiding citizen.

Some people are cut from a different cloth thatn the rest of us. There are many people that take chances and risks that most of us wouldn't even consider. Of course, when you stop and think about it, it's those type of people who have made discoveries, innovations and advances throughout the history of man.

There is no denying the fact that Ozzie has significant "pull" in the organization. It is somewhat shocking to me that he has been able to have such an influence on the organization in such a short period of time. Kenny must have a lot of respect for Ozzie and his baseball knowledge and instincts. When Ozzie was hired, many people thought that this was an example of the Sox being cheap. In some people's minds it was nothing more than a publicity ploy and Ozzie would nothing more than a figurehead that would kowtow to KW. It's turns out that this is not the case as Guillen's opinions are certainly respected and acted upon by the powers that be.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Feb 18, 2005 -> 02:02 PM) Well I don't take this as serious as you do for obvious reasons but I will probably continue doing my thang and I encourage you to continue calling me out. Just understand my humour is bizarre and unconventional. OK. I'll try and keep that in mind and not get quite so worked up over it. But, I will continue to call you out.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Feb 18, 2005 -> 01:56 PM) There have been a few good debates on here. Of course I wasn't involved in any of them. Nor was I.
