  1. Just so someone says it... If you're trying to sign someone like Granderson, you're doing so with the expectation he can help you compete in 2014. I'd happily go 3 years for him, but I'd be looking at years 2 and 3 effectively as a sunk cost. It might make some sense as he can DH after Dunn is gone and he could put another year in before the Sox need to actually have one of their minor league OF's stop struggling, so he can maybe still be useful in the next couple years...but signing him is a "Win in 2014" move.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) Oh, and I was feeling a bit devilish and wanted to play the role of troll this morning with regards to Gillaspie. That said, the Cubs are on par with the White Sox in terms of Major League talent. I don't buy this for a moment. Despite this sweep, the Cubs are playing IMO about right where they should be, while the White Sox are vastly below where they should be and look like a bunch of unfocused fools who forgot to do fielding practice in the spring.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) Rockets want Dwight. So do lots of teams. Are they getting the version from last year or the version that carried the Magic to the Finals or the version that dismantled the Magic while pouting for no good reason?
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2013 -> 10:23 AM) Yeah - but I awarded it to the White Sox even though if I built a rotation from the starters on the roster 3/5's would be Cubs. IT'S CALLED READING DO IT I see. So Edwin Jackson's terrible numbers don't get counted against him because after all it's just 2 months, but Travis Wood's great numbers count for him because after all...2 months rule!
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 31, 2013 -> 10:09 AM) George Brett said yesterday that "Home runs can kill rallies". That's one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Why don't the Royals just get it over with and fire their lunatic of a manager. Because they're about to have to replace their GM as well and the new GM might as well get a chance to hire a new manager.
  6. What's funny about this way of looking at things is that in order to make sure that the Cubs come off as on top, it counts "The entire f***ing starting rotation" as worth the same amount as a position the Cubs only use in a small percent of their games.
  7. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO SIGN A PLAYER WITH LOW CONTACT, HIGH STRIKEOUTS, WHO IF HE LOSES ONE STEP WILL GO FROM HITTING .230 TO HITTING .180 OVER 2.5 YEARS WITH THE WHITE SOX OH MY GOD HOW CAN SOMEONE SERIOUSLY BRING UP THE IDEA OF GRANDERSON AFTER WATCHING DUNN SHOOT ME. Seriously, 20% of his hits are due to his speed and would be lost if he loses a single step?
  8. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ May 31, 2013 -> 01:26 AM) I agree but I think that gillaspie would be more valuable as a utility infielder. fransisco brings the power and pop we lack with gillaspie at 3rd. I don't think we should shy away because of gillaspie. has Gillaspie ever played any position other than 3rd? and If Francisco is a solid upgrade from him, why would we expect he'd get through waivers?
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2013 -> 05:53 PM) Aren't they pretty similar in terms of on the field talent?
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) Castro, Rizzo, Baez, Soler, Samardzija, Wood, Appel and willingness to spend big on free agents is a better situation than what the Sox have going forward. Again, I never said they would make the playoffs, but in terms of talent on the field, I don't think the Sox will be matching them for a while after this year. :LOL you actually included Wood in that list. If the 2 teams changed jerseys you'd be citing how deep the rotation is with Sale, Quintana, Santiago, Axelrod, Johnson, Reed, and others as the reason why the Cubs will make the playoffs first.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) I'm not worried about the pitching, it's the fact that 2 years from now, it's hard to project anyone on this offensive roster still being a starter for the Sox besides Gillaspie and Viciedo. But it's still fine to project the Cubs getting to the playoffs first. Because you know, Sale + Viciedo + the rest of the Sox pitching staff
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2013 -> 04:21 PM) Way, way more resources going forward as well. NL Central should be damn good for the next 5 years. Somehow you think this is an argument for why the Cubs will challenge for a playoff spot?
  13. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ May 30, 2013 -> 03:26 PM) Oh and the fact that Rios and Ramirez have to play every inning of every day because there is no bench whatsoever does not help. They still ought to get the occasional offday. Rios playing 51 straight games is insane.
  14. QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ May 30, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) I like that the Sox are at least losing badly now. I can make fun of my own team if they lose badly. If they lose well-played, well-pitched 2-1, 3-2 games, its frustrating. At least I can have a laffriot or two with 2013 southside s***show. I think this is crazy. If they're going to lose I want them to look good doing it.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) He's just awful right now trying to pull everything. He looks like he did during the WBC. He desperately needs a day off. You'll be happy to know this is game 51 and this is Rios's 51st consecutive start.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 30, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) I wonder how smart he is. All he has to do is hit the ball in the air basically to left field or left center and he'll hit 40 home runs or more and run into a few doubles. He'd probably hit .220. I think last year notwithstanding Adam Dunn is the biggest flop in White Sox history. I mean to go to a game is to put yourself in misery having to watch him. He's probably the reason Sox attendance is blah. I mean anybody considering going to a game has to wonder if it's worth watching Dunn fail. I wonder if his batting average over the last 1,200 or so at bats is the worst of any regular in baseball history. Yeah, I think it's safe to say that Dunn is definitely the biggest free agent bust in franchise history.
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 30, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) This post made me look up his stats to show how truly bad he was and his numbers surprised me. The 5.02 ERA is ugly, but his WHIP was only 0.98, and opponents hit .157/.259/.333 off him, which is great. It seemed like everytime out there he gave up a walk and a homer, but that's not true of course. Scary, isn't it? Thankfully, Lefties who throw in the low to mid 90's grow on trees and are easily replaceable.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2013 -> 01:46 PM) http://www.kansascity.com/2013/05/30/42640...brett-onto.html Essentially, there's STILL going to be two of them. Big step to give that other role to someone who has been with the Mariners for the last decade, not exactly a hotbed of hitting...maybe they needed someone who was a better communicator with their young Latin players like Escobar and Perez, just a guess, though. I don't think Escobar and Perez are the young guys who need communicating with.
  19. They get a free look at how the navy operates every time the navy holds an exercise.
  20. And you guys wonder why I keep saying that it's useless to try to develop talent because if it doesn't succeed in the first week, it's declared a failure that should be replaced.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 29, 2013 -> 08:48 PM) That's for the FULL season. The 2009 season went into the tank from the time that Rios started playing like 2011/13 Dunn...and we all know Peavy's injury issues and the fact he wasn't ready to pitch when he was acquired. But there was still a lot of excitement early that summer about the team. I'm pretty sure that going into August, the attendance numbers were fairly similar, if not the 2009 pace ahead before all the wheels fell off that team. Fine, here goes. For 2008, through the trade deadline (54 home games), 29448 a game, 1531280 total. For 2009, 54 games again, 27054 per game, 1406809 total. The average from 2008 to 2009 decreased by 2672 tickets per game. It was down 2394 per game at that point.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 30, 2013 -> 09:34 AM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9323420/...-tampa-bay-rays Wow, this kid is quite a piece of work. Just finished a 50 game suspension for meth and amphetimenes, and now this You could have been really impressive and gone with making a new thread in PHT titled "Sale suspended after unruly behavior at a strip club".
  23. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ May 30, 2013 -> 08:52 AM) I guarantee you that if it were me, that guy wouldn't just be standing there watching, because I'd have a gun pulled on his dog. He'd be out of the house in a hurry getting his dog away. No offense...but if I were watching that happen, I'd be calling the police on you.
