  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 09:44 PM) Any chance that Tyler Kuhn will get a shot at the 2012 utility infield job? He hits for decent average but no power at all. The amount of effort they put into establishing firmly that they're not trying to move him upwards last year argues for no.
  2. QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 09:08 PM) 20-2 run to close out the quarter. Missed their last 9 shots
  3. For example, that was a terrible three by Rose.
  4. QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 07:55 PM) "Bud, what would you say about the mess our organization has been put in, having spent money on long term contracts for underachieving ball players? Is there a way to cleanse the organization of bad leadership (who canned the wrong man in Guillen), maintain payroll and still be a competitive team?" Ozzie. Guillen. Quit.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 06:35 PM) Carl Crawford was a 2nd round pick. That doesn't support your original argument that to be like Tampa you have to suck for 43737347823 straight and draft superstars each of those years. And clearly there's no benefit to picking at the top of the 2nd round compared to the middle of it.
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 06:09 PM) I would disagree that the farm system had nothing to do with it. 1. Trading c. Lee brought us Podsednik. 2. Trading Jeremy reed, Olivo and morse brought Garcia 3. a trade for Garland. 4. A trade for contreras 5. Cameron brought PK 6. Sox developed Janks as a closer (starter in LA system) The farm sytem was used effectively to acquire the pieces needed to win. It's another way to use the farm system products. It's just not the way you would prefer to use it. This is the way KW prerefers to use the farm system, use suspects to acquire proven MLB talent. I think that's why many of the "minor league" people and analysts don't like him. Out of that list, the contributions from the "Farm system" are pretty minimal. Loaiza wasn't a farm system product. Matt Karchner was a 30 year old journeyman we'd picked up from the Royals a few years earlier. Jenks spent 1/2 of a season in the Sox Farm System after the Angels tired of his act.
  7. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 05:27 PM) There really is no great D this year. The #1 D in the league just let itself get lit up by Tebow.
  8. If, for example, Castro and Molina have moved into solid rotation prospects in their first or second season by 2014, and Viciedo, Morel, and De Aza are contributing solidly, then the 2012 season was a huge success.
  9. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 04:33 PM) Can we give KW a pass for 2012? Can we afford too? My thought is we have no choice (obviosuly) and hopfelly he gets things under control and we compete. You pretty much have no choice but to do so. KW offered to either resign or take another job in the org last offseason. If the answer to that is "No", and you're also going to commit to pulling back on salary and restructuring your team, then you're committing to a process that really needs 3 years to evaluate. You can't evaluate how things have gone in 2012 until after 2014, when the Dunn and Rios contracts are clearing.
  10. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 04:25 PM) I wouldn't mind putting a Saints pic up but will never call the 49ers trash. But I thought the 49ers would have won that game last week even though drew brees put on a clinic? Show some cojones man!
  11. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 04:10 PM) I predict the 49ers and Giants will be the two top teams within 3 years. Yeah, because if there's one sport that is predictable...it's the NFL. You never get teams leapfrogging each other into the playoffs in that sport.
  12. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 03:40 PM) The Saints do have a great offense but if they were playing the 49ers last week, they would have lost. That is some impressive certainty. How many fewer points would they have scored, and how many more points would the 49ers have scored than Detroit?
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 03:20 PM) lol. Yeah, how many current Rangers were top 10 draft picks? Hamilton and? And he came via trade. How many of their current top prospects were #10 picks? Stop trying to pigeon hole the success of other organizations to make the White Sox look less inept. See, these 2 teams are very interesting comparisons, because these 2 teams have also had 1 other benefit the Sox haven't had. They've been able to grab a key piece because they haven't really been competitive, so they could afford to give playing time to Jose Bautista and Nelson Cruz, 2 very late-bloomers, when few other teams could. The Rangers also had a big advantage in drafting and then trading away Teixeira, who was a top of the draft pick himself. Those guys (Feliz, Andrus, Harrison) have been huge for them too.
  14. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 03:16 PM) It's not just a 3 player difference though, some guys in the Jays system ranked as their 25-30 best prospects are top 10, if not top 5 prospects for us. That is insanely bad. We've also been content to move guys to make compete-now trades, while the Blue Jays have made the exact opposite sort of moves. That plays into it big time also. Especially given that one of the trades the Sox made was a really bad one.
  15. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 03:17 PM) Over paying unproven prospects does help. many players slide in the draft because some organization refuse to pay high prices. If you continually do this you will eventually hit on a few. However, the new CBA has effectively ended that practice.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:53 PM) Yes and no. Yes for the obvious reason. But no, HW is well known to have steered almost entirely clear of W's decisions as a President. In fact the few times he did give advice, it was about NOT going into Iraq, which W did anyway. I hold the obvious reason against him.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) I tend to agree. Certain Presidents seem to look better or worse years after they left office. For me, both HW and Clinton have looked better over time... Reagan and W worse. HW begat W.
  18. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) I'd be patient for about 5 seasons, if that was the direction that Sox wanted to go. I am glad the Sox have brought in some new scouts this off season from the Jays and Twins organzation. I sure as all hedoublehockeysticks wouldn't be patient for 5 seasons. I'm already debating whether i want to spend the $200 on the MLB package this year, and I won't be making a trip to the Cell this year after having done so the last 2 years. Repeat me not caring for 5+ years and I really don't know whether I'd be able to get back excited for a playoff team. And I have 77,000 posts on a White Sox message board.
  19. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:36 PM) Last year Rays team did very well after losing Crawford, the whole bullpen and several other key pieces from the season before. That's the organzation I want KW to follow.. They're great at scouting and knowing when to let go of key players, such as Crawford, Soriano, and Pena to name a few. So you're prepared for 10+ years of last place finishes in order to stockpile top-3 draft picks?
  20. QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:31 PM) Two different markets.. Plus you said it yourself are fan base is bandwagon jumpers. Sooner or later this team needs to build for the future, for the better of this organzation. The first thing to understand about the chicago baseball market is that it really is not two different markets unless both teams decide to allow it to be so.
  21. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) You know they have operating surplus if needed. They are working to a budget and this frees up even more cash for this offseason and this year. It also fits with attempting to move salary at the trading deadline too (i.e. perhaps moving part of Peavy's contract away).
  22. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:16 PM) Can someone give me some of the great rebuilding projects in the history of baseball? I am still waiting on the Orioles wave of young pitching from a couple of years back. The 1997 Marlins. The post-tetrahydrogestrinone Giants. The Braves/Twins worst to first year. The Yankee dynasty.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:15 PM) You really think so? The fact that the Sox won a world series and really built up a solid attendance base despite some of the highest ticket prices in baseball, and the fact that the Sox are now consistently a top 10 payroll, pretty much says yeah
  24. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) I don't know how much you've worked out but do you now how hard it is to significantly hypertorphy those small wrist flexors and extensors? Actually, yes, I'm somewhat familiar with that, but let me also say that if my career was built in no small part on my ability to flick my wrists while flailing a piece of wood around my body, I'd put a hell of a lot more effort into it than I currently do.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 01:44 PM) What have all of those years of rebuilding gotten Oakland? Those prospects will fetch Billy Beane a nice haul in 3-4 years when he trades them away.
