  1. If Padres were being ordered to get rid of Peavy, how come we werent hearing about other bidders leading up? The injury and contract...yea... but was there seriously zero interest coming from anywhere?
  2. If there are enough great 3Bs out there for every team to have one.... then yes i'd want Beckham at 2B. But since it's not the case, I'm in agreement w/ you.
  3. Probably Catch All material, but we have 8 good OBPs and then the 9th player is Quentin.
  4. I want that clump of OBP guys up high in the lineup. The success that Alexei has had this year, I would argue, is not specifically his having done two-hitter-ish things. Even though he's been great in the 2-hole, i dont know if that spot in the lineup shows any causality for that success He's taking more pitches. Back when he was lower in the lineup this year, he was doing that same thing. The difference in avg to obp has been pretty good for his standards (and by that i mean all year, not just as the 2). I think we all pictured him getting more fastballs hitting in front of the 3-4-5. Despite that, his average is lower than last year and his OBP is higher. I think it can be sustained down lower in the lineup. And even if some of this is wrong.....I hate to say it, but the thought of getting more Gordon at-bats per game is worth letting Alexei's stats suffer lower in the lineup.
  5. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 12:40 PM) Peavy is a player who's bottom line value is not just in his performance on the field. There are only a certain number of players who have this effect. This is something these stat "experts" won't take into account. Not to mention the attendance jump that will make JR all the more willing to spend the money that is coming off the books this offseason
  6. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 12:31 PM) I dunno if any of you guys frequent RealGM, but this is similarly ridiculous (hehe) to the Bulls fans over there b****ing about Reinsdorf paying Peavy and not Ben Gordon. It's a slow offseason and I knew it was a matter of time til that board would jump at something like this
  7. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 05:55 AM) Hey Kalapse, Can we get an updated version of your payroll spreadsheet? Thank you! That would be excellent. The thing I'm most curious about with this deal is seeing what it does to our free agency possibilities.
  8. Richard's ceiling appears to be that of solid #3 starter Poreda, now that he's away from the team that drafted him, is going to start being looked at as bullpen-type because of his makeup Obviously we cant judge the deal yet, but the guys we sent are replaceable. Peavy does some things that are very hard to find, and JR gets to take on that type of starter with his preferred method -- 4 year contract or less. His point about the big contract is a good one, but we're the kind of team that has to overpay anyway. I would rather have this on the books than have another one of those offseasons where FAs turn us down and we have to settle for Nick Swisher.
  9. This conversation (not this comment specifically) is reminiscent of one of the most mind blowing things ive heard Hawk say this year (or ever) "The most important pitch in baseball is the fastball. The second most important is first-pitch strike."
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) Your hypotheticals are just that, hypothetical. The fact remains that Josh still has not shown an ability to adjust, and is overmatched at the major league level. The Sox waited as long as they could before pulling the plug, and they obviously believe that Beckham and Getz in the lineup is much better than Fields and Beckham, and I cannot disagree Oh yea, i mean, hopefully my point's not being misconstrued, but to be clear - i'm very happy Josh Fields is very far away
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) Not even. If Fields is hitting .275, he is slugging far more than Getz ever could, i.e. the 3B of the future that they expected him to be. Perhaps youre right. But my example remains lets say if both guys are hitting .258, .315 OBP At some point, Beckham would have taken over for one of these guys, even if they were displaying some decent stats. Because theyve been pegged as the lineup's weak links for the entire year, and Becks has been mashing everywhere he's been. And it remains that Gordon likely wouldve replaced the righty bat
  12. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 12:14 PM) Bottom line: if Fields was hitting anywhere close to where he should be, he would still be at 3B, Getz would've done what he's done, and Beckham would probably still be in the minors. Fields's fate has never been tied to Getz. Just Fields. Lets say Getz and Fields were both hitting .275 all year and Beckham was held off for a few months. At the point when Beckham could not be held off anymore, it always wouldve been Fields that had the short straw. b/c Getz gives us a lefthanded bat and muchneeded speeded.
  13. Getz's success this year really crept up on me. I no idea his average had gotten this high
  14. It's funny how the Slayer thing was all primed to take off and then Bacon swooped in out of nowhere to dominate
  15. Alexei has improved since the beginning of the year, but I think the changes he made in the realm of taking more pitches..... the results of that were evident before the move to #2 So some of the things he's been working on have been unrelated to that move, and I think he'd be fine going back down lower in the lineup.
  16. The only thing more awkward than that interview was the one where some dude keeps bothering Sam Cassell about the constant E.T. comparisons
  17. See Borchard for Thornton is exactly what I was thinking about. Except! neither was being paid yet. I want a move where two guys are already on a big crazy contract, underachieving, and they get traded for each other.
  18. I actually agree with you. But in response to someone's prior post..... just thinking the way GMs think, I think there is no chance at all that the Sox would bench Peavy as a conservative route It would only happen out of necessity.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 06:43 PM) There is no egg on anyones face right now. The obly way there would be anything like that is if Peavy goes all Yankee Carl Pavano on the white sox, and even then, the egg would not be applied for quite some time Yeah, but said in other terms, you dont make this trade and strip the Sox of a #5 starter...unless the guy is going to give you something this year. So I'm all for the trade, but if they shelve him for this year (by choice, that is)....then it's sending a questionable message to the guys on the team who were liking what CR gave them.
  20. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) Isn't this the case for every pitcher? You have little chance of succeeding at any position in baseball, if you can't keep your composure and focus on the game. I kind of side with this. People always talk about how calm a closer has to be. But if he's talented he's gonna get people out. If he isnt he wont Keith Foulke had some very successful years closing, and he physically looked like he was about to die each time on the mound.
  21. They'll bring him back as soon as he's able. Too much egg on your face, especially if Richard keeps looking good (in his new park as well)
  22. QUOTE (rangercal @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 05:14 PM) Unless Delmon starts raising the OPS towards .800, I don't see how that is not a backwards move for the Twins. He is 23 though, so who knows. Yea, I was referring more to what it was at the time of the deal. Minny traded a 4ish ERA pitcher with some unfulfilled promise (he had started to fulfill finally at that point)......for a guy who was very highly regarded as a prospect that just hadnt delivered on his power promise and hasnt
  23. Lets say we have $8M to spend in the offseason. (Just completely throwing out a number) Do we get a top flight closer? Or do we get a .375 OBP guy at a position of need (and hope bullpen straightens itself out)? I wanted Rolen this trade deadline so I guess I'm still in the latter camp. Even if i might regret it later on. I say this picturing us losing 2 of our aging middle of the order guys
  24. Well i guess Garza/Delmon but it's a different situation than what i'd like to see happen with Brink.
  25. I know it's not the NBA with its luxury tax, but still..... ...... we regard Linebrink as untradeable. And it's probably true. But why cant we just move him for another guy who's underperforming, perhaps on a slightly more palatable deal? You never see those deals in MLB.
