SOX v. Minnesota 7/10/09 - 7:10 CSN

i cant believe our defense is actually about to get worse. -
If Coop can fix everyone, why do we even discuss individual pitchers? Theyre all just one large moving mass of CoopCanFixEm

Beckham is going to deliver so many RBIs-per-dollar for this franchise. For a long while. He's goin nowhere.

Does anyone else get the irritating feeling that Floyd would either be involved in this deal or (more likely) shipped elsewhere to save a little dough back? Actually i suppose to save $ in the current year maybe Contreras would be out for prospects? In a playoff series Jose would be a reliever, and has shown disdain for bullpen work in the past

White Sox Acquire RP Tony Pena from ARI for Brandon Allen

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) For a 20 year old adjusting to US pro ball in his first year, I'd actually say that's not terrible. But errors is not a good measure here, I'd want to hear from someone who has seen him play, how he looks out there. As far as fielding though, is there a big disparity between Cuba and US? I would think in Cuba there are fewer scalding shots down the line, but still enough of them to where one can ascertain whether they can handle the intricacies of the position or not. -

This reminds me of the Jeremy Reed thing, and hopefully turns out the same way. I think he was roughly 23 at the time...and it was kind of like, lets get something more sure. Said:may Reed go on and do whatever he's going to do in the game. And lo and behold he fizzled. This coming after he was a lot more impresive than Allen in AA, even as a 22 year old. Was solid but not spectacular in AAA. Reed of course had the bloated trade value because he's a position of need, not 1b/lf/dh Man just looking at Reed on baseball cube, he must be one of those terribly frustrating guys to have. It looks like each time he has been sent down to AAA in pockets over the last few years, he has torn it up. Then comes back up and reverts. -
I love Alexei, but his greatest value is to us. That OBP and his defense is eyebrow raising enough for other teams, but we've seen his clutchness first hand to feel that contract is still a steal somehow.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) The Brewers gave up Matt LaPorta for 0.75 of a year of CC Sabathia. I personally think a deal with Poreda and Flowers in it can be competitive and doesnt destroy us. Poreda and Richard got it done for a big name guy (who albeit had 3.80 ish ERA in the NL). Granted there was a little more of a lame duck situation with Peavy. But Peavy's younger than Halladay too.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 01:22 PM) *** Note mark this as the official prediction of this post *** I will have egg on my face if this turns out otherwise. Ricciardi the BJay GM has gone one record via MLBTR thought a New York newspaper that no team will be allowed to have an extended window with Halladay to negotiate a contract extension which to me kills any deal that KW will pursue. I state publicly that KW will not repeat will not trade for Halladay without an extension possibility. As the thread starter I stand by this. To me any attempt to deal with Toronto is dead now. May change if Ricciardi gets between a rock and a hard place come the deadline but I wouldn't pony up our future farm for 1.5 years of Halladay. Like some said better to roll the dice with AA/AAA prospects. Ricciardi knows he holds the chips this early before the deadline but things may change before the 31st. Link: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/ricc...-halladay-.html Yea but we can go round and round. If it's only for 1.5 years, then other teams' competing offers wont be that staggering either.

lostfan gets so angry/heated up about BA threads, but then ends up participating anyway - ha

if we're talking about a bench player, Wise had some pretty good PH stats last year. This year he's been streaky, if you call streaky being all out bad for a while and then delivering modestly well in situations in a recent stretch. Whereas BA has been mired in one very long drought after a nice start.

But doesnt it become a circus if he's constantly in rumors? Every time an ace hits the market, Poreda will start mentally packing his bags. Maybe some guys dont let that affect them, but I'd say just b/c they wont admit it to the media, it doesnt mean they always handle it perfectly.
-
We cant put Poreda's name out there in the news again. You cant constantly be openly offering him for every ace out there, that kills a player's confidence in their situation. So i'm not at all surprised KW will go all out to throw off the scent right from the onset. But at the same time I doubt we can pull it off. And really I think they still need another bat, I dont like Kenny's comments indicating the lineup is just fine. Just b/c we dont have huge holes anywhere but 2b, it doesnt mean we're 'win now' automatically. we're not.

Can he be 5th OF?
-
I dont see why he cant just be a 4th OF ongoing. He's past the age where you can get anything for him.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) Not gonna lie, this is a horrilble post that proves nothing. Sorry. I'm not saying Brandon Allen is going to be the left-handed Pujols or anything, but he's FAR from a no-name. This stipulation that Brandon Allen, at 23, was way too old for AA or AAA is ludicrous. If he completed the rest of the season at AAA this year and made the team out of Spring Training, he'd still only be 24. And even if he had to do another COMPLETE season at AAA, he'd make our team in 2011 at the age of 25. Man, what a geezer. GMAB. The point isnt intended to just call him a geezer outright. It's to say, we're at a crossroads with him. if something doesnt click at AAA, then he gets one year older and his trade value plummets (keep in mind as LF/1B). This is either the last chance to get something for sure out of this guy, or you wait out some of those flaws til he's 25, and you get a stud or absolutely nothing out of it. You're assuming he'd make our team at 25. But with these young guys we have to think in terms of trade value, and he gives a totally different outlook for other teams at 23 vs. 25. -

QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) In my opinion, Kenny just picked up one of the best relievers available, so he can control the market for relievers by trading someone like Dotel by the deadline. Kenny holds all the cards now, it will be hard for contending teams to pick up a bullpen arm by the deadline, so now we can sit back and wait for all the offers to pour in. Very uplifting post. I would imagine though there are other guys out there to be had -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:11 PM) Again, look at our pen and tell me who you're confident will still be there and still be worth a crap in two years and I'll tell you why we picked up Peña. This also leads me to think we're probably not shooting for the moon in the trade market. I thnk the big hold up for people is that relief pitching is such an unstable thing from yeear to year. Just look at guys like Cotts and Politte And Carrasco on the flip side. To have a good pen, you have to either acquire top flight arms or, most of the time, you get lucky with a few guys. What Pena is , im not sure. If attendance is going to keep us from being buyers, why not just hold onto your prospects and go for it next year when payroll drops Maybe their fear was that Allen looks awful to the eye in AAA and they dont want to see their asset take a nosedive. I gotta think this is why Flowers is not promoted yet. Let him look good for awhile longer. -
