QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:37 AM) But there is no proof of it. The proof seems to suggest more that Zimmerman was caught off guard by Martin. That was already discussed. I suppose it's who you want to believe at this point, but certainly not enough to convict Zimmerman. No, there will absolutely not be enough to convict Zimmerman. But the fact that there isn't something to convict him on is the best illustration of the problem with the law as it currently stands.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:33 AM) If Zimmerman was a racist, he probably wouldn't choose to live in a gated community with black people. It is possible? Yes. It is unlikely...I'm afraid so. I don't know many racists that choose to live -- next door -- to the race they hate. My point was that people are saying the only reason this kid was follow was because he's black. This is not logical when you consider the realities of that community. Other black people lived there. Zimmerman's neighbors are black. So my point remains: seeing a black kid wandering around probably isn't out of the ordinary. Come on man, you know darn well that there can be different levels of racism. "I hate all black people" versus "Black people in my neighborhood look particularly suspicious". Person might think the second one, everyone would still say they're a great neighborhood watch captain and great neighbor, and that doesn't make the latter any less of an expression of racism.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:31 AM) I knew I'd be called a racist at some point, but I'm cool with it. If you lived in a gated neighborhood and knew your neighbors, seeing a big teen walking around with a hooded sweatshirt that you'd never seen before, you're going to wonder what he is doing there. It really makes no difference that he was black, he simply wasn't a member of that community. And the appropriate response to that is to behave like a neighborhood watch person. Call the appropriate authorities and let them handle it. Instead, he was allowed to have a gun, deliberately decided that he was going to handle this one, and because of that a kid is dead.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:30 AM) Zimmerman had no legal right to apply deadly force. I'm just going to say that again here, I still think you're wrong, but we've been over this so I'm not going to rehash why.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:28 AM) I don't know what authority if any 911 operators have. They're typically just call center employees. But they give those instructions for a reason, because they don't want people taking "the law" into their own hands, where things like random shootings by untrained people on the street with no identity or authority will happen.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:26 AM) You lived in Chicago. I'm sure you're aware that every minority youth that is killed was an honor student or currently getting his life turned around. I really do hope you're trolling here to make a point, btw. If you are, it's somewhat effective, I'll grant you.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:27 AM) Also, "not known for misbehaving" must not include being suspended for drug possession Defying the orders of a 911 operator is ok though.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) The best part is that when Whitey (Hispanicky?) gets off, there will be no apologies or support for the poor guy. Everyone will just drop it and act like it never happened. Actually, this is probably totally untrue. This guy is going to get off and he's probably going to have a "Casey Anthony" level reputation for at least 10% of the country for the rest of his life.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 09:08 AM) Well, I'm a firm believer in being able to carry a concealed weapon. In this situation, it turned out well for the innocent neighborhood watch member when he was attacked by a punk kid who was suspended from school for possession. I believe the ability to carry a concealed weapon makes criminals think twice about robbing/attacking anyone they please. And if it leads to more violence, so be it. It's better than allowing them free rein, which they clearly have. I'm just going to hope you're being sarcastic.

Really hoping Stewart has a bad start. honestly. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 12:01 AM) Alcatraz: At least when terra Nova ended, you could look at that first season and say they told 1 complete story arc. Can't do that here.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 11:10 PM) That is something I seriously doubt. A person who is that entrenched in his neighborhood watch would almost certainly not act physically. He'd much more likely ask the kid questions to both get information/make him feel uncomfortable enough to leave the area. But at the same time, he also chose not to follow the rules of the "Neighborhood watch" program. The rules say don't follow, don't confront, just call the police. He did that, and then muttered something about how these guys always get away before hanging up the phone and deciding to defy those rules, knowing he was armed and figuring he'd give this one a good scare and that'd show all the other ones that they needed to stay out of his neighborhood. Pick your psychological explanation, you can plausibly back up both cases. Again, this is why having people roaming the streets with guns is the problem. Without that, he most likely doesn't follow a person he deems suspicious/threatening and he actually follows the rules and suggestions of the 911 operator.

I'm trying to figure out "How" his contract was restructured. Willingly or did the Tribe somehow get to force that?

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 08:52 AM) I assume you mean Sale, Peavy, & Humber? I get the first two, but you don't think the 163 IP last season should put Humber in better shape this year? I'll hope so, but I'm not counting chickens until they are hatched. If I wanted to be truly nasty I'd point out that Danks was hurt and struggled out of the gates last year and Floyd has a series of recurring conditions that keep costing him Septembers, and the bullpen has at least a good number of question marks in it too. And that's all before Viciedo has to catch a fly ball. I'm just not in a good place with this team right now.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 07:41 AM) Scoring runs is definitely my main concern too, but a productive Dunn changes the entire complexion of our offense and his spring has been very encouraging. Our pitching staff might well come out of the gates strong...but there are 3 of those guys who might start being gassed at about 100 innings.

Kinda sad that he's getting "Rewarded" for the crap he threw up there last year. How bout we earn this one?
-
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Mar 27, 2012 -> 07:41 AM) Quite ironic that no-one would touch him on a Max contract because of his knees other than the Knicks, and now his back is flaring up on him for the 2nd season in a row. Buyer beware indeed. It's not like those 2 parts wouldn't be linked.

2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread

No one is saying it but everyone is acting like tonight will have been Pat Summitt's last game. -
Well, how about that. Thatd be a crappy place for this series to end.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 08:28 PM) uh oh, just saw in interview with one Zimmerman's neighbors. The neighbor was black, by the way. He said that Zimmerman was not racist, and Zimmerman is Hispanic, not white. poor Obama media. the story has now completely fallen apart. Wtf? Seriously, you didn't bother to know any of those details before?
-
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 08:16 PM) I elaborated a bit on why...I'm just trying to think about the situation logically. It's all speculation, but I'm just trying to see how a guy, who was the supposed aggressor, who had a loaded gun, would allow this kid to get right up on him...as the aggressor, it'd be HIM trying to get up on the kid, not the other way around. Something just doesn't add up with this in a logical sense to me... a) If Martin had gotten away, and he supposedly did based on the 911 call that he "lost him" and was going back to his car...how did they end up in a scuffle? b) If Zimmerman was the aggressor, with a gun, how'd the kid get close enough to hit him/wrestle him to the ground? c) Witness says he saw Martin on top of Zimmerman, see B...how'd that happen to a gun toting aggressor? I just can't see it in my minds eye... Just like I came up with a bunch of scenarios earlier, you can come up with a dozen other scenarios. Kid could have been hiding and Zimmerman spotted him. Zimmerman could have threatened him with the gun and he jumped at him o prevent him from taking the shot. Same deal. Zimmerman was wounded, clearly there was a struggle, and if there was a struggle, then in any scenario you come up with, under that law, Zimmerman has the right to kill. The only way to avoid this mess is to have the law require him to retreat, and to get the guy with the concealed gun off the streets in the first place.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 08:12 PM) There's other witnesses and evidence. the whole thing has backfired on the Obama media Clearly there aren't other witnesses to the actual initiation of te conflict. So yea, youre taking the shooter at face value and it's impossible to prove you wrong because the other witness is dead.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 08:07 PM) Whys that? Because you always believe the testimony of the shooter since dead men tell no tales.
-
QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Mar 26, 2012 -> 07:00 PM) Trayvon Martin the aggressor, police sources say. Sounds like exactly what you'd read if you read testimony of 1 side of a 2 person conflict where the other is dead.
