  1. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:26 PM) And they are offering bigger benefits which become part of your estate, not lost like in SS. But they're again able to do so because they set the program up at a time when the feds were paying 13% interest rates and banks were charging 15% rates on mortages. If you went to a financial institution and offered them a plan that included a guaranteed 5% annual interest return...that would have looked like a great deal for the financial institution at the time. Now, banks are offering 1% interest rates and Treasuries are returning negative interest rates. A similar deal would, right now, be going to a bank and offering a -10% interest return. No one would want Galveston's program if it lost 10% of its value any year that the economy turned down. The deal works because they took out the right deal at the peak of interest rates. Even the fact that they're paying a lot more in management fees doesn't matter.
  2. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:20 PM) And how will the government offer bigger returns? More subscribers? If Galveston created the same setup right now and interest rates moved back to averaging 6-7% long term, then OASDI would offer a significantly higher return than a Galveson-like program. OASDI also has much, much, much lower overhead costs than any private program.
  3. Those were some fast X-ray results.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) is vick already out of the game? Ok, now Vick is out. in for x-rays on his right hand.
  5. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) Unless he has a big market club for him to spend because he can't draft or develop players.. So all small market teams are out. Yeah, when he took over the team, they went from the #16 overall payroll in 2001 to the #22 overall payroll in 2003 and had a shot at the division every year. Won the world series with the #13 payroll. Clearly he needs a big market club for success.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:05 PM) Then go back and read the part where I said if Kenny could fire the manager If the Chairman extended Ozzie's contract and KW wanted him removed then KW should have resigned.
  7. The Pats will finish this off, but the Bills are only down 4 in the 2nd half. And yeah, they're going to blow th rough that Vegas line.
  8. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) Who is THEY? The Chicago White Sox front office.
  9. Very much so
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:00 PM) Wouldn't it be a tie if the Yankees beat the Red Sox twice and the Rays win? Ellsbury now has 30 homers, 38 steals and 100 RBI's. Quite a season. Clearly the best leadoff hitter in baseball (along with Jose Reyes) and Top 3 in the AL MVP race. Check Ellsbury's caught-stealings. He's got 38 steals at a rate that's nearly Pierre bad. And yes, it would be a tie if the Sox lost both today and th e Rays won 1.
  11. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:55 PM) You know if I was Kenny.. and couldn't fire my Manager.. I would quit... But, since ZERO teams want him.. I can see why he sticks it out, unemployment in this economy isn't a great thing. How do you judge that zero teams want him? General Manager openings aren't broadcast for nearly as long as managerial ones are. The only place clearly hiring for a GM is the Cubs.
  12. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) Sure. In September 2007 they picked up Ozzie's 2011 contract option. They committed to pay him for 4 more years at the end of 2007. And I'm going to believe that the White Sox were going to fire him and pay him 3 more years' salary at the end of 2008 even if the team went 30-132? This isn't an opinion there Tex. They picked up his option in the dregs of 2007. He was under contract for 4 seasons. You can't even pretend you have a case here. The earliest they'd ever have fired him was 2010, where they would have only had to pay him for 1 season. Instead they added 1 more year to his contract.
  13. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) So another... Its Ozzie's fault, that Kenny sucks thread.. got it. I think this would have been a great year for Kenny to turn over a clubhouse table again.
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:43 PM) You questioned why I thought Kenny would have fired Ozzie in 2008, then post this? At that point, he'd have been 2 years off of a 90 win team. Even sticking Jerry Owens out there, he wasn't getting fired.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:21 PM) yeah but he has actual NFL WR's running routes for him. At least before 3 of them got hurt, so do the Bears.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) He was last winter http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/...pitching-coach/ And when he was fired http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3060643 If he's the reason guys shave 0.62 off their ERA its puzzling he's still looking for work. I think the study may be a little off. If Ozzie's replacement wanted to bring in Mazzone as Cooper's replacement...I'd have zero complaints.
  17. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:33 PM) If anything, 2008 just shows how good Ozzie is. Despite Kenny. Which is why Jerry Owens opened the season as the starting LF and Carlos Quentin opened it on the bench. Because of how good Ozzie is. Owens getting hurt might well have bought Ozzie 2 more years of employment, because if Ozzie didn't have to play Quentin when he did, his team would have missed the playoffs that year too.
  18. I think Rogers would make a huge difference for the O-Line in terms of getting rid of the ball faster. We literally saw that in 2009 when the Packers O-Line was a black hole.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:01 PM) As I said if you really want to be known as a great pitching coach, you are going to need great pitchers. Mazzone was as highly thought of as any coach in baseball. Now he can't find a job. BTW, it didn't hurt the Orioles offered him a big bump in salary. Is he actually looking for a job as a pitching coach?
  20. Quit putting them in the super bowl until they win a playoff game.
  21. Obviously playing better than Philadelphia.
  22. This thing again? Tex, here's a direct quote from your WSJ piece. I've highlighted a key detail. If a very large fund went to a bank today and tried to set up a retirement plan that guaranteed a 4-5% return every year, do you think you could get it? You know why Galveston was able to do that? Look at the date. 1980. What were interest rates like in 1980? The fund is able to lock in high interest rates because interest rates were through the roof and the place they were putting the money was betting against additional inflation. No private scheme would give you a deal like that today, 10 year interest rates are basically negative when adjusted for inflation.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) is vick already out of the game? No but he hasn't been incredibly effective.
  24. Keep it off.
