QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 06:35 PM) I don't know about that. Are we all looking at the same Alex Rios? Yes. Like I pointed out earlier in this thread, Nelson Cruz has been worth 1.5 WAR on the year. Alex Rios has been worth 2.1 WAR on the year. 2.1 WAR translates to about $10 million in value already with 2 months to go in the season. And he's hitting .308 since the All Star Break, so yes he slumped in June but he's been solidly productive again since then. I have zero issues with him being in RF for the White Sox next year if the only other option is giving him away for free.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 06:31 PM) The last couple months, Rios hasn't been all that productive. I think if it is a dump, it would be very similar to the time the got rid of Carlos Lee. You have to count what they do with the freed up funds as part of the return. Best case scenerio, what does Rios net you this winter or at the next deadline? For a team that probably won't comtend next year, is that better than the added financial flexibility? That's fine, I'm happy to count the funds along with it, but we still got 2 key pieces to the 2005 team when Lee was dealt. He wasn't given away on waivers for nothing. Give me back a legit piece that could contribute in a couple years and I'll be close to content.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) Sure. They have his replacement in AAA, and that is $17 million that could be spent on other players. I wonder if Hahn tried setting teams up before the deadline, knowing all along they would take salary relief but asking for the moon so teams would think he wouldn't give him up without a huge return. That $17 million is unlikely to give the White Sox better performance than Rios if it is spent on the FA market in the next offseason or two. And if the Sox are genuinely in a pinch for having too many outfielders, fine, move Viciedo to 1b next season and it's not the worst thing in the world. They aren't forced to do this if the Rangers won't give up something useful.

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 06:20 PM) Yeah, let's all overlook 10 years of suckitude... 10 years of suckitude? First of all, he was drafted in 2004, I have no idea where you're finding his college numbers and judging based on that. Secondly, he's been a legitimate 25 HR+ guy every year of his career, topping out with 44 HR and an .892 OPS in 2009. I wish the White Sox had someone sucking that badly. 2011 with the Orioles, 37 HR, .806 OPS. After his start to the season it wasn't out of the question that you were getting a year closer to his 2009 performance and that was great. At the very least maybe you figure you've gotten his 2011 numbers and you've really solidified your team with a bottom of the order power bat. Then he fell off a cliff. The OPS he's put up since early May is nearly 300 points worse than his career average and 240 points worse than he's put up for any season in his career.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 06:19 PM) What are you talking about? I'm saying that pulling him back off waivers because you think you can get more for him in the off-season is a serious risk. And there's obviously a lot more to it than letting a productive bat walk; it's a significant salary dump as well. It actually depends on whether or not the Rangers are prepared to make a fair offer. If the Rangers aren't prepared to make a fair offer right now, then there's very little risk in pulling him back. Worst case scenario we go into next season with him as our RF again. How terrible, a productive right fielder. If the Rangers make a fair offer, then you're right there is definitely risk in expecting that offer to improve. The fit here really is perfect, but a perfect fit isn't necessarily a guarantee that the Rangers will do what I'd do if I were in their chair.

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 06:11 PM) I just can't see how that is possible. 11 home runs, .291 batting average, 1.013 OPS through May 9 had a lot of people saying that. Literally carried the Indians for those first 30 games. Since May 10, he's hitting .178 with a .517 OPS and 4 HR.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) Rangers Claim Rios – Trade Unlikley Major League sources have confirmed that the Rangers claimed White Sox OF Alex Rios on trade waivers. The Rangers have until tomorrow to complete a trade for Rios, but sources say a deal is not likely. The two sides had multiple discussions before the non-waiver trade deadline but could not a agree on a deal. The White Sox were asking for Pitcher Martin Perez, Pitcher Luke Jackson and Infielder Rougned Odor – the Rangers were not interested in parting with those players for Rios. In other trade news: former Ranger infielder Michael Young has cleared waivers. The Rangers discussed trading for Young before the Non-Waiver deadline in July, but there were significant differences among the baseball Rangers baseball personel about that potentional acquisition and they never got close to making a deal for Young. The Rangers are still hoping that Lance Berkman will be able to return to the lineup in the next week to 10 days. More on the website later. This was on TR Sullivan's twitter account. TR Sullivan @Sullivan_Ranger 2m Rangers Claim Rios - Trade Unlikley http://wp.me/p1rXwL-8WMY I would actually take 1 of Odor or Jackson in a heartbeat. I think every declaration that it is "unlikely" is being based on the fact that it didn't get done before the deadline, and if Stone's statement that the Rangers expected Cruz to appeal is true, then you can tear every one of those statements up. The Rangers didn't need a RF at the deadline if they thought Cruz would appeal; they would have been filling their DH spot part of the time. Now the Rangers OF is much weaker than anyone thought it would be. If I thought Cruz would appeal I wouldn't have given up anything of value for Rios at the deadline.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:50 PM) On a racetrack going flat out through every straight? That's what I meant by "tracked them". Obviously your regular daily drive isn't going to run the thing flat in 11 minutes, but if you want to enjoy the performance of the things you are severely limiting its battery life. Oh, ok, so that's something you compare with how often a nascar vehicle goes to the pits for gas. Gotcha.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) I think it depends when he was claimed? Maybe the clock starts then? I don't think that's the way it works, I think it actually goes the full 48 hours from when he's put on waivers, because otherwise it'd be a race; they wait the full 48 hours and then see which team has claimed him in the order of their losses and leagues. If the Braves had claimed him Monday night and the Rangers claimed him Wednesday morning, the Rangers would still have won that claim. If the Astros for some reason claimed him 47:59 into the clock, the Astros get him.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:42 PM) Either way, if he went on waivers Monday, then a deal has to be done by Saturday right? It depends. I've heard before that MLB doesn't count weekend days as "business days" so they don't count against that clock, but this is all very opaque.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) The problem isn't charging and batteries, you kinda know what you're signing up for when you buy an electric car. Its how rapidly you'll burn through a charge putting the car through any sort of grunt. Dude's have tracked them and gone 11 minutes before needed a recharge. That's like Veyron SS in speed-mode flat out trying to get above 250mph inefficient. That doesn't sound right at all, can you add a link so we can see what you're talking about?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:31 PM) They are dumb then. Without Nick Swisher, the White Sox don't make the playoffs in 2008, but you don't see people claiming his acquisition from Oakland was a good one. If that was our first playoff visit in 20+ years I might think differently. And one big difference would be that Shields is actually contributing to the Royals, not being benched and useless. If Swisher hit 35 HR that year and the Sox made the playoffs with him helping a lot, I'd have cared a lot less about giving up Gio for him.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:36 PM) So many replies in this thread, not sure if it was already noted that apparently Rios went on waivers Monday, so a deal is done today or tomorrow or not at all https://twitter.com/DannyKnoblerCBS/status/...569974179340288 There are some disagreeing reports about how long the teams actually have. I've found articles from 2009 saying that the time to make a deal is 72 hours and the time on waivers is 48 hours, that could give the Sox maybe all weekend if the weekend isn't counted as business time. But, that could have changed in the last CBA.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:20 PM) I think his numbers are inflated, he's an injury risk, he's old, and he's going to command something in the $13-15 million range. Not the direction we need to go in if we're trading Alex Rios to the Rangers right now. Yeah I agree his numbers are inflated but I was figuring with his career numbers and his injury problems this year he might be closer to the $10 million range. I'd guess that most teams would look at him and think he's no longer a guy that should be playing every day in the field. That's how I'm looking at him.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) There's writers in KC saying the deal still isn't bad. When the Royals finish the year with 82 wins and a third place finish, we'll see what they say then. They have Shields next year right? If they make the playoffs either this year or next year then I'd figure some people will say it's Ok.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:13 PM) I'll admit, us signing Granderson is like my worst fear as a Sox fan. I know it's a thread derail but may I ask why? I actually think a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd to Granderson would make a ton of sense for the Sox next year if they move Rios or De Aza somewhere. You plug Granderson in wherever you want, DH or OF slot, getting a ton of at bats thanks to Dunn occasionally playing 1b and Garcia and Viciedo both being righties. He then slides to the primary DH spot in place of Dunn the next year.
-
Also just so it's pointed out...in the fangraphs world, Nelson Cruz (and his 27 HR) were worth 1.5 WAR to the Rangers this year. So far, Rios has been worth 2.1 WAR to the White Sox.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:08 PM) LOL Rogers already hinting at Hahn to save money to go after cano, granderson or ellsbury One of those 3 should not be priced like the others.
-
QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 05:00 PM) Question though...why are Rangers dying to give up anything for this. They're looking at a .750 OPS corner outfielder. I can see him being worth (to some team) either what he's owed, or prospects of OK worth.......but not both. Because they're tied for the division lead and 1.5 games away from being out of the playoffs and their biggest bat was just suspended for steroids, seemingly with them thinking he would not be suspended this year. They ought to be quite desperate to fill that hole, otherwise they're likely to wind up on the outside looking in come October.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:56 PM) My thoughts too. Hopefully the tables have turned enough to give something else up. At the end of the day, if the Rangers don't win the WS and it's because their offense stays cold, it'll be a shame they didn't give up some decent prospect for Rios. Solves their problem there next year, too. The fit just makes a ton of sense. Worth noting...right now the Rangers and A's are tied and 1.5 games in front of the Orioles.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:51 PM) Danny Knobler Verified account @DannyKnoblerCBS Rangers and White Sox "weren't even close" on Rios deal before the 31st, they told people with other teams. If the Rangers thought Cruz was going to appeal and play for the rest of the season this wouldn't be surprising at all.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:47 PM) A fanbase irate Alex Rios wasn't acquired? If I were a Rangers fan and they not only let themselves get fooled into Cruz being suspended with no replacement but also topped it off by passing an opportunity to put someone decent in his place, yeah I'd be irate.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:38 PM) I respectfully disagree. We're talking about Alex Rios here. I think their fan base, if knowledgeable, knows he is far from a savior or even a great ballplayer. I'd think some of their fan base won't want him at all. But those same fans will also want to make the playoffs this year and they know that their power hitting RF has been knocked out effectively for the season.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:25 PM) I wonder too on these Leafs - how does it handle the winter in Chicago? You're driving, the wipers are on, the heats on full blast, the defrost is on, etc. That's a lot of electricity being used up I would think. Another reason why the back-up gas engine is a good safety net. The real trick with the Leaf is to take advantage of the programability. I thought it would actually be a great vehicle for Chicago because I can picture myself starting the car early and blasting through gas in order to run the defroster prior to driving. With the Leaf you can do that when the car isn't running, you can run the heat and the defroster off of the house power rather than draining the battery, and you can tell the car to heat up from an app on a cell phone as well. If you spread out the heating you can make the car a lot more comfortable while saving the battery power. That said, yes the battery output does decrease in the cold. If I had to drive 45 miles a day I wouldn't think of it as an option, but 20 leaves a very large buffer. I'd say the best thing you can do is ask the dealer and check a few review sites. The leaves are selling a ton right not, I think they moved like 8000 last month. People should be knowing what it can do by now.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) I'm hoping that Tesla can come together with a truly great electric-for everyone car. There's never going to be a single "Great for everyone" car. That's why there are lots of types of cars. Right now the Leaf is a great electric car for people who use small cars. The Volt is a solid car for people who want the hybrid electric + gasoline car. It's a solid car but it does have some disadvantages, but that's the case for lots of cars.
