  1. If Flowers is traded it really puts the Sox in a spot. They bring in Blanco and then they risk severing the relationship with AJ. As things stand now, I bet AJ would back for a series of short term cheaper deals........it would just have to guarantee him playing time. It's the same deal if they keep Flowers though. AJ would be gone after this year, I'd bet
  2. By giving Joe Cowley this much attention in his email inbox, you guys are probably giving his ego some serious wood. There are bigger battles to fight than this guy.
  3. QUOTE (ozzfest @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 07:33 PM) love blanco

  5. Journalism was my initial interest back when I started college. In the end, though, I think I need sports to be my get away. Once it is what I do for a living I would imagine it would get tedious. Also right now I have a friend right now traveling the country producing women's soccer for TV. I wouldnt want to put up with maybe years of doing not-ideal stuff. But then again my current job, known as no job, also sucks
  6. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) DO NOT try to "educate" Dan Berstein on ANYTHING. He is a pompous, Duke educated know it all and likes to belittle and talk down to anyone who disagrees with him. Terry Boers is funny. Dan Berstein is a jerk. I've never found sportstalk-radio-host a position where you need someone noble. I wouldnt want to hang out with this guy, but more often than not he knows his stuff. Especially for NBA, you cant go many other places for knowledgeable discussion. While sportstalk radio is very often a locomotive off the rails, I will take that over the neatly varnished Comcast Sportsnite-type discussions. Frankly, I think B&B get the ratings they do because a lot of people like to hear callers challenge them. Their confrontations are pretty entertaining, even if (as we all know) the hosts control the medium. This may seem like a basic point, but B&B take a position and make it really clear how strong they feel about it. Oddly enough many hosts dont do this. I think that's why they get listeners who dont even like them. Because there's something to take in and think about when they discuss a topic.
  7. Interest in Blanco doesnt mean they're automatically trading Flowers. They may want to build his legend as a prospect in AAA. If he comes up and struggles both offensively and defensively, he takes a hit as an enticing piece of trade bait. Plus there's the whole thing of trying to be a division contender while playing a total x-factor behind the plate against lefties. And if you already know you want to bring in a true DH, then you are holding back his development having him start opening day as a once-in-awhile player.
  8. Beckham would have to lead off if we really added no one. I dont think they want Alexei getting tons and tons of at-bats. I was also glad to hear some of the comments by Kenny that speed at the top isnt the end all be all. Beckham can put himself on second base quite a bit.
  9. B&B seemed more fair to soxnet than i thought they'd be, seeing as how Cowley is their guy. Boers in particular has indicated in the past that he detests message boards (though much like Bob Dole not having seen Trainspotting, I would think he's attacking something he's never experienced). If anyone DOES wanna get back to the trade talk...perhaps look at this old article about what was netted for Sabathia. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/...sabathia-trade/ I'm kind of curious what people think about the haul Cleveland got for a guy who was a rental (plus moved at the deadline). How does that package compare to what we'd need to give up for AGon? ndians Receive: Matt Laporta- $23.5 million Rob Bryson- $5 million Taylor Green- $7 million Zack Jackson- $1 million Total- $36.5 million
  10. The trade doesnt even matter now this is getting interesting/wild/wow
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) I will point out that the Tribune in no way shape or form tells us what we put up on our blog. We are completely independent of the newspaper. Completely understood and I hope my comments dont make it out to be me saying that. B&B talking about this now.
  12. QUOTE (WCSox @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) Well, that's the entire point of blogs: they're independent. The media conglomerates have a presence on the internet as well, but that doesn't mean that they control the medium. Where we're at today is that the newspapers battle with each other to be the first to give a blog report credence. Or to be the first to quash a blog report. It's just a weird situation where something previously independent now has these larger entities involving themselves. Which I suppose shows how desperate they are. It will be weirder i suppose when SunTimes goes under.
  13. I think a lot of these writers have a hate for the blogs -- largely because it's taking their jobs. The SunTimes is near folding, the Trib is basically holding on til that happens. Obviously not in an intentional way, but it doesnt take a genius to realize a lot of us get for free (free in a sense) what past generations paid for and relied on in the morning paper. That does not excuse Mr Cowley's lack of professionalism, but at the same time these are people's livelihoods. I can at least see why there'd be tension. Sam Smith always used to write about how much he hated blogs. Then upon accepting a buyout, he became what he hated. Sam Smith handled that in a more classy manner, I would say. Even if I disagreed with him, it was better than what Cowley did today. If the larger media conglomerates are now starting to run/influence/promote the blogs, that is an issue that (Cowley aside) I would find a little fishy. To me, that is worth bringing up (again, preferably in a classy manner). I like how the internet allows us to participate and control what is fed to us. If that is being compromised, yes I have a problem with it.
  14. The Padres would move him with two years left on the deal to accomplish one thing -- to bring in a giant load of prospects. Without Floyd or John Danks outgoing, I dont know if we can compete with another team's offer.
  15. It's just really easy to say "anyone providing info to a message board should wait til it's more advanced in the negotiations" If this became common practice, the message boards would have no scoops, and we'd still learn everything from the Trib and SunTimes websites. To me, the ability of the common man to share information makes twitter and message boards a really powerful set of tools for a fan. I dont really buy the argument that all this transparency affects the GMs abilities to do their jobs, either.
  16. I'm on a Bulls board where an information providing poster mentioned something about a Hinrich/Wallace for Hughes/Gooden trade one offseason. Nothing happened and he was laughed at, then months later at the deadline the deal went through in a different form. He also broke the Jalen Rose trade. Many times he has mentioned things that dont happen. I suppose if you have a source, you just give the boards all your info on negotiations, and maybe 25% of the time negotiations succeed. And the 75% it doesnt go thru, you take heat from posters who know nothing but fill up with jealousy faster than a test tube.
  17. His comments on twitter basically indicate that the report is correct, but that the Sox have been rebuffed when approaching SD with these things. I suppose we'll just see if anything progresses. Cowley is so petty, there's like zero professionalism whenever he's interviewed. I'd rather someone not be a Comcast Sportsnite robot, but the other extreme is believing you're the funniest guy on earth and showing it at every turn like this dude. I think most people leave this seeing SoxNet being more professional than him.
  18. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 09:59 AM) In any deal like this, GMJ probably ends up on the Sox. I guess, although LAA seems like they have a bottomless wallet year in year out
  19. There have been two AJ's on this issue. He has talked about how he has enjoyed mentoring catchers in the past. But it seems like he has acted out on days Guillen sat him down...as was the case when Ozzie and Mike North got into it in heated fashion over some AJ comments to the media. Whether at midseason or from day one, Flowers should spend time in the majors this year. One solution is getting him at-bats as a part time DH...however, he has to keep catching and developing, or else it's pointless to not have him in AAA. How does AJ deal with this? If he's unhappy it's less likely he signs a hometown discount one year deal as I'm sure we'd like him to do for 2011. Just the fact TF is here maybe makes that impossible.
  20. it's a...nice day for a...white wedding
  21. Konerko will be 34 on opening day. This last year he got back some of the magic, but you dont want to be left holding the bag when he reverts. If you're planning to use this pitching rotation to contend, you want to consider any upgrading at the 1B position since it's a power one. I dont even want to look at 07 and 08.... lets see about 09: Konerko's numbers were good last year, but the standards for 1B should be high. On the team that won the world series, Konerko's OBP would rank where in the lineup? Ninth? We cant necessarily have a lineup like those guys, but at the least we can get a high performing 1B one of these years, cant we?
  22. I kind of have to advise that you read the 22 pages. There's a lot of cant miss stuff here.
  23. They'll pay him his market value later on. We'll have cheap talent for awhile here. At that point you have a payroll of... Peavy, Rios, Floyd and not much else as we stand currently.
  24. I just feel like other teams would see Jordan Danks as a borderline starting outfielder. As a likely outcome.
  25. No one should ever have fun ever. Board should be a safe haven from that http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/...lex-issues.html Did new GM Hoyer work for the Padres under Kevin Towers?
