Carlos Quentin traded to Padres
QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 09:09 PM) I would have liked to see what an OF of Quentin, De Aza, and Viciedo could have done. I was all for picking up Rios at the time, but having that guy on the roster continues to drag the team down. If Rios and his lousy contract weren't on the roster we'd likely see the OF mentioned above and Quentin's salary wouldn't have been as big an issue. I can't remember ever hating a baseball player as much as I do Rios. Like it or not, Rios has to play next year. That's the only thing we can do.

Quit trying. That stadium is ours again.

Obviously...the problem is that you keep sending teams to Assembly Hall that are highly ranked.

2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
QUOTE (Boogua @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 08:14 PM) -- I'm admittedly biased. I'm a huge illini fan, so I hate IU basketball (I hate tOSU too and have watched a lot of their games). Congratulations on IUs two huge wins. I wish Weber could get us wins like that. I just honestly think the game was a bit fishy. A win is a win though. Congrats. Said it before, will say it now. We're not better than Ohio State. But it's been a long time since home court advantage and some lucky shooting was enough for IU to overcome a top seed. Now we've beaten 2 top 2 seeds in 3 weeks. And for those who want to complain about the refs, maybe it was iffy, but we still lost Zeller. So F*** it. A couple more wins and we're a tourney team again. Stop coming to Assembly if you're ranked in the top 2. It doesn't go well.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) 1.) At 26, if Cespedes gets between $30-$50M he will not see the minors. Frankly, I will be surprised if he gets that kind of money. Not astonished, but he seems like he belongs as a $15 million player. Too crazy of a risk more than that.

Yeah, so top ranked teams...should just stop coming to Assembly Hall. It just doesn't work well for them.

Zeller just got bumped hard with the body (on the shot that tied it at 55) and they didn't call it.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 07:35 PM) Well they called an off the ball foul on Buford to give him his fourth. Deshawn Thomas has 3 too. Not quite even yet. There's a little home court, but once zeller went to the bench it was starting to even out. This has been a pretty fairly called 2nd half, very tight on both sides. Wasn't really watching the refs in the first half because i was drinking.

I once saw an IU-OSU game in person that went just like this one, in terms of how the refs called the game. Bobby Knight kicked over a chair. We cheered.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 07:19 PM) Every time I look up there's another Adobe Reader update or Flash update. I actually stopped using Adobe Reader and use a different program to read PDFs. It's so bloated as well. Unfortunately, the pdf format is now so ingrained in the sciences it's going to be really hard to replace it, at least in my life. Most journals have spent 5+ years digitizing their archives, some of them going back 100+ years, and they've put them direclty into pdf format because everyone used it.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 07:04 PM) It looks like Indiana might have the best homecourt advantage in college basketball. They get lots of fortunate calls, but it is basketball I guess. It was what, 19-9 when they called that second foul on Sullinger? I think tOSU should be happy to be down 1. 11 turnovers, 0-6 from 3, and 4 players with 2 fouls, including one of the best players in college basketball. Well, now that Zeller has 3, can you call it closer to even?

Carlos Quentin traded to Padres
QUOTE (Cali @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 06:47 PM) I'll say this again when we get closer to the season, but BANK on Dayan having an awful April. It's been a theme for both him and Alexei. Cuban players that are too damn cold to hit the ball in April. So lay off him.... I fully expect him to heat up in the summer time. That being said, I'm excited to see the Tank in a full season. Viciedo had an injured hand last year.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 05:38 PM) I'm not very familiar with bWAR. Baseball Reference has their own version of WAR from fangraphs. I'd assume they weight different stats differently to come up with their numbers. In like 80% of the players they agree pretty well, but then occasionally there's a large divergence, and 2 WAR is a pretty big divergence in the case of Peavy.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) Doing some more number crunching, did anyone noticed Peavy put up a 2.9 WAR in only 18 starts? That's the same WAR that Danks put up. According to Fangraphs, market value for that 2.9 WAR is $13M. Peavy made $16M. I didn't realize how little Peavy actually hurt us last year. I was under the assumption he put up something like a 1.5 WAR in his half season. But really, his 2011 wasn't bad at all, and almost provided fair value. Extrapolate his numbers to a full 33-game season (yeah, yeah, I know, dangerous thinking), and that would have given him a 5.3 WAR, good for 12th best in baseball, right in front of Matt Cain. If it makes you feel better, in bWAR, he was only worth 1.2 bWAR last year and 1.4 bWAR the year before.

Carlos Quentin traded to Padres
QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 05:08 PM) Great post. The rebuilders IMO pretty much will accept any trade as long as it's dealing a name player who makes a bit of money for no names. I don't know why some people are so interested in saving Jerry money. Pay that parking fee; pay for your 10 dollar beers next season. What does a fan get when the Sox save payroll money? Discounts? Yeah right. They get to see more of Viciedo, who some of us have been dying to see more of for 2 years.

Carlos Quentin traded to Padres
QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 05:06 PM) Rios banged 13 home runs last year. His career norms do not suggest him hitting anywhere close to 25 bombs next season. I'd expect about 15 hrs if he has a bounceback year. Greg, you finally said something people should agree with. Rios is a doubles-power hitter who occasionally hits a HR, when he's going well. When he's not...well, he's the worst hitter in MLB.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 04:49 PM) Power dropoff from Quentin to Viciedo shouldn't be too drastic, but yea, this OF is rather weak power-wise. 2 of the 3 OF positions, going around all of baseball, had average OPS values of ~.725 last year. RF was the only one higher, at about .775. I think you guys are imaginging steroid-era outfields for comparison.
