  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 12:33 PM) SportsCenter ‏@SportsCenter 3h Crazy stat of the day: There were 763 points scored Sunday, the most on a single day in NFL history. 5 teams scored 30 points yesterday and lost, also a record.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) Why do you believe that Duke should not be allowed guns? Because he's crazy/eccentric/extreme? Is there a history of violence? Does he suffer from mental illness? Does he have a history of being irresponsible with his guns? If your answer is no, no, and no to those, then you can't say he is an irresponsible gun owner and he should not own a gun. Obviously there are other factors too, but those are the biggest ones. This is a person who has a demonstrated history of being simply unable to control his own anger issues on something as trivial as an internet message board. This is a person who has been called out for it, not just by me, not just by people of my political leanings, not just on political topics, but on virtually every single topic he posts about. And now, this is a person who is so offended by the idea that people might feel grief about a horrific tragedy a year later that he, unprompted by anyone else saying anything, needs to chime in to complain about hearing too much whining about it. You've got complete, uncontrollable anger issues, you've got borderline sociopathic responses to people's emotions. And yes, the odds are Duke won't be the one who does something next because only a minority do so. But every single one of these really bad events has a trail like this beforehand and people who wind up saying "how did I ignore that".
  3. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:25 AM) I wish that random other guy who I've never met in my life didn't just disprove my existence. Keep telling yourself that all you want, and if it requires disarming you in order to disarm people like duke, that's going to be my goal.
  4. Like I said, you've done a stellar job of showing me why I should just believe that "Responsible gun ownership" is a myth.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:16 AM) I wouldn't let my kids go over to your house either. What's your point? Well, that's pretty sad if you won't let your kids play with kids of a person because of their politics. I'd happily let kids if I had any do so with Republicans, I have Republican friends, but I wouldn't want them going to a place with loaded guns lying around.
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) So do you. And me. And the next guy. Also, he does not equal me, or you, or the next guy. Forgive me. I guess I should be berating him on a message board or doing an IP search so I can go to his house and monitor him to make sure he is being a responsible gun owner for you. I'll try to crack down on him a little harder from 1500 miles away. No. You should be helping me support policies that keep people like him from developing their own private arsenal. You've heard of one person spoiling it for everyone? It's right there.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:10 AM) You have a PhD. I can not fathom how you can actually believe what you just typed. If all you had done was read everything he'd posted on this subject from this site...would you let your kids go over to his house?
  8. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:08 AM) Why even have a discussion when one person's statements cloud your opinion so heavily you refuse to listen or acknowledge what any one who disagrees with you might have to say? That's pretty ridiculous. Because that person has the ability to kill in a split second. He's a great example of what I think of when I think of a "responsible gun owner". He will call himself that. He will not call himself irresponsible, and the law as it stands right now agrees. You want to prove to me that there is such a thing? You should be cracking down on people like that. You want to know why I don't believe you when you say you're responsible? Because you're not cracking down on him.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:07 AM) Whether or not duke should be armed doesn't really say anything about whether some other random gun owner is responsible, though. I'd say part of responsibility is making sure that people who shouldn't have them...can't get them. You keep your guns locked up so your kids can't get them...great...but then you let people like that get their hands on them? What's the point, just give them to your kids. Works just as well.
  10. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 10:04 AM) Because one idiot speaks for for everyone apparently! One idiot...with as many guns as he wants. Help me change that problem and then we can talk about responsibility. Until then...no, I don't believe you when you say you're responsible, because any reaction other than "This man should not be armed" is flat out irresponsible.

  14. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 08:27 AM) I am ambivalent. I just dont care anymore. If the shootings stop, great... if they dont, great. Just keep your hands off my guns. And there you go. You don't care how many people die, your guns are more important to you. Sickening. Anyone else who calls himself or herself a "responsible gun owner"...this is why I don't believe you guys. Because people like this say the same thing.
  15. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 04:58 PM) This is why it sucks that the DA decided on the lack of guilt in a quite unclear case "Quite unclear" in a rape case is not a case you bring. However, if there were reports of injuries, this seems like a case that even if it's tough to bring, could have been outlined for the court of public opinion. Spell your rationale out in a respectful way (which I've heard did not happen at all) and let society judge the evidence available. That's what they did with Rapelisberger.
  16. QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 08:55 AM) Taylor, why would I have a vendetta against Hawkins? I don't, okay? I also do not have a vendetta against Dunn, whom I really can't stand as a ballplayer. When he comes up, I hope he hits one out. I just thought it was a lousy signing from day one. I never railed againt Hawkins personally. I even questioned once that he might have a physical problem, like eyesight. What I have railed against, if that is the right word, is his continued ranking as a Number 1 prospect. I think there are a whole bunch of guys who should be ranked ahead of him, starting with Abreu. Dude...Jose Dariel Abreu was not in the White Sox's system the last time anyone here produced a prospect ranking list. One website I believe had Hawkins ranked above him and everyone sort of wondered why since IIRC that was Fangraphs and usually they have a reputation of being more reliable than that. It's difficult for people to rank Abreu above Hawkins when he has not only not signed yet, but he technically hadn't been granted status as a free agent or even able to play U.S. baseball when the last lists were done. I can absolutely guarantee you no one who contributes to the top prospect list produced by the people at this page will have Hawkins ranked as #1 when the next list is done in January. However, he will absolutely still be in most people's top 5, and if you think that deserves a "You cannot be serious" then that's pushing it.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 09:06 AM) I was so thrilled when we DIDN'T get Middlebrooks in the Peavy deal. He's the most overrated young player in the entire league, IMO, and has exactly the type of skillset that has sunk this team. I think he'd be a horrible fit and I don't think he'll ever be a good player. I'd take a flyer on him if he was free or available for a random live-arm type of prospect, but I wouldn't trade anyone of real value for him. So no, I think it's a bad idea. I'm about at this point. I'd have zero problem platooning him with Gillaspie if Keppinger wasn't on the roster and we weren't already carrying a spare, RH hitting pinch hitter, but he's not worth giving up anything of value for. The fact that his numbers were "Comparable to Gillaspie" when he's in his 2nd year ought to be disconcerting. He's a year younger so there's still some hope there...but he has serious flaws in his approach at the plate. He strikes out almost as much as Tyler Flowers and walks just about as much as well.
  18. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 06:38 PM) I dont care about mass shootings at all. If that level of tragedy is too much for us to bear we've gone completely soft. Lightning kills more people. Maybe we should ban lightning. It is insane that people like you are allowed to have guns.
  19. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 09:42 PM) That I attribute much more to advances in technology than social engineering projects that reside purely in a land of theory and the isolated test tube of academia. Think Pruitt-Igoe. I can go down this tangent because this is about NYC... but what happened? Id been many times but never for an extended stay, fly in, drive through, I went out of my way once a few years ago to go way out of my way on a drug fueled road trip up the East Coast to cross the Verrazano Bridge and go through Brooklyn... but until pretty recently I never stopped there. Never saw it. Id heard it was crazy. Like anything goes all the time, if you wanted something (legal or not) you could get it on a street corner at any time of day or night. Like a big, English-speaking Nuevo Laredo. Cool, I like that even if I lost interest in drugs and never been much for hookers. The characters that atmosphere attracts give a place a real charm. New York was nothing like that. Sure its a physical spectacle but other than that its bland. Too much modern sterilization, everything is just so overly inviting I felt turned off. I dont like rampant murder, but a little grit goes a long way. New York has none, not even Brooklyn (the Bronx had some moments but it was more blight than anything). What the hell happened? I keep up with s***. I thought all the soda ban nonsense was just news because some lily suburb would follow precedent and the obedient serfs who dwelled there would dare not defy. But no, New Yorkers--these big proud people from a massive city who didnt take s***--just take it. Its no more fun and interesting than Aurora, its a big vertical commercial wasteland that inspires nothing but disgust. If there ever was a people that need to feel the power of a nice .308 rifle in their hands its New Yorkers. They need liberation. Yeah, that's pretty creepy.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 04:51 PM) There are opinions from the nurse that examined her that pointed towards rape, plus the blood and bruising. Well, this appears to have been much worse than most of the details I saw in the media.
  21. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 03:38 PM) Agreed, a 4-5 starter is a waste, but isn't now the perfect time to spend money on a top-of-the-rotation type like Tanaka. Or even take a chance on a guy like Jimenez who has the stuff to be a top of the rotation starter and his price tag will be held down because it will cost a second round pick. With the exception of Garcia the core the Sox are building around aren't real young, they have to hit the ground running as such money should be spent now to supplement them. But "a second round pick" is a pretty high price for a team like the White Sox, who aren't obviously aiming to win next year, to pay. I'm willing to give that up in addition to a big contract when I think it's the last piece on a roster, but that should be a huge deterrent for a team that isn't in win-now mode.
  22. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 02:54 PM) What an embarrassment. 2 long plays out of the damn wildcat. There is a 100% chance of run. You need to stop that. Now that I think about it, that's almost the perfect offense to run against this Bears team and I'm surprised they haven't seen it regularly. Put an extra fullback in there instead of the QB and pick which side you want to run to.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) I love how both sides acts like they're above the other, yet both exploit tragedies to further their causes. I'd be more than happy to have fewer of these to exploit, but we have other priorities.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) They would be better off investing that money into an everyday 3B and catcher and picking up a 4th/5th starter instead. That way, they're not putting all their eggs in one basket. Other than one season with the Royals, Greinke's not nearly worth the money he's getting paid now. I have zero interest in adding a "4-5th starter" right now. I like the 5+ we open the season with, it's structured exactly as it should be for this team. Bring the young guys in an d play them. We actually have them in the rotation...play them!
