  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 3, 2013 -> 09:21 AM) De Aza began sliding when he said he preferred LF last year. Viciedo has never been and will never be a gold glover. Ramirez has been fine as has Rios. Other than that, it's been different players. Gillaspie has been really good. Keppinger and Greene and Dunn and Flowers have been awful. The only one who had a reputation as a good defensive player was Flowers and that was in a part time, very limited role. He has struggled defensively before. As bad as the defense has been, if they had any type of offense up until now, they would be battling for the lead in the division. It's crazy. They are closer to first place than the Nationals. Viciedo wasn't a gold glover, but he's taken a small step backwards so far this year.
  2. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 3, 2013 -> 08:30 AM) The #1 problem is that MLB has allowed TV money to ruin the game. The playoff schedule is horrible because of TV, and the ridiculousness of having your favorite team blacked out every Saturday so FOX can force you to watch two teams you don't care about is insane. The union needs to get on board with accepting less $$$ from the TV networks (which in turn lowers salaries) in order to get games on at reasonable times. No playoff game may start later than 7:30 pm local time in the timezone of the further East of the two teams. Also, complete revenue sharing of local TV money. In other words, no matter how much people complain about the World Series becoming a regional event...baseball doesn't need to "Fix" it because they're maximizing revenue from it.
  3. The remarkable thing continues to be...these same players were much, much better defensively last year. It's like they forgot to practice it.
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 07:52 PM) Sale and Quintana together threw 58.2 innings in the Sox minor league system. And clearly once they got on Don Cooper's staff, their performance fell apart?
  5. Will probably clear waivers, wind up at Charlotte, not be "He gone", and leave the team with another opening on the 40 man.
  6. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 07:40 PM) How so? I don't know, can anyone think of any recent threads where any poster praised the Sox's success in developing some of their pitchers and how it was setting them up for the future?
  7. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:52 PM) He only has 3 errors. Thought he had more.. What is the pass balls comparison? 5 passed balls for both of them as well. Phegley does have a better CS %age, but that's one where being in the minors never translates directly.
  8. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 07:22 PM) Another good point. And being cheap to sign draftee's and signee's when you are cheap you get the ones others pass on. It happens a lot with the pitching. How many times have seen a pitcher that they claim his fastball touches 95 and he's low 90's at best. Same with hitters That's an organizational philosophy particularly with pitchers. Move them to the starting rotation and don't have them overthrow the ball, because if they do that their control suffers and they get hurt more often. Frankly...it's been incredibly effective.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:53 PM) A lot of fans have allowed the Buddy Bell PR/spin machine to buy into the kool aid and are feeling burned for believing in our system's progress. I really felt Mitchell had a shot coming into this season...if he could become more consistent and cut down on his K's. Never had a positive feeling about Walker, who got a lot of hype just for being the first player drafted by the Sox that particular year. 75% of it is the startling reverse in Hawkins' fortunes. And we still need Thompson's defense in CF, if he can just hit 675-725 and keep improving, that would be quite valuable. The problem is the more sub 700 OPS guys you have in a line-up, the more pressure you place on Viciedo/Rios/Dunn and the pitching staff, etc. I still like Walker in the long term, but remember, he's still only 22 and he was raw at the time he was drafted. There's no reason why we should have expected him to light AA on fire to start this year, everyone says that single A to double-A is the largest jump you make in the minors.
  10. I don't know if it's to be believed, but Hawk just said MLB has decided to put off establishing an international draft until after the 2016 season.
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:50 PM) Oh gosh, when you threw out that hypothetical about acquiring the Great Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas I guess I did not realize what you were getting at. Now I understand. Yeah. You're incredibly inconsistent. You want to rebuild with prospects with talent, but as soon as any guy struggles on our roster you can't stand it and you want to discard them. You admire and envy the struggling talent on other franchises but are unwilling to deal with the same thing happening in Chicago. That's why your desire for the Sox to dump Ramirez, Peavy, etc., don't deserve any respect. As soon as the Sox got a player back for them, you'd turn on them and demand they be replaced once they had a down month.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:46 PM) Until you acquire other outfielders by trade or Mitchell/Walker/Thompson have justified getting an opportunity, it's hard to disagree. Although 90% odds are he's merely a 4th/5th outfielder on a playoff team. Let's just be honest, at the very least, Thompson is 1.5 years away, Walker is 2 years away, and Mitchell got his aggressive chance this year and did not succeed.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) You got me there, Balta. You got me there. The Sox win every comparison to the KC Royals. Some damn measuring stick you have dug up. Which is obviously why you want to replicate them in every way and would happily grab their struggling young guys while insisting we need to get rid of ours.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:43 PM) When's the last time the Sox fielded such an awful lineup? Was 2007 ever this bad? Next time Ventura feels the need to empty the bench, might as well do it when Danks is pitching as they probably won't win that game anyways. Yes. 2007 was this bad. Jerry Owens and Andy Gonzalez were in it. The bright spot of the entire season was Josh Fields.
  15. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:39 PM) .886 .840 .781 Career Minor League OPS's of Hosmer, Moustakas, and Viciedo. Guess which one is Viciedo's, Balta. ROFL!! .721 .737 .673 Career major league OPS's of Viciedo, Moustakas, and Hosmer. Guess which one is Viciedo's, Marty. ROFL!!
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) Great minor league numbers, at best, are only 1/4th or 1/3rd of the story with most legitimate top prospects. There's many things the casual fans don't pick up on that are signs of progress...happening behind the scenes...like with the Phegley situation, assuredly. I don't think there's any "Phegley situation" The guy's finally hitting in his 3rd year in Charlotte. He's had 2 incredible months. He's legitimately now pushing the guy in front of him on the big league roster. He keeps this up he'll be starting in the majors before the end of the year, but 2 months of success isn't enough to get very many players called up.
  17. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:33 PM) Obviously an .853 OPS from Viciedo as a 22 year old in AAA doesn't qualify. Eh, Viciedo's had 892 big league plate appearances. We know he's not developing, we know what we're going to get out of him. Now Hosmer, he's only had 1364 big league plate appearances. Now that's a guy who still has plenty of room to grow.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:30 PM) Absolutely. Without question, great minor league numbers, cheap contracts. I see. So you're plenty willing to give time to develop to cheap trash from other teams with great minor league numbers, just not ones from the White Sox. Guys from the White Sox struggle, they need immediately replaced. Guys from the Royals struggle...hey, they're one swing away from turning it around!
  19. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:26 PM) Give him another 2,500 AB's before passing judgement. Marty, if the Royals put Hosmer and Moustakas on waivers right now, would you want to claim them?
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:25 PM) Nothing like playing a strict platoon guy against a tough RHP Yeah. Rios shoulda been in there again. I bet I couldn't find a post where you and I agreed he needed a day off even if I tried.
  21. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:24 PM) What? Pointing out a typo!! ROFL
  22. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:21 PM) So if Flowers gets his average up to .215 and Phegley is still hitting .330, how can you make a change without Jered Mitchell being upset about it? Well first of all there is no one named Jered Mitchell in our system so I wouldn't worry about that.
  23. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:14 PM) How many does Flowers have this year? Also 3
  24. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) Jared Mitchell is going to go into shutdown mode if Flowers is "wronged." Absurd. He's already in shutdown mode.
  25. QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 05:16 PM) He's had a weird career because of his illness. He's good now. I'm not saying bring him up tomorrow, but if Flowers has a dreadful June and Phegley is still hitting, I'd bounce Flowers. If you're not saying bring him up tomorrow then you're agreeing with me that it's not time yet. I'd give Flowers until ~ the trade deadline. That's the level of shot I think he's earned. That's mid to late July.
