Danks and Floyd drawing interest
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 02:39 PM) A Pirate blogger suggested switch-hitting OF'er Robbie Grossman and RHP Kyle McPherson for Floyd. Grossman's intriguing, McPherson not so much. I'm not adverse to getting a position prospect back in a trade depending on the pitching they get back from the rest of the players they deal. 21 year old, repeating high A ball, .870 OPS, 13 HR, 24/34 SB's, 104 walks last year. .294 average but .418 OPS. Striekouts are high, 111 last year, 118 the year before (616 PA's last year), but that kid knows how to take a walk. Definitely an intriguing option if he's available. McPherson, 23 year old, AA baller, 2.96 ERA last year, very low WHIP, looks like he doesn't walk anyone. I'd do that.

What's Plan B?
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 01:56 PM) That actually might be more appealing than going into '12 with our lone hope being that Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and Gordon Beckham remember how to play baseball. Oh, and Jake Peavy being able to pitch one month without his vagina hurting. Man, I want this team to take the division so much right now so that I can dredge this up. Just having to read that makes me like the guys more.

Nationals C Wilson Ramos kidnapped in Venezuela
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 01:03 PM) I didn't say Niagara was the tallest. I said Angel Falls is the tallest, and after looking it up, it is. And upon looking up pictures of Angel Falls, it is nowhere near the width or volume of Niagara. So, I don't even know why you posted anything. Because although Niagra is "Wider" than Angel falls, Niagra's volume/area don't compare to others around the world.

Nationals C Wilson Ramos kidnapped in Venezuela
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) Oh, and I think Angels Falls is the tallest waterfall in the world. I'm not sure it compares to the massive area of Niagara. Niagra isn't even the largest by volume in the U.S., and it's no where near the tallest.

What's Plan B?
QUOTE (lord chas @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 12:36 PM) What draft picks would we get if MB walks? Right now we're not 100% sure because that could change upon MLB signing a new CBA. If the rules continue where they were, we would receive 1 sandwich-round pick, and that is all.

What's Plan B?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 12:05 PM) Absolutely. Because Viciedo's trade value is higher. So, you've been confusingly concerned about teh 2013 starting rotation and to solve that problem, you're going to trade Viciedo, leaving the 2013 roster with Rios and De Aza as the starting OF's. You don't see the issue there?
-
What's Plan B?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 11:57 AM) That's ok. Viciedo has questions too. So we'll keep the expensive one who become a free agent next year and get rid of the inexpensive one.

What's Plan B?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) Quentin could have a better year than Viciedo in 2012 so not having Viciedo next year might not be a loss. As far as 2013 goes they'd have money to spend to upgrade the offense. And Quentin will get hurt next year, so having no backup OF is going to leave us with a Rios/De Aza/Danks2 OF for at least part of the year.

Couple thousand people/students, including former player Lavar Arrington, held a candlelight vigil in support of the actual victims of Mr. Sandusky last night.

What's Plan B?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 11:27 AM) You have to give something to get something. Viciedo would be able to net a better return than Quentin. Hopefully they find a couple starters in those trades to go along with Buehrle and Sale. With the payroll in 2013 $75M they'd have plenty of resources to find an impact bat and fill a few other needs. While this is likely true, it's also worth noting that any return for either of them will not contribute this year, while Viciedo should do so. Your plan takes the team from, in your opinion, having little pitching for 2013, to having effectively zero offensive threats in 2013.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 12, 2011 -> 10:37 AM) Deal Danks, Floyd, Thornton, Viciedo focusing on pitching prospects in return. Beckham added to this list with Lillibridge taking over at 2nd? Viciedo and Beckham both dealt for scraps, Lillibridge taking over as a full time starter? yeesh.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:52 PM) Which is insane, considering PSU's endowment fund is in the 10 figure area ($1.5 billion). That's really not a huge amount of money, most of it is usually tied up in specific funds or goals.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:49 PM) The problem with this theory is that it assumes Sandusky was some super-amazing asset to the program. Yes, he was a good football coach. Yes, he probably recruited well. But are you really going to risk having a child molester on campus for his recruiting skills? If that was the case, they would have just kept him on the coaching staff. What's the difference between having him on the coaching staff still and allowing him access to all facilities and having him officially recruit on your behalf? I'm not buying it. Something else was at work here. I mean, he can't exactly force the team to let him recruit on behalf of the team, the only reason why they'd do that is if they thought he'd be an asset in the process.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:43 PM) Credit rating agency. Basically they evaluate the level of trust-worthiness of companies, institutions, governments etc. that issue bonds. It's a sign that they're seeing $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ liabilities lining up. And that this could potentially have a negative impact on an important revenue stream (Football!) as well.

Penn State horror story
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:31 PM) This isnt a perennial national championship contending program. I think covering this up in the name of the program is just a stupid reason to cover it up. The people who know about this situation had to have calculated the risk of the coverup being blown open and determined that the fallout would be greater than exposing Sandusky when the rumor(1998) became fact(2002). I agree that someone much more powerful here was dictating the moves, and it was because his own reputation and life was at stake It may be a "Stupid reason to cover it up" to our eyes, but remember, these programs are huge money-makers and that has only gotten more true over the past decade. Covering it up = keeping the money train rolling.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:27 PM) Ugh I don't blame some of the people for this one. I mean, if you spent 4 years with the guy, actually considered him a friend and mentor, considered him a big help to your career, then you read those allegations, a reasonable reaction is denial.

Penn State horror story
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:22 PM) My only feeling is that some how the pimping kids rumor has some merit, and one of those people was either very powerful in PSU, a big time donor, or someone really powerful in the state. Basically Sandusky at that point would threaten to expose the other person. That is the only logical answer, that someone way more powerful than Sandusky was involved. It doesn't have to be logical, but "Keeping the football program winning games" is one other way you can make it work. They covered it up to protect the program. They ignored it because he could help them recruit to win games. They got McQueary to shut up to protect the program. They turned a blind eye when he kept bringing kids along to protect the program.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 06:19 PM) Exactly, I dont condone spending 12.5 million a year on a closer. If we spent that money this board would be going apes***. And Hell, they just spent $23.5 mil a year on 2 of them, right?

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 05:58 PM) Papelbon was brilliant towards the end of the season. Boston is probably kicking itself in the ass for letting him go if that is all it took to retain him. At least they have Bobby Jenks for the bargain of $6 million to ease their pain next year. Daniel Bard will get that job and Boston will go spend $12 million a year on a starter.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 05:29 PM) Yeah, the owners aren't going to cave again here. If the players say no, it's almost assuredly decertification/armageddon time. The question is whether the players believe that. I don't think they do.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (sox win @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 05:14 PM) obviously you'll aren't fans of ellsbury, but there is no other player in the league that can do what he can do(gold glove, 321 avg 32 hr 39 sb) The Red Sox made a mistake of signing Crawford and it's going to cost them Ellsbury, if he came to Chicage he would be the face of the franchise and someone to build around. But as you noted, he's 2 years away from FA, right? If he hits like this MVP candidate for another 2 seasons, then yes, that'd be great, but then he'd get a 7/$175 contract from someone. That wouldn't be "Building around" him, that'd be "trying to make an all-in run this year" again. It's not that I'm not a fan of his abilities when healthy and motivated, it's that I don't think he's a good match for this club.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
QUOTE (sox win @ Nov 11, 2011 -> 05:00 PM) If I remember correctly, 2010 Ellsbury collided with Beltre and broke some ribs, which cost him the entire year. And Quentin's 2008 injury was caused by punching a bat, and Quentin's 2011 injury was caused by a freaky landing with the ground.
