2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) Are you sure? This doesn't make any sense to me. The NBA is still an entity with it's own rules and contracts. I'm guessing that when a player is drafted/signed there are two contracts/agreements signed - one between the player and the franchise, the other between the franchise and the NBA. No, I'm not sure, but the thing that doesn't make any sense to me is why decertifying would give the owners the right to void all remaining player contracts, yet that is exactly what Stern said, quite clearly, would happen. If the league has the power to void every existing player contract upon decertification, then everything from that point is now a matter for negotiation.

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 03:15 PM) So here's a question. If all contracts are voided, what does that mean if/when the league comes back? Will teams still hold restrictions on players who were under contract previously? If this step happens, the answer will be "That is an issue for either the courts to decide or for the players and owners to collectively bargain in the future." It's basically totally up in the air. If both sides could agree to it, they could have everyone start off as a free agent & just let the league sort itself out anew. Not extremely likely, but there is no restriction left on anything if preexisting contracts are voided, unless the courts step in. You have to think that there are owners who are drooling over the idea of getting out from under some of these contracts, and they will take full advantage of it.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) @DarnellMayberry Darnell Mayberry Lots of players were smiling and joking just before the start of the news conference. Kobe Bryant looked pissed. His contract pays him $25.244 million this year, $27.849 next year, and $30.453 the year after. IF Stern isn't kidding and they're going to respond by voiding all contracts in some fashion, and rewritten contracts will have to follow new CBA rules, this might well cost Kobe $40 million +.

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 03:00 PM) I'd imagine. I'm just pissed off that it actually has gotten to the point where the season is unlikely, even though much of the speculation as far back as last season warned about just that. If they lose the whole season, the players will be out ~$1.85 billion total.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) ArashMarkazi Arash Markazi Again, regular season would start 30 days after a deal is made. I assume drop-dead date for a 50-game season would be around Jan. 6. Have you seen any estimate of the legal schedule? In the NFL Version, the Union decertified on March 11th, and the first arguments were heard on April 6th. A similar schedule here would put the first hearing happening right around Christmastime, and there's a few extra holidays stuck in there which will slow things down. The big decision that finally pushed a deal to happen took about 4 months.

The Post actually gave front page space to an article questioning the notion that regulations, particularly from the EPA, are major "Job-killers."

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 02:43 PM) Good job, clowns. I don't care about hockey and football happens once a week. I hope whatever proposal you end up agreeing to is s*** compared to the one you just turned down. Even if they pull off the exact same deal as the one they just turned down, they'll be out a billion dollars in earnings for the first 1/2 of this season.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 02:01 PM) I have no idea if that's a lot or a little. After checking, it seems generally agreed that is "A lot". Maybe more than has ever been set aside by the Court for a single case.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 02:35 PM) Since it went so well for Al Gore... He also, while working for the DOJ, beat Microsoft on an anti-trust case, he's on the team of attorneys for Jamie McCourt, and he worked with former solicitor general Olsen on a case which so far has beaten back California's Prop 8.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
2 national polls are out today showing the predicted Gingrich surge, coupled with a little bit of fading by Herman Cain. CNN has it Mittens 24-Newt22, PPP has Newt in the lead and Mittens back at 3rd (although that poll has shown him lower than some of the other national polls).

Can anyone honestly tell me why the NBA players believe that decertification will be a successful tactic for them when it was not a successful tactic for the NFL Players union and failed to achieve the court victory they needed in that case?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) The players are just getting terrible advice. They are not going to get a better deal than the one they've been offered. I totally agree. They could probably have gotten some slight improvements around the edge...but that was effectively the deal that everyone thought the owners would eventually put on the table back in July when this thing started.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) You can argue 3% vs 4% inflation currently, what's in the basket, include or exclude energy and food commodities, whatever. The point is, real inflation including energy is something like 4%, without it maybe its 3%... while we are still nowhere near fast recovery mode. So, with that level of inflation now, and all the money in the system, what do you think will happen when the economy does start to pick up steam? The Federal Reserve will take advantage of the enormous room it has to fight inflation, by slowly raising rates and selling off some of the trillions of dollars worth of assets it has accumulated. More than likely, the Fed will actually be too cautious about inflation because of the sheer number of inflation hawks on the Fed, and will keep the inflation rate low enough by dragging out the unemployment crisis for a longer time. Meanwhile, Ben Bernanke will hold the largest party in the history of mankind to celebrate the fact that the fed has gone from begging congress to do something about jobs to actually doing what it is really good at.

Financial News
It's the NY Post, so either assume it's all obtained by hacking people's phones/has the credibility of Fox, but it sure sounds like JPM is working hard to make sure other people take the losses on MF, and they were the place where the supposedly lost money was "Found" adn then declared to not be the missing money.

Danks and Floyd drawing interest
QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 14, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) All the blogs on the Rockies list Danks at the the top of their wish list. I wonder which GM will start the ball rolling....Rockies need a solid SP to be ready to win in 2012. Of course, they also need a third baseman, a second baseman, a first baseman under 35.. Still, they have a lot to offer in a trade. I've got to imagine that they don't want to block the guys they swiped from Cleveland, so having D1 on a 1 year deal wouldn't be terrible for them.
