QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 12:54 PM) He's been worth that kind of money over the last 3 seasons. That's a reasonable contract for him.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 12:34 PM) Obama is a role model to many, therefore when the President just prints up money to spend his followers assume it is OK for the to do the same. It's a very simple (and completely correct) theory that I have. Do right wingers actually think this is funny and not just embarrassing to the person writing it?

Payroll
Baseball Reference has a very good tool for this for every team. We're currently at $96 million committed. We also need 13 other people to fill out the roster at about $500k each if they're minimum salary guys, which is another $6 million or so. Finally, Peavy has a $4 million buyout at the end of the eyar. So you can count $106 million and be fairly honest in that number.

2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 12:32 PM) And what you are saying is probably correct. And therin lies the problem... this team runs the risk of another Dunn melt down, another non-performing year from Rios and another injured Peavy year all because of bad decisions involving huge amounts of money and we will be suffering through another non-winning year. The hope is they turn it around. The reason why the Sox won't eat that money is...it's already committed. They might well move him if they can move him without having to eat most of the Contract, but they're not eating the Contract. If you buy out his contract...you're buying him out completely. No matter what he does, you're still paying for him.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 12:07 PM) Bulls beat a Bynum-less Lakers team. If both are playing their best, the Bulls will not beat the Heat. We just got to hope that if/when we play the Heat, they don't play up to their potential. Did both teams play their best in the playoff series last year? because even though the HEat won in 5, that was at least a close series, and the Bulls still have plenty of room to improve from there.

Who is the #5 starter in 2013?
QUOTE (daggins @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) Molina - Should be better than #5 Stewart - Should end up a good pen arm Santiago - Real wild card, no idea what to expect here. Castro - Will either bomb out or be better than #5 Axelrod - Possible mop up guy, of the ones listed he is the most likely to be #5, especially if the trades continue. Where a guy projects to wind up doesn't necessarily reflect how they perform in their rookie season. John Danks, for example, was basically a #5 starter in 2007, at least in terms of performance. Several of those guys could be mid or upper rotation pieces long term but still get penciled in as the #5 starter in 13.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 11:59 AM) that's what i figured. but Ron Paul is still worse, right? cause Ron Paul is the ULTIMATE hater. Going through Ron Paul's writings, yeah, he puts Santorum to shame. It's really remarkable that a guy can maintain a career with the stuff in those writings without being completely ostracized.

2011-2012 NBA Season Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 11:50 AM) Yeah I knew Beasley was a black hole in the offense since he came into the NBA, I was curious if he had made any attempts to fix this, apparently not lol. Wasn't he more of a banger and inside presence in college? Or was that because the competition wasn't nearly the same and now he is facing grown men instead of redshirt and true freshmen? He was much more of an inside presence in college, but being undersized doesn't hurt you as much in college as it does when you get into the league.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 11:47 AM) is the Santorum thing something you guys just came up with? Seems like something Democrats would be really interested in. No, that one has been out there for nearly a decade. Dan Savage, sex columnist/homosexual, came up with that one as a humerous way of responding to Santorum's hate towards the gays, and it has stuck.

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) So you think they should pass on his talent because they made a mistake with Rios? They would be paying him with TCQ money not Rios money. No, but we ought to understand that the White Sox are not going to eat $40 million. They're just not going to do it.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 11:12 AM) IMO, the NFC team with the best chance to knock off the Pack are the Saints. They'll put up a ton of points on GB's defense, even in Lambeau. The last time they played outside, it was a 50-60 degree sunny day in Tennessee, and they only put up 22.

2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) I would expect Cespedes to play in the minor leagues in 2012. If he is on fire and the Sox have to make a spot for him in the lineup, then I think Rios would be the guy to go. Either he would be traded with the Sox giving cash because he is playing well and has value or he is outright released because he is not performing and would be a distraction on the bench. He could also move De Aza to the bench if Rios actually plays very well. I really would love for the Sox to sign Cespedes. Even if it doesn't work out, it is a ballsy move that could add a superstar the Sox for the rest of the decade. So, you think that the Sox are going to commit $30 million or so to signing Cespedes and then eat $40 million on Rios to open a slot for him?

Jason Frasor Traded to Jays
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) Did EJax strike you as someone that wanted to be in the limelight and under extreme media scrutiny? My impression from interviews and body language is that he is a pretty laid back dude. I could be wrong since I do not know the man personally. Maybe he feels Cooper can help him be more successful? Of course he would not play for the Sox for 9 million a year if the Yanks were offering 12. I'm just saying if it is close, he may choose to be be happy. First of all...he's a Scott Boras client. You're not a Scott Boras client unless getting a metric ****ton of money is important to you. Secondly, guys who are laid back sometimes are the ones who work best in NYC, because they can brush it all off.

Jason Frasor Traded to Jays
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 1, 2012 -> 09:43 PM) Yep, it's a good trade. It doesn't make the trade last year of acquiring Frasor any better, and it also means Stewart is likely in the bullpen to start the year. Obviously this bring up the question, what better deal was available for 2 months of Edwin Jackson?
