U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 10:06 AM) That's what the NTC minister who said he would not be turned over to us said. But I'm not convinced. After all, he was supposed to have died back in 2009. That was the stupid logic behind releasing him in the first place and it turned out to be a lie. Yet here he is, still breathing, and only a few months ago he was spotted at a Gaddafi rally. And even if he is comatose, so what? 270 innocent people were murdered twenty years ago. I hope brain cancer hurts like Hell for that turd. It still won't be as bad as what he gave his victims. I don't see why we give compassionate release to anyone, much less to mass murdering terrorists. There's no reason al-Megrahi should not die in a dank, Western prison cell. None whatsoever. This wasn't just a statement by some minister, CNN actually located the guy in late August. There's video of him lying unconscious in a hospital bed supported by breathing machines.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 10:55 AM) Buehrle probably wants to go to the NL. His career would be extended if he went to Florida. Mark Buehrle so far in his public comments has shown absolutely no interest in "extending his career by making things easier." Dude's been talking about retiring for 5 years.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) Matt Ryan's looked a lot worse...but this is Stafford we're talking about. Talking about ankle and knee injuries for him on it. Might be a while. MRI is scheduled for today on Stafford. Also...there's talk that Suh was somehow taunting Matt Ryan after he went down to the ground with that rolled ankle.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 09:17 AM) Ya, that's actually a very interesting deal if you include Matty because you shed some salary as well. That being said, I agree with you, if we're going to deal both Danks and Thornton then you need to get back more than one piece. I'm not worried about shedding the salary...because I think Quentin should be moved regardless of the return as well (just to clear playing time in the OF, if for no other reason) and that puts the team at $100 million once he and D1 are moved. $110 million is enough to keep both Matty and re-up with Buehrle, which gives us the best chance to win next year. Moving Matty makes it harder to win next year...unless we get some sort of decent return for him.- U.S. launches airstrikes on Libya
QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 12:46 AM) However, one thing that could absolutely appease from the NTC which is poised to take over the country is if they turn Abdel Basset al-Megrahi (the convicted Lockerbie bomber) over to American forces. Isn't he lying comatose in a hospital?- 2011 World Series Thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 09:09 AM) Touche, I misread that a tad. I'd do Danks for Holland straight up as well. It's the 2nd piece that makes me want something else back...I still think Matty is a very valuable commodity.- 2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 08:37 AM) I wonder how many of them actually need the money? Wasn't a substantial chunk of this revenue supposed to go to charity?- Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 08:55 AM) No pride, season is over, Peyton would have kept the defense off the field at least. Everyone in the world knew that Manning was one of if not the most valuable player in football but yeesh... That defense was built to have Peyton Manning on the roster. When the other team knows the Colts are going to score 28+ points, they have to take chances to try to keep up with them, and that creates opportunities for the Colts defense to generate big plays. When the other team only has to worry about the Colts putting up 14 a game, they can win the game with 2-3 scoring possessions and don't have to take risks. They can go for whatever play works best...they don't have to worry about putting 3 on the board and then having Manning come back and put 7 up 2 minutes later.- Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 10:46 PM) Thank god the Colts are not in primetime anymore this year..............NBC will flex them out later in the year! Wonder how much money they've lost for the league already this year. I know I flipped on for :20 last night to check the score and that was it.- 2011 World Series Thread
That wasn't the question though, it was Danks + Matty.- farm system rankings, AL Central

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 11:16 PM) Get the crystal ball out. Can Flowers be a jr. Napoli perhaps? Well, Napoli has been very good but has never played a full season, so that's a down notch on him. The closest he came, he struck out 137 times in 453 at bats last year, hitting .238 on the full season, .784 OPS. Flowers certainly has the ability to put up those sort of numbers...hell, he could actually outdo that on the power numbers based on what I saw...but the key is making contact. A full year, he might blow past that number of strikeouts, and that could leave him as a .190 hitter, which would be unacceptable even with his power.- "Major League Ready Talent" Only
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 11:10 PM) Well, it has worked relatively well for almost 20 years in Kansas City. After Glass/Wal-Mart mentality took over the team, they've made tidy profits because of the revenue-sharing but never have spent the type of dollars that Ewing Kauffman did to field one of the best teams in baseball (from roughly 1976 until the the strike). "Spending the type of dollars it takes to put together a winning team" in the 70's and 80's is a different beast from doing so now that collusion has been blocked.- 2011 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:35 AM) Without the revenues he can generate from a new stadium (see Emmanuel, Rahm)? Huh?- 2011 World Series Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 08:59 AM) I'd do that deal. I'd really like a minor league piece in addition to Holland.- 2011 World Series Thread

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 09:34 PM) What is their worth then? That is their worth. Which is why trades of guys like that are very rare. Very few teams can even meet that price, and fewer are willing to give it up.- The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 08:45 PM) Your reality is a little bit jaded. If there were as many exemptions as you think there are, then all these "evil corporations" wouldn't offshore, now would they? You can't have it both ways. Yes they would...if they believed that by moving stuff offshore they could convince naive legislators and conservatives to support even lower tax rates. Like, for example, they might convince GWB to support a 1 time "onshoring funds tax holiday". Then following that up by massively increasing the amount of money kept overseas, so that 5 years later you could come back and insist on another "1 time onshoring tax holidary".- 2011 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 08:40 PM) 2 World Series titles. His teams won 95,98,95,86,96,95,95,89,90 games. You're right, he's a trainwreck. The Cubs f***ed up again. Oh, I see, so someone else's players won 95 games his first year.- 2011 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 08:37 PM) He' won 2 WS. The Cubs payroll is not going to be an issue. And as I pointed out after you listed all his mistakes, his teams for the most part still won, so how does that happen? His coming on board probably just guaranteed the Cubs more revenue in 2012. And it also guaranteed them an extra $5 million in costs just to pay his and Hoyer's salaries.- 2011 Cubs Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 08:25 PM) You're talking about his biggest advantage, the money, without thinking about it. He still will have the highest payroll in his division, something he has NEVER had before, I think you have totally forgotten about the Yankees, and also if all his high priced signings were busts, he other moves must be golden. He never used the excuse drafting late was a good reason to have a s***ty farm system. But there's no obvious reason why that team must have the highest payroll in that division...they can sell the average seats in their ballpark at a high price, but compared to St. Louis or Houston...they have a 2nd team to compete with, and they have no advantage like luxury boxes or a modern stadium. At best, he goes from a case where he's the #2 spending team in the league to a case where he's the #3 spending team in the league, except with a 35% lower total salary and very little room for revenue expansion, along with the likelihood of revenue contraction having happened this year. $150-175 million buys you a lot more mistakes than $100-$120 million. - 2011 World Series Thread
