QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 04:06 PM) It means there are jobs out there, if you do the right things. Being at MCD for 10 years and not getting a raise is probably a bigger indictment of the worker, than of MCD. Like I said, thankfully we know McDonalds has a strong health care plan for its employees and covers birth control so that people don't get stuck working a job like that while having to pay for a kid they had when they were 19.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Is it not possible that she is merely an adequate worker, doing the bare minimum just to get by? Clearly her mistake was having kids. Thankfully I'm sure McDonalds provides a strong health insurance plan for its employees including education and birth control benefits as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 03:45 PM) In almost exactly eight years I have increased my salary about 110%. You have better than a high-school education I'm presuming? If a person has been working at McDonalds full time or nearly so since they were 16, they may well not have one. The unemployment rate for people with a high school education is currently 8.3%, and 12.4% for people with less than a high school education. If that person has a college degree, then that's a potentially likely reason why they haven't advanced, because they were only working that job part-time for a large portion of that period. And I'm sure McDonald's maternity leave policies are strong right? It's not like we'd be the only country other than Swaziland and Papua New Guinea to not mandate paid maternity leave, we couldn't possibly be that inhuman.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 03:41 PM) Speaking of McDonald's, I read the story of one of the workers trying to get them to pay everyone $15/hour. She claims that she is 26, has been working there for 10 years, has 2 kids (2 & 7) and is only making $8.25/hour. If you are only making 8.25 after working at the same place for 10 years, maybe the company isn't the problem. She should have either moved up or moved on by now. Thankfully good-paying jobs with opportunities for advancement have been plentiful for the last 5 years, right?

75 year old Republican Senator Thad Cochran from Mississippi who voted in favor of restarting the government last night gets a Club For Growth/Tea Party primary challenger entering the race today.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) Should be interesting to see if Boston ultimately goes nuts and overpays. 70 million? How many years? Four? No way this guy just gets 10 mill a year. That's gotta be 6 years.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) Didn't the Sox blow a lead of about 15 or 16 games at one point in 2005? How could people not realize they were collapsing like they could in 2012? I had confidence in the 05 team and lost all my confidence in the '12 team when I could see the fundamentals starting to fall apart in late August. Whether it was because people were tired or what, you could see it all going to trash. There were a few 05 games I definitely turned off midway but always had the game on the next day. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:23 PM) Eventually, that isn't going to work anymore and if they can't, at that point, throw some money at their problems, they are going to be bad again for a long time. The Rays are one team I don't think needs to worry about the impacts on their franchise of a couple 90 loss seasons in a row while top draft picks are acquired.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) BS. You probably did the same thing in 2005, since they were collapsing then as well. Nope, watched every moment. Gave up on the 2012 White Sox right around then (you might remember I took a complete posting Hiatus for a couple months right there as well, in no small part because I knew otherwise being at this website during that period would make it worse"). -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 06:51 AM) At a Sox/Tigers game late last year, the fans couldn't even be bothered to stand up and cheer at big moments with the division at stake To be fair, by that point it was pretty obvious the White Sox were collapsing. I stopped watching completely right around the end of August because I could see what was about to happen and didn't want to watch it. -
QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) Have they ever paid big money for a free agent? Knowing them they'll sign Casey McGehee at a bargain basement price and he'll end up putting up 'good numbers". No I cant recall the Rays ever spending this level of FA dough, and the Rays may well wait on the FA market this year until they see what kind of return they're able to get for David Price.

What should the Sox do differently to prepare for 2014?

Find a quality first baseman. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 10:21 AM) The shutdown could have bought healthcare.gov 40 times over' I think the author of that post is crossing his or her numbers up. The $24 billion cost estimate is not the cost to the government, it's the cost to the entire economy of the shutdown according to an S&P estimate. The government definitely lost billions, maybe more than $10 billion (I haven't seen a reliable, complete accounting of that yet) but I know where the $24 billion # comes from.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) Thibs should just send him down to Rucker Park until he can get past half court without getting the ball stolen. I'm not sure I care about such things. Based on the Heat/Bulls playoff series, at least for now his job is "when you get a wide open 3 don't pull a Kyle Korver and don't bleeping miss every one!".

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 10:00 AM) Snell can shoot, but man that boy dribbles like a goofball. That seems like something Thibs will correct.

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 09:40 PM) Ok. Players always play with the same effort. Doesn't matter the situation. I guess I imagined guys says "we were trying to win one for X". Sorry. The 2013 season is so screwed up that it actually makes more sense to say "the players knew when Sale was starting the next day so they partied extra hard the night before figuring they didn't need to work as hard as Chris would take care of it". Hopefully that wasn't the case, but I don't see any other team whose obvious ace is on the bottom of the league in run support and worse than anyone else on the staff. -
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 08:38 AM) Again, the Red Sox top minor league catcher, Lavarnway, has not proven he is ready. The back-up in Boston, Ross, is a career back-up guy. The Red Sox will most likely want to re-sign Salty and since the team has had success and he has daughters in school I would think he will want to stay in Boston. He hit righties well this year and really struggled w lefties but he is a switchhitter. I've seen some people suggest that Boston and NYY could both be serious bidders on McCann.
-
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 09:59 PM) Any chance Teague and Snell get some meaningful minutes this year, think it would be pretty important if Bulls want to be healthy come playoff time. I really hope they do. I mean yeah Thibs gets trust but the insane minutes are probably everyone's biggest complaint and worry. On paper this could be a very deep team.

“@SamSmithHoops: Deng with loose ball takes middle on break, hits Dunleavy on right wing, curls in and finds cutting Boozer for score. Krzyzewski's fantasy”

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 09:13 PM) Pissed about what? It's just petty at this point. The 110 percent jokes are tired. It is a new season, the MVP is back, watch and enjoy it I hold grudges longer than you guys apparently.

Does the 2nd guy have more strikeouts or a higher number of ground balls? -
Any impressions of Snell for anyone watching? Twitter says just made his first 3.

I don't feel like the 2013 White Sox played hard or focused for anything. -
“@CSNBullsInsider: Thibs going with Marquis and Kirk together in the backcourt for Derrick and Dunleavy, Nazr for Jo.” Interesting backcourt pairing, I know Jimmy's out but I wonder if that'll show up in the rotation.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:30 PM) The fun is finally back. Embrace it. This season is going to be extremely fun. Talk to me about that when I'm sitting at a bar in Denver on October 29 before the MIT/caltech party. Until then I'm still pissed. I do still have a Bulls hat to wear though.
