  1. The leadoff hitter is a weird thing, because the dearth of them makes teams desperate enough to do complementary bad moves in order to make room for one. If leaving Pods out helps the defense greatly, I would give a look to a Alexei/Beckham 1-2 punch.
  2. We know Clayton should be a starter, but hey if he's a lockdown lefty in the pen --- and Colon can be passable as a starter -- that aint awful either.
  3. In this thread, has it been discussed that Fields has pretty much proved himself little else than a 1B?
  4. I want to clean up this defense mess. No one will hear me but I actually have no problem selling high on Pods if there's anything to be had. Put Alexei at CF and work on that infield to upgrade defensively. Becks to 2b, prospects for Rolen or someone that can provide a 370 OBP at third. Just my dreams is all. This team is so bad defensively, i'll just cringe if we get Halladay and then show we're unable to support him.
  5. I dont have time to read the thread, but are most people saying "crap for crap" on this one? I for one think it's a good trade. You get a versatile guy who can do more with the bat in situations, and can come off the bench cold and PH. Even now that he's slowing down, he still has some ability w/ the bat.
  6. minny fans must be depressed this week
  7. Tigers fans on this other board i'm on say theyre ready to collapse..hm. momentum hopefully is real and happening right now
  8. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 12:32 AM) And Twins go into the ninth up 5-3, and Joe Nathan blows the save. whoaaa. i really need to check back in on the end of these Twins games where they have a lead.
  9. I would be fine with the Brandon Allen trade I think if Dotel is flipped for a seriously nice prospect , ideally a CF or IF with speed. Though days like today make me want to ride with what we have. Lets trade Peña!
  10. Who knew we'd care so little when we finally got to 1st place.
  11. Thanks for posting that. Great stuff Eyre was briefly Mark's teammate in 00 i guess? Or were they call ups at separate times for the lefty role?
  12. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 11:17 PM) I just saw the Phillies in the clubhouse reaction to Wise's catch. Awesome. is it online?
  13. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:31 PM) Ha, wow, Obama's little pro-Buehrle stump speech. Although for some reason he doesn't seem to know who Dewayne "Weis" is. Well when the Bulls visited the white house, he told the front office/announcers in front of everyone: "These are MY bulls." (Pax, Wennington, Stacey King). So maybe he stopped watching sports as intently after the 90s. He's a little busy now anyway.
  14. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:35 PM) I'm a bit suprised we're doing this here. I know what Wise did today was extraordinary, but it doesn't change much outside of today. I'm not being harsh, I'm being realistic. Anyone remember yesterday? Dewayne Wise wasn't very good at baseball yesterday… what about today? But as 4th OF does he have to be judged like so? Near every team has guys like him, who by a thread are still in the majors. Unless you're payroll's high enough to pad your bench with starter-quality guys.
  15. If Wise had dropped that one, no one would be remembering that he kept it in the park. Hey thats part of it, you either produce the good result or you dont. He hasnt produced with the bat, but this year some of his best moments were actually defense related. Some people just really like a player. If they feel BA has been wronged, they'll dislike his replacement. To me, though, those two guys arent that far apart. One's faster, the other gets better jumps and likely has a better arm. People who root for Wise to fail (some said it recently) need to remember that we root for the jersey. There's a reason we dont want Crede to beat the Sox, even if we loved him as a WS hero.
  16. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:27 PM) I'm glad he made that catch today, and I give him a big thumbs up. But, other than that, he was just the right player at the right time. Does BA have the speed to get to the wall that quick? I think it takes a unique amount of speed to get there, plus a great jump. For at least one moment, his particular skill set got us out of a spot. Earlier in the year he had a great catch (in which he was injured) which led directly to a W.
  17. Frankly I dont understand why these boards always have hate for like the last guy on the roster. Timo Perez, Dewayne Wise. I mean, doesnt every team have a guy who's purely a backup for speed or for glove? Why hate this guy? All too recently some poster said something to the effect of "i now want Wise to fail" I have yet to see the team that doesnt have one of these guys. Unfortunately he was used improperly and put in the leadoff spot to start the year. Then had to play a bunch due to injuries. But even despite that, people still ride him hard even now that he's properly in his place as a 4th OF. He is what he is, to quote like every NFL player ever to be in front of a mic.
  18. I was inciting arguments in the BA thread all game, not knowing that sweet revenge would be mine in a matter of hours/minutes.
  19. QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:13 PM) f***ing awesome. You still suck DeWayne, but that was a f***ing amazing catch to save it in the 9th. The debates never die, heheh EDIT: which, hey, its a good thing i suppose.
  20. Oh yea Wise has noooo jump on anything
  21. Cmon if yr gonna give me the flashback highlights, gimme the Parque or gimme nothing.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) Quitting on a guy? I'm not talking about that at all and I watered that question down too far for the sake of mass consumption. I'm talking about things like starting old and s***ty players over him after he wins the job over said old and s***ty player in ST. There wasn't really much doubt going into this year that he was close to out of chances with this organization. Well the old guys they started had higher career #s than Anderson ever ended up producing. So it's like, if we throw out what we know now, Anderson could have developed if played more. But he has played in these last few years a good amount--and never developed, so how do we go back and fault them for win-now moves that put older guys in the lineup? When you're recently coming off a championship that was built largely from unexpected spare parts, then the temptation is there to go with another reclamation project over a youthful project (that already failed in 06) I guess there's that camp that thinks BA would be a completely different player if he had nonstop at-bats after 06. I am not in it.
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) (the fact that he currently sucks notwithstanding, and this question is to be read at face value): If we qualify it this way, then Borchard was robbed. Mike Caruso may have been robbed. When do you quit on a guy? never? They pay these guys tons, and the org has to move on to the next good idea before the team suffers too much
  24. Obviously I could get destroyed for this, but Alexei's OBP is approaching Coco Crisp levels, which is the guy many posters wanted leading off........ So if pods faltered next yr, you could start off AR/GB up top
