QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:10 PM) No, it's a win in 2015 and 2016 and maybe now move. Sammy Ayala, our only legit upside C in the system, is at least that far away, if he ever makes it at all. Next year's catching FA's are even less thrilling as a group. We must make a trade for C, and the current options all have many fleas. Sammy Ayala turned 19 in July and was in rookie ball this year. 2017 would be early for him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:41 PM) If he doesn't know that, either Rick Hahn told him he is trading Adam Dunn, or Paul Konerko is an idiot to not understand what Hahn is saying. Or he knows he's the veteran and he will get his playing time because that's what happens.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:39 PM) I dont know how you can say 'clearly' when the roster isnt set Also I'll note that making moves because you made other moves that forced you to is really stupid GM-ing. As an opposing GM, I had an offer on the table to trade for Adam Dunn and chip in $7 million yesterday, today that offer drops to chipping in $5 million because the White Sox clearly will be more motivated to move him.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:39 PM) Baseball players need their days off. And their blanket. Understood. I see, so you disagree with the idea that baseball players need a day off. So why did we just sign a backup 1b/DH?
-
QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) True or false: A Konerko/Dunn platoon does make the team better. I would think this is easily True unless you can make one hell of an argument about the last spots on the roster. I'd say this is clearly false because it forces Alexei Ramirez to play every game for the first 5 months of the season since we can't carry a backup IF other than Keppinger.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 12:38 PM) I am amazed that anyone thinks the 25th man on the roster, which Konerko is, will impact any type of reload, rebuild, etc. Yes the development of a player sitting on the bench works well, see Anderson, Brian 2006. The guy is making twice as much as Tyler Flowers for christ sake. Nobody's hands are tied and the roster is not now f***ed. This is a cheap bench option who amazingly enough should add some nice pop off the bench if needed. He is coming back in a defined role that suites him perfectly what the hell is the big deal? Do you really think Paul Konerko will be happy getting 100-150 PA's?
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) I mean, maybe he'll kick ass? Have to wonder if we have something arranged to send Dunn out of town If they have something ready to move Dunn, then waiting until after this was announced is stupid, inept management.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:23 AM) One thing I don't want to see, is this signing stunt the development of Abreu but given the money the club spent on him, I can't see that happening. I expect exactly that. I'm going to expect Abreu to get 400-ish PA's until I'm proven wrong. It strikes me as the same thing they've pulled with young player after young player, screwing around with them until they're "Veterans". Chris Sale stuck in the bullpen, the way Santiago has been messed around with, the way Viciedo was bounced back and forth between positions and between the minors and the bench in the big leagues clearly before he was ready, and I could keep going if I went back beyond just guys on the current roster.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) Morel- they probably don't care They probably don't...but if they don't take the step of cutting him loose, then they'll give him some at bats, and that's taking away at bats from a guy who should be getting them.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:04 AM) I think Semien is either earning a starting IF job or going to AAA, and I don't think re-signing Paulie affects that. The harm in bringing back Konerko is that it takes a roster spot from somebody more versatile like L Garcia or Keppinger, which puts more stress on the other infielders to play every day. It does push us closer to a AAA logjam with Sanchez, Semien, Brent Morel, and Leury all in AAA on paper right now.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:02 AM) 8 years for a 31 year old Cano? Can I just Ca-No? I bet you could get him to sign for 5/$175 if you don't like the 8 years part.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 10:00 AM) We fired Ozzie and cut Darin Erstad a long time ago That doesn't mean our personnel decisions make any sense. For example...Hector Santiago's treatment the last 2 seasons has been abysmal. A little different since they were giving Axelrod a shot at the rotation over him, but comparable in how we've hurt the development of a talented player for no good reason whatsoever.
-
QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) The White Sox aren't winning anything next year, so what harm does it do allowing the Franchise guy a proper "farewell season" with "his" team? How much of a farewell is it if he's sitting on the bench or he's on the DL with a back injury or he's barely hitting like he did last year?
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:54 AM) That squeezes out Keppinger unless you cut one from the pitching staff. If no moves are made, Leury probably goes to the minors, he has options and they're unlikely to buy out Keppinger.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) Why do I get the feeling this will at some point come at the expense of Abreu's progress? Which doesn't make sense but I've learned not to trust the Sox here. My thoughts exactly. Gotta play the veterans, they've earned it.

Sox to Make Hard Push for Granderson
Balta1701 replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:43 AM) Yes, for a team that lost 99 games. Would you rather take a chance that the 2nd round pick turns out to be someone like Addison Reed or Gio Gonzalez who can help the Sox either directly or indirectly 5 years from now while they'll be competitive, or would you rather Granderson help lead the Sox to 77 wins instead of 73? If Konerko wasn't back I'd have said I'd prefer the Granderson option if he was at a contract I liked, but any chance for him to get PA's rotating positions to the DH spot just evaporated. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) I don't know where that breakdown would have started. Did the law state when procurement would begin? Was it an issue with a lack of adequate funding and legislative flexibility? "Buck stops here" and all that, but where this exactly went wrong really should be evaluated, not just a couple of top-level managers losing their jobs. This paragraph caught my eye this morning.

Mine is in an incredibly cheap case by Incipio and has a very cheap, $.33 a piece screen cover from Amazon on it. I've found that keeps it in excellent shape.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 09:17 AM) The fact the website is largely working pretty well now is a pretty good argument that the problem wasn't 'government' or the concept itself, but that it should have been started 3-6 months earlier and then the roll-out would have essentially been fine. Now that the filibuster is gone for nominees it's time for the head of HHS to fall on her sword. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Official 2013-2014 College Hoops Thread
Balta1701 replied to Brian's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 08:36 AM) Terrible, terrible 2nd half for Indiana last night. Crean was not the problem, it was sloppy play by freshman/Sheehey (outside of Vonleh). 'Cuse was just baiting everyone to shoot jumpers, and it worked. That said, 'Cuse is a dang good team. Have not seen Crean so irate during a press conference. Hopefully the team responds. By the end of the year, the defense could be suffocating. Did they play a 2-3 zone? -
QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 11:37 PM) Exactly. theoretically the can keep the pitching staff intact for 2014 then come 2015 they should have a lot more room to make a trade for yet another "big piece". Also, the Mariners offense was nearly as bad as the Sox (they scored just 26 more runs, had a lower batting average, and their OBP was just 4 points higher)...Are they D-U-M-B for throwing money his way? 26 more runs than the White Sox while playing in Safeco instead of the Cell.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 06:08 AM) Then be prepared to give up a f***ton of talent, because the Dodgers have no reason to move Kemp and pay a bunch of his salary. We're much better off taking on money right now then giving a chunk of our minimal talent. Which is why some team with a lot of talent in the minors and a need in their OF will take a gamble on him.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 01:11 AM) He is going to miss 15-16 months, while Floyd is only missing 9? Maybe a second TJS is a longer recovery, I have no idea, but he is throwing a baseball right now. I believe a 2nd TJS is definitely a longer recovery...however, I'm still iffy on whether Floyd will make that 9 month schedule before being game-ready.

Eventually something probably will happen to reform that system, the author is 100% right that it keeps small market or non-competitive teams from having a shot at these guys and they could really help build the brand of those teams if they land the right guy.
