QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) Yeah, you are correct. They just got lucky the past 30 years. If Galveston took out that policy and interest rates remained at 15%, they'd have taken enormous long-term losses. They'd probably have done like Chile and dumped their private account system in favor of the public one.

Not a good start for the Bears it would appear.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:25 PM) You said a Galveston type system, based on market returns on the deposited money can't match SS. You're right...a Galveston type system cannot do so...because the Galveston-type system *only* guarantees positive returns if you get the guaranteed interest return. A Galveston type system set up either with the full country in 1980 or set up anywhere right now would not be able to guarantee that the accounts would not decline in the event of a major market downturn. Galveston's accounts guarantee a several percent return in the event of a 2008 collapse. The only reason why that happens is that the program was set up when interest rates were at 15%, so it still seemed cheap. A Galveston type system, a Bush style private account system, whatever...you cannot set it up without allowing the possibility of investmentlosses. You know that. Galveston placed effectively a large bet that interest rates would decline fromm 1980 levels. They've been proven right on that.

Be honest with me just for a second Tex, I know it can be hard sometime. Let's imagine that the U.S. flipped to private accounts for retirement, somehow. Ignore the $20 trillion it would add to the deficit to do so. Then, 2008-2009 happens. The entire retirement system of the United States gets cut in half. Do you honestly think that the U.S. government would stand by and not be forced to add in extra money to make up for the losses of the people about to retire?

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) Yeah, I didn't anticipate that the Bills would do retarded things like running into the pile instead of simply stepping back and down. Stepping back and down would actually have left 0:15 or so on the clock. The penalties made it work out that the rest of the clock was burnt. Remember, you're talking to a person who thought that the Bills had the Titans beat with just a kickoff to go in the 1999 playoffs.

QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) So the government must guarantee a return greater than the market can achieve. The government can't invest your money to reach that goal, all they can do is toss greater and greater expense at it. And some people actually have a problem with that system? No...the government does not guarantee a return greater than the market "can" achieve. No one said that. And there is no tossing greater and greater expense at it. You can't possibly understand as little about OASDI as you're pretending to.

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:18 PM) Really? I think this is brilliant. I thought it was a huge advantage that the touchdown was overturned. And now with that stupid move from NE, the Bills have a first down and can run this thing down to the final seconds. Fitzpatrick nearly fumbled the ball and the Bills just had a penalty on their O-Line. Stopping the clock.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:16 PM) Ok now Morel, we are in the bottom of the 8th trailing 2-0. You are the leadoff batter with a 3-1 count. Try and get on base maybe with a walk? But no we swing away and ground out. I think what we need is base runners and here a walk is as good as a hit Did he swing at a pitch out of the strike zone? He's been our best hitter this month. A hit is as good as a walk.

QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 04:05 PM) So saving for retirement by investing will not work. If there was not a government program for retirement returning greater than market rates, no one could achieve social security type results? Social Security type results...aka 0 risk of loss in the event of a downturn? No, no one could do that.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) And you can't mention '03 without mentioning the injury. Healthy PK produces. Even if you want to give Walker some credit, it's nowhere near the level of credit Cooper deserves for turning Loaiza, Contreras, Thornton and Floyd around. Loaiza fell completely apart in 2004, conveniently at the same time that public testing started though.- Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:46 PM) Konerko was no scrub from '99 through '02 (no Walker) - .294/.356/.499/.855 OPS during that stretch. It's not even close. Note that you excluded his 2003 pre-walker slump.- Sox best hitter endorses Walker
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:43 PM) Gave up on Contreras AND El Duque. KW > Cashman Just kidding. But we'll never really know unless they traded positions for 5-7 years and Cashman had to rebuild the Sox with a $90-105 million payroll and no budget for the draft nor the ability to sign players from the Asian market, Central America, Venezuela or the Dominican. Technically, at those times...the White Sox's payroll was $55-$75 million.- Sox best hitter endorses Walker
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:40 PM) That accomplishment >>>>>>>>> anything positive Walker has done. Well, maybe taking Konerko from a guy struggling to get over injury to one of the most reliable bats in the league is pretty close...- Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread
